President of the Foundation for wine cultures and civilisations

1.5 million visitors already welcomed!

What a long way we’ve come since June 2016 and the opening of the Cité du Vin to the public.

Today, more than 400,000 visitors pass through its doors every year to discover the cultures and civilisations of wine. An immense joy and a great source of pride for the Foundation’s entire team, which welcomes them every day and is committed to offering them an unforgettable experience.

And what a satisfaction to see that visitors come not only from Bordeaux, from France, but are also increasingly coming from all over the world (almost half our visitors)!

Wine is a truly universal culture and the Cité du Vin has become a benchmark, the essential visit not to be missed, and a reason in itself to come to Bordeaux.

And it intends to remain so!

The architecture and staging of the Cité du Vin are the result of a close collaboration between two agencies: the Paris architectural agency XTU architects led by Anouk Legendre and Nicolas Desmazières and the English staging agency Casson Mann. This combination won the jury’s approval during the project management competition launched by the City of Bordeaux in 2010, for which no fewer than 114 applications were submitted. GTM Bâtiment Aquitaine, a subsidiary of Vinci Construction France, was responsible for construction. Audacious and emblematic, the architecture of the Cité du Vin is inspired by the river and wine and complements the architectural heritage of Bordeaux. Truly evocative of the soul of wine and the liquid element (“a seamless, immaterial and sensual roundness”, says XTU

architects), the building recalls wine that swirls in the glass, the coiled shape of the vine or the waves of the Garonne, while its golden reflections echo the white stones of Bordeaux facades and the reflections of the river.

To ensure coherence between the content and the container, the designers from agency Casson Mann, Dinah Casson and Roger Mann imagined, from the scientific and cultural project developed by the initial team at the Foundation for wine culture and civilisations, an immersive, interactive permanent exhibition, unique in the world.

The heart of the experience and the offer of la Cité du Vin, the Permanent exhibition (located on the 2nd floor of the building) covers more than 3000 m² and includes 19 different thematic areas to explore freely, without the need to visit them in order. Thanks to digital and interactive technologies (3D images, decors, smell diffusers...), the Permanent exhibition traces, in an innovative way, the epic story of wine culture, which has inspired people and shaped their lives as well as their territory for millennia. As an actor or spectator, sitting

or standing, the visitor alternates between individual and collective experiences, educational, immersive, dreamlike, multisensory... each more surprising than the last, with the help of the “digital exhibition guide”, a device that allows animations to be triggered and comments to be heard in one of eight languages. The average tour takes between 2 and 3 hours, for visitors to discover the 19 spaces on offer at their own pace. For the most passionate visitors, the Permanent exhibition comprises nearly 10 hours of content, so it is possible to spend the whole day there.

DRINKING WITH THE GODS10 April - 30 August 2020

After plunging into the world of bistros in 2017 with Bistro! From Baudelaire to Picasso, music in 2018 with Wine and Music, concords and discords, and glass design in 2019 with Mind-blowing! When art and design take on glass, the Cité du Vin deals with mythology in its 4th temporary artistic exhibition: Drinking with the gods from 10 April to 30 August 2020. Produced by the Foundation for Wine Culture and Civilisations alongside Jean-Yves Marin, and Isabelle Tassignon, exhibition curators, Drinking with the gods presents around fifty antique works (including some special loans from the Louvre Museum and the National Archaeological Museum of Athens) and three monumental creations specially designed for the exhibition by street artists. Through a journey marked out by contemporary sound and visual effects, Drinking with the gods highlights the close ties established by Graeco-Roman civilisation between wine, gods and men and lets us discover the many faces of Dionysus, the chief god of wine, and the wealth of rituals associated with him.

It was with these objectives (safeguard, enhance, pass on) that the Foundation for wine culture and civilisations was created.Composed of three founding members (the City of Bordeaux, the Bordeaux Wine Council and Crédit Agricole Aquitaine), the Foundation is supported by the American Clarence and Anne Dillon Dunwalke Trust and HRH Prince Robert of Luxembourg. Its aim is to safeguard wine heritage, to display and enhance its influence on past and present societies. Recognised as serving the public good by the decree of 11 December

2014, the Foundation for wine culture and civilisations also has a mission to make this living and universal heritage accessible to the greatest number. To carry out these missions, the City of Bordeaux, owner of the Cité du Vin building, has made it available to the Foundation for wine culture and civilisations for a period of 12 years, until 2028. The Foundation is in charge of operation and development of the Cité du Vin, and also has a project to carry out cultural, educational and scientific activities in France and around the world.

The Foundation for wine culture and civilisations is managed by a board of directors with 15 members, made up of three colleges and one State representative.

Its resources come from the revenue of the Cité du Vin (ticket sales and shop sales, privatisations, rent from independent operators) and private donations from patrons.

A twin structure for the support of the Cité du Vin was created in the United States and received the approval of the American government in 2014: the American Friends of the Cité du Vin. Headed by George Sape, a partner in law firm Epstein, Becker and Green and former Grand Master of the Commanderie de Bordeaux in New York, the mission of the American Friends of the Cité du Vin is to make the Cité du Vin known in the US and enhance the cultural heritage of wine by honouring transatlantic friendship. Its first commitment was to finance the Thomas Jefferson Auditorium

(named after the American president, a famous wine lover, who helped to foster and enrich Franco-American relations through the development of the reputation of European wines in the United-States and worldwide). It now helps to support the cultural programme. A patronage campaign is currently underway in the United-States, allowing US donors to have their names engraved on the back of a seat in the Auditorium. European and international residents can also become patrons thanks to the International Friends of the Cité du Vin

Since its construction, the Cité du Vin has included an original public-private partnership by combining public funding and patronage. Represented by 83 corporate patrons, the private sector has played a major role, financing 19% of the construction. Some areas in the building would not

have seen the light of day without the financial contribution of the Builder Patrons, and this from 2011, even before the start of the building site. The Cité du Vin is the first cultural facility in France to reach such a level of patronage support.

The discovery of the wealth and diversity of wine globally could not have been envisaged without the participation of organisations, inter-professional associations, chambers of commerce and regional associations throughout the world. The Foundation has established around 50 partnerships with wine regions as well as with international brands and media that have chosen to associate their image with the Cité du Vin. Throughout the year, these wine partners

offer a selection of “ambassador” wines to the Foundation for wine culture and civilisations.

The partners also commit to making a selection of books and publications available in the reading room in different languages, to continue the discovery of wine regions.

Through their participation in thematic tastings, they provide valuable examples of the diversity of cultures.

« These wines are offered in different areas at the Cité du Vin: a daily selection of about fifteen wines from the world in the Belvedere or as part of the tasting workshops. Carefully chosen, they represent both the diversity and quality of wines from their region, and thus give the Cité du Vin its true international identity. »
