"As an elite athlete, recovery and therapy is essential to staying healthy and competitive. I have seen Dr. Devin Young as my chiropractor for years and see him twice a week during training. His care has been especially helpful leading up to and including the Boston Marathon. I have been able to recover faster and easier after races. He is very knowledgeable and professional, and I am very thankful to have him locally to keep me healthy."

The Guild golf outing is just right around the corner and

there are some rumbling among the crowd to get a practice

round in before the big event. Personally I think this is just

another excuse to get together and play hooky from work,

play another round of golf and enjoy each other’s company,

but who am I?

The date will be Wednesday July 9th at 12:00 at Mission Hills

Country Club in Northbrook off Saunders Road. For those of

you in the Executive Committee you can play as well and

then have your meeting afterwards. The cost is $45.00 per

person which includes golf and a cart.

I need to know if you want to play by July 2nd at the latest so

the proper tee times can be secured. You can contact me at

847‐716‐7972 or [email protected]. No $$$$ needs to

be handled until the day of golf. We will touch base on this

again at our next dinner later this month.

As the use of laptops, tablets, and other hand‐held devices increases, warehouses, manufacturing facilities, hospitals, and schools are

some of the enterprises finding it increasingly difficult to provide adequate wireless network services.  Such was the case with the

Wilmette School District.

Wilmette School District 39 is comprised of six schools:  Central, Harper, McKenzie, and Romona Elementary Schools; Highcrest Middle

School and Wilmette Junior High School.   The District serves more than 3,700 students, teachers, and staff, most of whom are using

computers, laptops, and tablets, and are relying on wireless access to do so.

The Wilmette School District had previously relied on older Cisco wireless access points (APs) and wireless LAN controller, but they were

not providing adequate coverage as more and more students and staff were utilizing the wireless network.  The District required more

capacity, better reliability and a solution that was easy to manage.

The District’s Network Manager contacted NexGen Services after reading about the Cisco Meraki wireless option in the NexGen

newsletter.   NexGen’s Cisco‐certified engineer provided a proof of concept solution that included the installation of 8 Meraki APs in the

District’s Administration Building.

The Meraki Cloud‐Based Network Management System provides centralized visibility and control without the cost of premises wireless

network management equipment and software. The Cloud controller will troubleshoot and solve connectivity issues over the web with

real time diagnostics, monitoring, reporting, and much, much more. Cisco Meraki's "next generation" firewall, built into the security

appliances and wireless access points, gives administrators complete control over the users, content, and applications on their network.

The Network Manager is impressed with the ease of deployment, the increased capacity, and centralized management, and feels the

Meraki solution will be the right one for Wilmette School District 39.

I Am Ignoring You So I Can Get Things Done!

I’m not really ignoring you, all the time, just sometimes. How else can I get anything done?

I want to describe what one person at BSSi2 is doing to become more productive. But first a little background. How often have you said “I wish I had more time. I just can’t seem to get caught up!” If you have never felt this, you are both highly efficient and productive or you are not very busy. In this “always connected, instant response” world, we feel stressed and out of touch if we don’t have access to our cell phones, email, texts, and social media. “I’m too busy staying in touch to get anything done.”   For BSSi2, it is our business to stay in touch with our clients. You count on us to keep email flowing, internet access available and protect you from the cyber bad guys. But even we need time to think, plan and work on our business. How do we do it?

My partner is Nick Espinosa, uber nerd (he prefers that term over geek). If you have not met or dealt with him directly, you still have been touched by his technical acumen. He is the go to person for our technical staff, our level 5 support. If ever there was a busy person, it is him. And like the rest of us, he has a challenge with getting things done. So he has started an experiment that is paying off for him.

Once every 2‐3 weeks, he will take an “Out of office” day. He is in town but he is intentionally staying out of touch with everyone but our technical staff. No outside emails, no outside phone calls. He is working on his “To Do” list and on things needed for our company. He has done this several times already. His feedback: He can’t believe how productive he was. He is more organized, has a clearer head and feels empowered. From my perspective, he is a better partner and business owner. He now looks forward to his “Out of Office” days. And it is JUST ONE DAY at a time.

• So I now challenge you to give it try. Get out of touch and get some work done.

