Raymer Elementary SCHOOL NEWSLETTER

December 2016

Best Wishes for a Happy Holiday!

It is incredible that we have already finished our first term and are ready for

our Winter break. The students have worked hard these first few months

and we are proud of all of them. We would like to thank you, the parent

group, for sponsoring Raymer’s first We Day for the grade 6 students. The

students appreciated all of the tasty meals and snacks. The teacher spon-

sors were surprised how positive the comments were from the students.

Some feedback from the students to improve the experience next year is

to have more speakers and more team building activities. It is wonderful to

see so many intermediate students get involved with the leadership oppor-

tunities: announcement leaders, camera leaders, play pals, AV leaders,

peace leaders, lunch monitor leaders, and equipment leaders. From the

classes performing in the Christmas concerts, to our Salvation Army Food

Hamper Drive, I am so proud that Raymer students share their gifts to

make the whole community a better place.

We hope everyone can find some time during this holiday to enjoy friends

and family and create new memories.

Sincerely,

Terrilynn Nunes

Raymer Christmas

Concert Thursday, December 15, 2016

Performances at 12:15 pm and 6:30 pm

We have a wonderful program of Christmas

entertainment planned for the whole family.

Please consider bringing a donation for the

Salvation Army Food Bank.

See you there!

Salvation Army Food Bank Drive: We will be holding our Annual Food Bank

Drive this month. Hamper boxes will be placed

in the hallway by the office to accept your do-

nations of non-perishable food items. Thank

you for your support.

BC Fruit and Vegetable Program

We continue to enjoy the school wide Fruit and Veggie program at Raymer Ele-

mentary. Thank you to Erin Daum for organizing and distributing the fresh BC

fruits and veggies to students and staff every two weeks. The objectives of the

BC School Fruit and Vegetable Nutritional Program are to increase the con-

sumption of local fruits and vegetables, the awareness of the health benefits of

fruits and vegetables, the awareness of fruits and vegetables grown in BC, and

the awareness of the safe handling practices of fruits and vegetables.

The snacks provided are intended to be consumed in a classroom setting. It is

not a substitute for breakfast, recess snack or lunch.

Winter Safety Reminders Dress warmly for outside play breaks.

Rolling snowballs for snowmen and forts is fun. Throwing snowballs on

school property, at bus stops, or between home and school is against

the school code of conduct promoting respect for self, others, and

property.

Face-washing, ice throwing and slush kicking do not meet our expectations for caring

behaviour.

Don’t Forget Your Dose of DPA!

(Daily Physical Activity)

As the harvest season closes and winter sneaks around the cor-

ner, it is hard not to resist staying indoors, relaxing, and drinking

a cup of cocoa (unsweetened of course!). Before you settle in for the

evening… don’t forget about your daily dose of DPA!

Research tells us that we all should be incorporating 60 minutes of physi-

cal activity into our day, but keep in mind that bouts of 10 minutes of

DPA added up throughout the day is also advantageous.

Books and magazines make great Christmas gifts. Enjoy

reading over the holiday.

Are you on the Raymer email list? If not, go to our website and sign up. We

will send you important notices as well as the monthly newsletter

and calendar.

Literacy At Home… “The greatest gift is the passion for reading.

It is cheap, it consoles, it distracts, it excites.

It gives you knowledge of the world and experience of a wide kind.”

~Elizabeth Hardwick~

Here are some ideas to keep children interested in learning and reading over the

holidays:

Make a list, check it twice: ask the kids to help you make a grocery list of all the goodies

you will need.

Books under the tree: give the gift of reading by putting a few books or a subscription to a

high quality magazine under the tree. Having a variety of reading materials is an

important factor in creating life long readers.

‘Tis better to give than receive: give the gift of words this year by boxing some old books

and donating them to Raymer library. Perhaps this will give new meaning to Boxing

Day and become an annual tradition in your home.

AUTHOR VISIT Thank you to PAC for our author visit. Richard Scrimger presented to all our students from K-6 on Friday November 18. His books are in our library and available at the public library (ORL).
