President’s Podium

One of my favourite topics is history. I believe it is impor-tant to look at the lessons learned in the past in order tocontinue to improve and grow for the future – both pro-fessionally and personally. As I round the corner of mytwo-year term as your President, I find myself takingstock of what we’ve accomplished. Following are someCAEM history lessons that I’ve s een first-hand alongwith my plans for the next twelve months.

Lesson #1 – Stay FocusedNetworking and education are definitely the two coreprinciples why people join our association and come outto the events. Over the past year we have worked hardto deliver these values to the association and we mustcontinue on this course as the economy struggles in2009. The results are conveyed in our membershipnumbers: Expo membership has grown 17% and Asso-ciate membership has grown 7% compared to the sametime last year.

Lesson #2 – InnovateThis lesson has been demonstrated in almost everyperiod in history… from the proverbial creation of thewheel… to Smith & Wesson… to Google. Not everyidea is revolutionary, but the real strength of any idea isin the follow-through. One thing CAEM has done verywell this year, in my opinion, is to listen to the needs ofthe members and try new ideas. Again, I turn to numbersto measure results. Our first two Educational KeynoteAddress and Luncheon events in 2009 have basicallydoubled the attendance numbers of last year. Accord-ingly, I am encouraging our Education Committee tocontinue with this newly developed “free forum” formatand to deliver real-time content that is relevant to themembership.

Lesson #3 – Listen & DeliverWinston Churchill was known for many things: one ofthem was his refusal to sleep while his troops werefighting on the front lines; another was his ability tocommunicate. Email, phone and faxes are great toolsthat help us communicate; but I have witnessed thepower of face-to-face in the past year. The relationshipsthat are built from getting together and sharing ideas

are what will carry us through good times and bad.Churchill was in touch with the needs of his country, and I’m excited about the incoming Board as I feel wewill be in touch with the needs of our members and de-liver sound solutions as required.

Lesson #4 – BalanceSadly, we lost another valued member of our commu-nity recently. From the numerous friends that were ableto attend the funeral ceremony of Stan Krajewski, it wasa clear reminder to us that work is just work and peo-ple mean everything. By keeping a positive and clear perspec-tive in each of our lives, we are able to see challenges forwhat they really are and approach them with energyand conviction. CAEM has good balance and has beenable to turn the challenges of the past year into growthopportunities. We all need to continue to work and playto ensure that this lesson is not lost.

There are many other examples of great accomplish-ments this past year and the above is not meant as acomprehensive list or the only units of measurement.I submit the above ‘history lessons’ to you not as adefinitive list, but as a starting point for future conver-sations. Whether you agree, disagree or have a list ofyour own, I look forward to our face-to-face discussionsat the 2009 Annual Conference.

By understanding the road that brought us to where we are today, we will all be better prepared for the roadahead.

The first Health & Safety and the Law course wasconducted on March 25th and was attended bytwenty-two participants.

The participants provided excellent feedback ontheir evaluation forms. In particular, they consid-ered the hands-on exercises along with theample opportunities for questions and discussionto be very useful. They also found the pockethandbook and a copy of the acts and regulationsto be valuable tools.

Steve Basnett, Director, Trade Shows andEvents at Canadian Security Association aptlysums up the overall consensus: “I was very im-pressed with the course and the scope of itscontent. This is a very important topic and onethat I previously knew little about. I wouldstrongly recommend this course to anyonerunning a trade show in Canada.”

We are pleased to see strong enrolment bynon-members of CAEM and hope to increaseour membership as we demonstrate CAEMʼsvalue through the presentation of this course. In order to bring our industry up to speed asquickly as possible, the course will be run threemore times in 2009: as a post-conference dayat the annual conference on June 17, August27(tbd) and October 22.

Based on the strength of the curriculum as well asits relevance to all CAEM members and the expo-sition industry, the Health & Safety StandardsTask Force Co-Chairs – Lisa Mcdonald andNaomi Wagschal, CEM – now plan to approachIAEE to begin discussions on how to make thiscourse part of the accredited CEM curriculum.