• Turn off email, or at least minimize it and turn off notification

• Don’t take phone calls and check messages only late morning and late afternoon.

• Close your door or put up a sign that says do not disturb.

• Focus on what is important to moving your company forward, or nagging issue.

• At end of the day, see if you were productive. If not, ask yourself why?

• Try it at least one more time in case the first time was not as productive as you had hoped?

Let me know if you tried this and how it went for you, [email protected] or 847‐551‐4626

Now if you will excuse me, I have to go back to ignoring you.

QuickBooks provides dozens of customizable report templates. You know when you need some of them, but which are musts?  All of your conscientious bookkeeping culminates in what’s probably the most critical element of QuickBooks: your reports.  Reports can assist you in making business decisions that will help you take your growing company to the next level. There are several that you should be looking at regularly, some of which you can interpret easily and use in your daily workflow. Discuss the more complex financial reports with your accountant.  Who Owes Money? 1) The A/R Aging Detail report tells you who owes you money and whether they’ve missed the due date (and by how many days).  By running the A/R Aging Detail report, you can see whether you need to follow up with customers who have past due invoices.  Other accounts receivable reports that you should consult periodically include 2) Open Invoices and   3) Average Days to Pay.  Tracking What You Owe Reports can also keep you up‐to‐date on money that you owe to other people and companies. An important one is   4) Unpaid Bills Detail. Though you can modify its columns, this report basically tells you who is expecting money from you, the date the bill was issued and its due date, any number assigned to it, the balance due, and relevant aging information.

5) Vendor Balance Detail is critical, too. This report displays every transaction (invoices, payments, etc.) that contribute to the balance you have with each vendor.

Standard Financial Reports QuickBooks report categories include one labeled Company & Financial. These are reports that you can run yourself, but they’re critical for understanding your company’s financial status.  Take time to discuss them with your accountant. These reports include:  6) Balance Sheet. What is the value of your company? The balance sheet breaks out this information by account (under the umbrella of assets, liabilities and equity).  7) Income Statement. Often referred to as Profit & Loss, this shows you how much money your business made or lost over a specific time period.  8) Statement of Cash Flows. How much money came in and went out during a specified time range?  Reports can only generate information about what you’ve entered in QuickBooks and exactly where it’s been entered. So it’s crucial that you follow standard accounting practice as you proceed through your daily workflow.

How Can I Protect Myself From Identity Theft?

You only have one identity, make sure you protect it.

• The FTC estimates that 9 million people suffer fraud annually

• In 2012 alone, identity theft cost consumers $24.7 billion both directly and indirectly

• To put this into context, only $14 billion was lost due to household burglary, motor vehicle theft and property theft

• Out of the 2 million FTC complaints, 14% are due to identity theft, the highest amongst all complaints

• 30% of such complaints are tax or wage related

There are many easy steps you can take in order to protect your identity. Guard Your Information Online.

• A great wealth of information about you is online. You need to change your passwords for your investment & bank accounts at least monthly.

• Pay for online purchases with your credit card, which has better guarantees under federal law than your online payment services or your debit card.

• Be alert for phishing, a trick in which spam or pop-ups mimic legitimate banks or businesses to obtain your personal information, which they use to access your accounts. Always verify that you’re on a familiar Web site with security controls before entering personal data.

Monitor Your Bank/Credit Card Statements/Credit Reports

• Check your accounts regularly so you know when something’s awry. Purchases you didn’t make should be obvious—like a gas fill-up halfway across the country.

• By law, you’re entitled to a free report every year from each of the three bureaus (Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion). Request one every four months, changing bureaus each time. You can order the report directly through each agency, or at annualcreditreport.com. Use this URL—there are hordes of knockoff sites that will try to charge you for your report and other needless services. Scan it for abnormal activity, such as accounts or credit cards you didn’t open. (And don’t fall prey to faux free credit report advertisements.)

How Can I Protect Myself From Identity Theft?

Shred Sensitive Documents

• Buy a shredder and regularly shred outdated bank statements, credit card applications, bills, and anything with your personal information before tossing it into the trash or recycling. Junk mail often includes some of your personal details.

