Principal’s Message Issue 2.17 9 February 2017 Quality Education in a Stimulating Environment Dear Parents and Carers Meet the Teacher Thankyou to the many parents who attended the Stage 1 Meet the Teacher evening on Monday. Lots of infor- mation was shared and questions asked and answered. It's a great first step to getting to know your child's class teacher for the year. Early Stage 1 (Kindergarten) will hold their evening on Tuesday 14 February 5.00pm-6.30pm; Stage 2 on Monday 13 February 5.00-6.00pm and Stage 3 (including 4/5R) on Monday 20 February 5.00-6.00pm, with the exception of 5H who will start at 5.30pm. Swimming Carnival I am looking forward to my first Engadine West PS swimming carnival next Tuesday. Thanks to Mrs Payne and Mrs Weppler for their organisation of the event to date. There are really only a few dates on the school calendar when we do not want rain and this is one of them. Interesting how over the last few extremely hot days, all we wanted was some rain to cool us down! School Uniform I spoke on Monday morning about the importance, and being proud of, wearing the Engadine West PS uniform. Every time they put on the uniform and wear it at school or in the community they represent the values of our school, their families and themselves. It is important to get the uniform right - from the hat to shoes and socks. The full school uniform is available in the school's uniform shop. The next uniform shop opening time will be on Wednesday 15 February from 9.15-10.15am then every second Wednesday. Staff Professional Learning On Monday Mrs Payne attended a day for school computer coordinators. This is a big job in a school the size of Engadine West. On these days, Mrs Payne is updated on school based technology tips and tricks, how to troubleshoot issues and how to support teachers. Staff News From time to time teachers who have had long serving careers with the Department of Education are able to take long service leave. Mrs Leavai will be taking leave from Friday 10 February to Friday 24 February inclusive. Her programs will continue under the expert guidance of Mrs Teasel who has relieved in the position previously. Deputy Principal’s Report

Years 3-6 Friday Sport

Students will be trialling for winter soccer, oz tag and netball PSSA teams on Friday 10 and 17 February, weather permitting. If they are absent on these days or attend the Friday swimming program, they will trial at another time. Students may choose to participate in girls soccer and AFL Term 1 for six weeks commencing Friday 24 Feb-ruary. These are PSSA skills development programs being held at Heathcote Oval and Ridge Fields. Students will travel by bus to the venues. They don’t need to be experienced in the codes and should be encouraged to have a go. Permission notes will be sent home soon. There will be more detailed information on the permission notes. Please return them promptly as places are limited and travel and supervision arrangements need to be finalised. An Engadine Zone PSSA facebook page has been developed to inform the community if Engadine PSSA sport has been cancelled due to weather conditions. Like https://www.facebook.com/Engadine-Zone-PSSA-758281830991553/ to receive push alerts. Ross Edwards Deputy Principal

Meet the Teacher Evenings

Early Stage 1 (Kindergarten) Tuesday 14 February 5.00-6.30pm

Stage 2 (Years 3 & 4) Monday 13 February 5.00-6.00pm

Stage 3 (Years 5 & 6 including 4/5R) Monday 20 February 5.00-6.00pm (5H at 5.30pm)

Do you have problems with getting your child to school, for some of the following reasons?

won’t get out of bed won’t go to bed can’t find their clothes, books, homework, school bag…… school lunches not ready dawdles over breakfast homework not done watching television late at night or when they should be getting ready for school mum planning a day out test/presentation at school child or sibling birthday child screams and won’t let you go

Here are some suggestions which are based on ‘setting regular routines’

have a set time to be out of bed have a set time to go to bed have uniform and school bag ready the night before make lunches the night before have a set time to starting/ending breakfast. A routine is important. set time for daily homework activities turn the television on for a set time and only if appropriate be firm, children must go to school provide lots of positive encouragement be firm, a birthday is not a holiday time arrival at school to coincide with bell time and leave quickly. If arranged with the teacher beforehand,

please place your child’s hand into that of a teacher and then leave.
