Online Supports.

I wanted to share three online resources that I thought parents might find interesting and helpful for their children. All three resources are completely free and offer an opportunity to either support a student who is struggling or challenge a student who is already doing well.www.Khanacademy.org

At Khan Academy, students can create an account and track their progress. The site offers video tutorials, interactive lessons as well as ongoing assessments. It starts at grade four and has lessons that lead to post secondary. Over the break I helped my niece sign up start working on math lessons. The lessons are clear and easy to follow.

Although the Khan Academy is known for Math there are also lessons on Science, Economics and the Humanities.

www.duolingo.com

Duolingo is all about language learning. If you have a child in our French program this is a great site to help supplement their day program. The site also offers Portuguese, Spanish, German and Italian.

www.academicearth.org

This site is great if you have a child who is planning to attend university. The site links to a number of lectures from actual university classes at schools such as, Harvard, Princeton and Yale. It will give students a taste of university lectures and more importantly student can sample different fields of study.

Online Survey.

Thank you to everyone who participated in our survey. We are busy compiling the results and I will be sharing some of that information next week.

What’s Happening This Week!

January 21 Grade 8 & senior information night

January 24 Exams begin

Dates at a Glance!

January 27-30 Exams

January 31 Exam Review Day

FINAL EXAMS AND INCLEMENT WEATHER

If an Inclement Weather day occurs during the scheduled exam period of January 24th to January 30th, forcing the cancellation of all exams on a given day, the day for rescheduling exams will be Tuesday, February 4th (which is the first scheduled day of semester 2) and not January 31st as it is a significant faith day (Lunar New Year). In this case, the exam review day would follow on the morning of Wednesday, February 5th, with semester 2 classes starting that afternoon under a modified schedule.

Significant Faith Day!

January 31 Lunar New Year the day after the new moon marks the beginning of the new lunar year. It is the year of the horse. Irrespective of their religion or country, all Chinese, Vietnamese and many Koreans celebrate the cultural aspect of this day. This is the beginning of year 4712 in the Chinese calendar. It is time for renewal and personal relationships, and pledges of prosperity.

The Emily Carr SS Thunderbirds junior hockey team played in their first action of the season on January 8th at the Canlan Ice Sports-York University tournament. The boys began the day with a hard fought 2-0 win over Westmount CI in the morning. This was followed by a 7-2 win over St Teresa Lisieux CHS and an 8-3 win over Northern. This set up a battle of undefeated teams in the final which saw the Thunderbirds emerge victorious over St Maximillian Kolbe by a score of 3-1. The team played all around great hockey and all players deserve an honorable mention for their hard work, sportsmanship and teamwork.

Dear Parent/Guardian:

Re: Meningitis Vaccinations for Grade 12 Students

Nurses from York Region Community and Health Services will be visiting all York Region secondary schools in

February to provide immunization clinics for those students who are not up-to-date with their mandatory vaccines.

At this time, we will also be offering Menactra® to grade 12 students. Menactra® has recently been added to the

list of mandatory vaccinations for students, effective July 1, 2014. Students in grade 8 through 12 will also receive

other information and opportunities to receive Menactra®.

Your son/daughter may have received Menjugate®/NeisVac® in Grade 7, but this vaccine only protects against

meningitis type C disease. Menactra® protects against meningitis A,C,Y and W-135. Meningitis is a serious illness

that can result in severe damage to the body or even death. It occurs mostly in teens and young adults. Students

require one dose of Menactra® to be protected. More information about Menactra® is available at

www.york.ca/immunizations.

Please review your son/daughter’s immunization records. If he/she has not received Menactra®, please encourage

him/her to attend their high school immunization clinic (schedule on reverse) or one of our community evening

clinics (schedule available at www.york.ca/immunizatons) to receive this very important immunization.

We encourage students to wear a short sleeved shirt and eat a healthy breakfast on clinic day. Students will be

observed for a minimum of 15 minutes after their immunization.

Please call the Public Health Community Clinics Program at 1-877-464-9675, ext. 76080 if you have any questions

about these vaccinations.

Sincerely,

Isabel Payne, RN, BScN Manager, Community Clinics

Infectious Diseases Control Division

Dear Students and Parents/Guardians,

Each year the York Region District School Board staff work collaboratively to balance student enrolment and accommodation needs in an effort to ensure that students living in a school attendance area can attend their local secondary school without overflowing to other schools. Further, those accepted on transfer into courses and/or programs outside their home school attendance area need to be accommodated without displacing or limiting opportunity for students who live locally. To this end, this letter is to inform you of the status of new student transfer requests into secondary schools for September 2014.
