TRANSCRIPT
February is always the short month that can seem to take forever—but
not when you are working in a busy school like ours! Our teachers and
students have been involved in Dance clubs, Maker Space clubs,
Science Clubs, Junior and Intermediate Basketball and Yoga—just to
name a few! We are so lucky to have such dedicated staff and
enthusiastic students to help us get through the winter blues.
These days can be deceiving as we get closer to spring! Please make
sure that your children come to school with winter clothing, and having
an extra set of pants and socks is also a big help! No matter how hard
we try, we still find the mud on some days! As usual, March looks to
be a very busy month! I hope to see you all in and around the school!
Thank you for all your support!

EARTH HOUR 2018
We only have one planet. You can help protect it. Participate in
the world's largest single campaign for the planet. It starts by
turning off your lights for an hour at 8:30 pm on Saturday, March
24, 2018. Can we all help our planet for more than 60 minutes?
Yes we can, every day - by turning off the lights and computer
monitors when not in use; by shutting off the water when
we brush our teeth and wash the dishes; by taking shorter showers. Go online and
type in "Earth Hour" for more ideas. Here at school we will be honouring EARTH
HOUR on Friday, March 23.
FOR SAFETY’S SAKE
Please call the school before 8:30 a.m. if your child is going to be absent. We have an answering
machine that is on 24 hours/day. This will reduce the number of call backs our secretaries need to
make. We track the attendance of all our students twice daily. If we don’t hear from you, and your
child is not in school, we will make every attempt to reach an adult to ensure the safety of our
students.
If your child is in danger of suffering a severe anaphylactic reaction to bee stings, nuts or other
allergens, please inform the office immediately so that an emergency plan can be put in place to
ensure that your child’s medical needs are met immediately.
Please inform the school if there are special custody Orders for your child.
Please do not send medication to school with your child or do not place it
in your child’s backpack. All medication must be stored at the office with
your written instructions for administration, in accordance with DSBN
Policy & Procedures. Please contact Mr. Mayhew for further information.
Tips to remember when walking, biking or skateboarding:
Look left, right and left again when crossing the street
Never run or dart out into the street or cross between parked cars
Make eye contact with drivers before crossing in front of them and watch out for cars that are
turning or backing up
It’s always best to walk on sidewalks or paths. If there are no sidewalks, walk facing traffic as
far to the left as possible
Cross streets at corners, using traffic signals and crosswalks if possible
Watch out for cars coming out of driveways and alleys
If what you are doing has wheels, protect your brain – always wear a helmet
When riding your bike, ride in the same direction as the cars
are driving
Feel free to text our school cell phone at
905-933-5889
to relay attendance or other information!
EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS DRILL The staff and students of Princess Elizabeth Public School will participate in an Emergency Preparedness Drill on Wednesday, March 7 at 12 noon. The goals of the drills include:
reacting in a predictable way to an unpredictable situation,
having all students and staff in a safe and secure area,
keeping hallways clear,
moving quickly and quietly, and
developing specific plans based upon the needs of our school.
Each classroom teacher will be spending time talking with students about the procedures to be followed in the event of an emergency situation. Classroom teachers will practice emergency situations as a class, and then we will be having a school wide drill which will anticipate a situation which could be encountered. As with fire drills, some students may become upset or scared during the drill. We will debrief each situation as a class and your child may require some further conversation about the drill when at home. We appreciate your support as we work through our Emergency Preparedness Plans.
EQAO TESTING
The Primary (Grade 3) and Junior (Grade 6) Provincial Assessments will take place between May 22 and June 4,
2018. They will include assessments in mathematics, reading and writing based on the curriculum and the
Provincial Standards for Language and Mathematics. The assessments will not only evaluate the end product, but
also the processes the students go through to arrive at their solutions. Parents are reminded that it is important
that your child come to school well rested and that students be punctual and
attend classes each day of the assessment period. In order to facilitate the
smooth administering of the assessment, we remind parents to avoid test
dates when booking dentist and doctor appointments . This will ensure that
each child is able to put forward their best performance on this year’s
Provincial Assessment. Thank you for your co-operation. In April, you will
be receiving a brochure entitled Guide to EQAO Assessments in Elementary
School.
All of our Breakfast Club participants and our Breakfast
Club staff volunteers send a big THANK YOU to the crew at
Patti’s Place at 87 East Main Street in Welland.