For information on upcoming course schedules, and to-pre-register for upcoming dates, pleasevisit the CAEM website at www.caem.ca.

A conversation with Sheila Wong takes

you back to a time where nothing is

hurried. There is a genteel composure

in her nature and a calmness in her

demeanor. She exudes a refined charisma

and an aura of vitality that is absolutely

inspiring. When you enter into her world,

you are the center of the universe. And

her glowing passion for both life and

work is exemplified in every nuance of

everything she does. Which is quite

remarkable when you consider the fact

that she runs a company with 1,000

employees. Not an easy feat, especially

in these trying times.

BY WAY OF INTRODUCTIONMost of us know Sheila for her ability to be quickto quip with a creative witticism. However, she isalso a very pragmatic and down-to-earth personwho is very generous with her time – particularlywhen it comes to CAEM. She has been a proudmember since 1993 and has made a tremendouscontribution to the association.

As a synopsis of her volunteer efforts… Sheila wason the Board of Directors for five years… was Co-Chair of the Conference Committee… was amember of the Communications and MembershipCommittees… was a contributing writer forCommunique articles… and was actively involvedin both initiating the CEM program and sourcingthe management company for the association.

She has also provided ongoing sponsorships overthe years by providing staff for the CAEMConferences and special events. And, last but notleast, she personally oversees the Silent Auctionactivities at the CAEM Annual Holiday Luncheons.

Most recently, she has also completed the CEMcourse and in her words: “It’s a great educationprocess for me especially since I am developing ourown training program to fortify my staff. It alsogives me credibility in terms of my knowledge ofthe industry.”

A POSITIVE APPROACHAs if she needs to prove her credibility or knowledge. The fact is that she is a perfectionist, and true-to-form she runs her business with a steadfast commitment to being the absolute best in the marketplace. And she’s been proving it for close totwo decades now. Her company, BBW InternationalInc., specializes in front line event staffing and currently provides services to about 900 events annually. Her clients include all of the largest tradeand consumer shows in Canada. The company’shead office is in Toronto and has satelliterepresentation in eight major city centres across thecountry from Victoria to Halifax.

Page 12: President’s Podium Sheila Wong MOVING FORWARDMOVING … · latest industry products and services at the CAEM Trade Summit. Whether you’re an industry newcomer or a seasoned profes-sional,

AHEAD OF THE TIMESSheila co-founded the company with her businesspartner Hendrik Bok in 1991 – in the midst of thelast recession. The learning curve was a real eye-opener. They originally started out as a full-serviceemployment agency that also provided recruitmentservices for the insurance and advertisingindustries. They quickly realized that they neededto shift their focus and realign their plans due tothe glut of existing competitors and corporatedownsizing measures that were taking place.

Based on Sheila’s previous background in specialevents (including the 1986 Vancouver Expo and the1988 Calgary Winter Olympics) they decided tomove into the exposition industry. They did theirhomework by attending conventions and observingthe registration procedures. Invariably, they noticedpoor customer service practices and the lack of newtechnology in the service. So they set out to hirestaff members who were computer literate andtrained them in proper customer relation protocol.

As a fledgling company, things were not easy. However, their unique offerings made a lastingimpression wherever they went. In the first yearthey were lucky to break even. By 1993 they wereworking on ten shows per year. By 1994 they hadtheir first cross-country contract. And by 1995 theywere immersed exclusively in the trade show circuit.

PROFESSIONALISM LEADS THE WAYAt present, BBW is well poised as the industryleader. Sheila remarks, “There really is no othercompany that can compete with us on a nationallevel. We’ve had competitors try to copy ourbusiness plan – which is a great compliment to us –but they’ve never been able to sustain it.” Withgood reason. The BBW brand is based on aprofessional team that consistently provides thehighest possible level of service. It’s a very difficultact to follow.

As Sheila explains, “Our greatest success is that weare viewed as part of the event rather than an

outsourced entity. We are the front line for thecompanies we serve. So when we are greetingpeople at the bottom of an escalator at anyconvention centre across the country, it is crucialthat attendees think we actually work for thevenue.”

