Workshops and Events Summer@Mville 2017: Master of Fine Arts (MFA) Graduate Creative Writing Program The MFA graduate creative writing program at Manhattanville sponsors non-credit writing events and workshops that are open to the community. These programs welcome writers of all levels to explore their interest in creative writing in a variety of genres. The workshop instructors are published authors who are highly regarded in their fields.

For more information and to register for MFA Workshops: community.mville.edu/mfa Graphic Novel Writing Workshop with special guest Roz Chast Learn to tell a story in the style of a graphic novel—adult and youth (age 10 and up) offered. The day begins with a Keynote presentation by New Yorker cartoonist Roz Chast, author of “Can We Talk About Something More Pleasant.” The adult workshop will be led by Paul Levitz, former CEO of DC Comics; the youth workshop with will be led by Marvel Comics author Barbara Slate. No special drawing skills necessary to participate. Registration: $75 (includes a boxed lunch)

Presidential Write-In This is a four-part writing workshop for all who seek a creative way to express their thoughts about the recent presidential election and current developments in American politics. This workshop will be led by author and Manhattanville MFA Program Director Lori Soderlind. It will include discussion of classic and popular writing concerned with American presidential campaigns, by authors such as Hunter S. Thompson and Rebecca Traister. Participants will craft and revise one original work—in personal essay, creative nonfiction, memoir, or literary journalism—that expresses a researched and crafted view on the contemporary political climate.

Workshops and Events Summer@Mville 2017: Master of Fine Arts (MFA) Graduate Creative Writing Program

For more information and to register for MFA Workshops: community.mville.edu/mfa 32nd Annual Summer Writers’ Week, June 19 - 23 A weeklong retreat for writers of all levels. The week is built around morning workshops; participants choose from fiction, nonfiction, poetry, drama and young adult writing. Afternoons and evenings are filled with panels and readings. Special afternoon workshops in graphic novel, fantasy, and mystery writing. The intensive week can also be immersive; participants are encouraged to take advantage of housing on campus. Keynote Reading: Joseph O'Neill Joseph O’Neill is the author of four novels, including “Netherland,” which won the 2009 PEN/Faulkner Award for Fiction and the 2009 Kerry Group Irish Fiction Award, and “The Dog,” published in 2014, named a New York Times Notable Book in 2014. This reading is free and open to the public.

Teen Essay-Writing Bootcamp Essays. When you are in school, you have to write a lot of them, for class assignments, for college applications, and sometimes even for fun. This two-session workshop for high school students will help participants generate creative topics, explore strategies for organization, provide feedback for revision, and break down the essentials of proofreading. The workshop will be overseen by Manhattanville MFA Creative Writing Director Lori Soderlind, and will team teens with graduate writing students to provide a fun, and productive experience. Participants will create and revise one essay of approximately 600 words.

Grant Writing Learn to analyze the strategies and processes of writing an effective proposal to a foundation, corporation, or individual in this one-day workshop. Examine the elements and characteristics of a successful proposal, including information gathering, organization, and budget review. This workshop helps you focus on writing clearly and tailoring your proposal to the prospective funder. The Work of Leaders The Women's Leadership Institute is delighted to present The Work of Leaders, a professional development workshop for leaders of all levels and organizations. Join us on June 22, when participants will learn that the critical work that leaders do can be drilled down to three areas: crafting a vision, building alignment and championing execution. This interactive session will help leaders at all levels, in all kinds of organizations, apply the simple concepts of vison, alignment and execution to their work. How to Register for Classes in Summer Session I and II Current Manhattanville Students: Register online in WebAdvisor (https://webadvisor.mville.edu/WebAdvisor/WebAdvisor?) for Summer Session classes as soon as you have been advised for the upcoming Spring registration and your advisement "Hold" has been removed.

Non-Manhattanville Students may use WebAdvisor to view available courses. Click the "PROSPECTIVE STUDENTS" link. Select the "Search for Sections" link and then choose "2017 Summer 1 Term" or "2017 Summer 2 Term" from the Term drop-down list. Choose the Subjects and Course Levels you're interested in and then click SUBMIT.

Consent Statement:

located at 2900 Purchase Street, Purchase, New York, my child is registering for one or more courses for the term indicated on the registration form and she/he may return to attend more classes in future semesters. I will make myself aware of the days and hours the course(s) are meeting and I understand the following:

My child may travel to the College by various forms of public and private transportation. Theremay be risks involved in this.

My child’s departure from his/her home or school to the College may be made without adultsupervision.

My child will be expected to follow instructions and directions from College academic,administrative and campus safety personnel at all times.

Course instruction may involve mature subject matter and the presence of mature visualcontent delivered in all media formats.

My child will be subject to the customary rules and policies set forth by the College in itsannual catalogs, hand books, email communications and web site postings.

Upon receiving a welcome email from the College (first time registrants), my child will establishaccess to their assigned Mville Office 365 email account and the WebAdvisor self-serviceportal.

I assume the above risks and responsibilities on behalf of my child and myself.

Registration Notice: 

If for any reason my child decides not to attend classes or discontinue attendance, it is his/her responsibility to inform the College’s Registrar’s Office to either drop their registration by the term’s Add/Drop deadline (courses and grades will not appear on transcript) or withdraw from

courses through the usual withdrawal procedure (courses and W grades will appear on transcript). Failure to do so will result in a permanent failing grade on his/her official

transcript. Partial or full tuition and fee liabilities will apply per the schedules set forth by the Student Accounts Office.