This uniformity of service is accomplished in twoways. Firstly, all staff members are fully trained inBBW’s customer service philosophy via ongoingworkshops which are currently in the process ofbeing produced as an online e-training system.Secondly, everyone is treated with respect anddignity to encourage a genuine sense ofcamaraderie and team spirit. As testimony to thesuccess of these initiatives, BBW boasts anexceptionally low employee turnover rate.

ETHICAL BUSINESS ACUMENIt is also important to note that BBW hires nocontract personnel. All staff members are employeesof the firm and are on the company payroll. They are also bonded and covered by Workers’Compensation as well as liability insurance.

Unfortunately, the province passed new legislationas of January 2, 2009 that comes as a bit of a blowto BBW. Under Bill 139 an employment agency nowhas to pay employees for statutory holidayswhether or not they actually work on those days. ToBBW, this legislation translates to an increasedoverhead due to additional payroll costs. ApparentlyBBW’s competitors are skirting the issue by claimingthat they are not employment agencies and thattheir people are not employees but casual labourbecause they only work once in a while.

Sheila’s response is typically positive in nature: “Forsure BBW will lose some business because of thislegislation, particularly in this current economicclimate. However, pricing is not the sole issue. Wedon’t provide a commodity. We provide a resource– which happens to be our people. From myperspective, there’s a comfort in knowing that we

Page 13: President’s Podium Sheila Wong MOVING FORWARDMOVING … · latest industry products and services at the CAEM Trade Summit. Whether you’re an industry newcomer or a seasoned profes-sional,

13

abide by the law and that we treat our employeesfairly and with due diligence. In fact, it shouldactually serve to validate our superior service to ourclients because they can be reassured that they aredealing with a company that has integrity andadheres to ethical practices.”

RECESSIONARY TACTICSWhile BBW has indeed been impacted by therecession, Sheila has already initiated proactivemeasures to compensate for the downtime byfurther promoting her staff’s services to conductfield interviews for market research companies. Sheastutely noticed that when there’s a downturn inthe economy, corporations are willing to invest ininformation to gather market intelligence and shifttheir business gears accordingly. In addition, BBWhas been gaining speed on brand awarenessprograms. During a downturn, the trend is to stopspending on traditional media programs and moveinto experiential, face-to-face marketing wherecompanies can get their brand in front of theircustomers at events or trade shows.

Smart thinking. Of course, this avenue is notavailable to the rest of us but the message is tothink outside the box and take advantage ofwhatever opportunities present themselves to youin your given market segment.

WORDS OF WISDOMSheila has always been a major proponent of CAEMand it is totally in keeping with her character thather closing comments would be a salutation to thebenefits of being actively involved in theassociation. “I’ve always worked very hard withinthe membership because I believe in its true value. When you’re affiliated with a professionalassociation of this sort on a national level it is easyto say here we are, here is what we do… andpeople notice. It really offers us the opportunity andthe platform to showcase our services. Accordingly,we all need to be cognisant of the importance ofcontributing to the association for everyone’scontinued benefit.”

On Thursday May 21, more than 70 members of Toronto’s Convention &

Trade Show industry gathered at Hidden Lake Golf & Country Club in

Burlington, Ontario to participate in the 18th Annual Cliff Chapin Memorial

Golf Tournament.

This year, we raised $3,000 in support of cancer research and it is being

donated through Marcela Marijosius of the Westin Bristol Place Hotel, who

is cycling in the Ride For Cancer 2009. Marcela is participating in this year’s

ride in honour of our recently lost friend and colleague, Stan Krajewski. If you

would like to sponsor Marcela, please go to www.conquercancer.ca and

search for Marcela.

Tournament organizers include Red Hobson, John Houghton, Steve Nichols,

Laurie Dunn and Rosana Javier-Underwood. The members of this year’s

winning foursome are Scott Tomlinson, Hope Humphries, Patrick Shield and

Dan Lisle – Congratulations! The weather was perfect and a good time was

had by all. We would like to offer our warm thanks to all who participated.