Decide If a Fraud Protection Is Right For You

• Before you spring for identity theft protection, consider the no-cost measures you can take to protect yourself. Remember, despite the hype, the odds of having your identity swiped are actually quite low. And no identity theft protection is bulletproof, so consider these factors before you buy.

o First, decide whether you’d like to purchase the services of a dedicated identity theft protection firm or one of the products offered by your bank or insurer. Many banks now offer customers daily credit checks that alert them to fishy activity in their accounts. Some will also provide insurance to repay lost wages or legal fees incurred as a result of identity theft or fraud.

o Other plans assign you a caseworker to help restore your credit. You can also try to bundle identity theft insurance with your home or auto coverage. Be wary of this kind of insurance, however — these policies can be riddled with exclusions that may prevent you from ever collecting in the event of theft.

o Then there are the specialty companies—LifeLock and TrustedID are two of the most prominent—that market themselves as identity theft protection experts. These companies offer a mix of preventive and reactive tools to maintain your identity and credit, the most common being fraud alerts and credit freezes.

o Alerts and freezes are two measures you can take yourself, so consider whether you want to pay a company to do it for you.

Fraud Alerts

• Some identity-theft protectors will immediately place fraud alerts on your files with the three main credit bureaus, whether you’ve been victimized or not.

• In essence, it forces any bank or credit agency to balk before approving credit requests in your name. It’s not foolproof, though.

• The law only requires the creditor to take reasonable precautions before extending credit. This may only be a speed bump for a practiced thief, so don’t consider it a guarantee that your identity won’t be swiped.

Credit freezes

• Freezes are far more effective than alerts. Icing your files prevents any company from accessing your credit unless you already do business with them, effectively sealing your records against any new creditor.

• Freezes can be a pain if you’re seeking a mortgage or student loan—or any form of credit. You’ll have to contact the bureaus to unfreeze your records, which can take up to three days. Plus, the credit bureaus normally charge a small fee whenever you freeze and unfreeze your files. Credit freeze rules vary by state.

You could say Lynne started Wordsmith over 20 years ago because she was in danger of being made a partner at the world's largest investor relations agency. Or because a tarot card reader told her to. Or because she wanted to prove that wearing pantyhose didn't make her more productive. All of those would be true.

But the real truth is that being a corporate and marketing communications consultant, speaker and trainer allows her to do what she do best: create communications to help businesspeople solve their problems and get what they want. We research your company and industry, learn what makes you unique, understand your target audiences (customers, employees, investors and the media) and create communications that increase your company's success. Our background includes nearly every B2B industry, and we apply smart strategies learned in one market to another. This takes a number of forms:  1. Speaker and Trainer Lynne’s programs provide a mix of 1) theory (neuroscience, body language, personality theory), 2) personal experience, 3) practice (based on learning theory), and 4) having each person create an action plan for using what she or he learned—so the program really can make a difference.

2. Outsourced Corporate Communications Department Small to mid‐sized companies often don't have a full‐time need or can't afford a full‐time professional. We give them the benefit of a senior counselor.  3. Executive Ghostwriter Lynne has regular conversations with business leaders, then creates blogs, speeches, etc., in their voice. “Give me 15 minutes a week and I'll give you over an hour back.” Her goal is to make you sound as smart as you are.

4. Member of the Communications Team Larger firms can be short‐handed, have an uneven workflow or lack expertise in a key area. Lynne becomes another employee: on‐ or offsite.  5. Team Leader Sometimes a program requires a number of professionals. We create a virtual team of experts, hand‐picked for that client's needs—from SEO to Web design to advertising to videography—and then manage the group to meet the goals on time and on budget.  6. Special Situations Organizations facing crises, M&As, facility closings, financial restatements need a communications plan with messages for each audience, strategies to reach these people, training of executives and staff on how to deliver the messages, and assistance with implementing the plan.  7. Projects When a client needs a particular communication—from a website to a speech to executive training—we use a thorough process to create it.

Lynne is author of the book Getting Others to Do What You Want, coming out in summer 2014.

Your life today is full of options – from seemingly small decisions, like how you choose to spend your free time or how you take your morning coffee to the “big‐ticket” items, like which career to pursue or which college to send your children to. So it’s only natural that you want a range of choices when it comes to planning for the future.

Now may be the time to include a plan for long term care as part of your retirement strategy.

A customized solution that is both benefit and feature rich can be found in a traditional long term care insurance policy or in a linked benefit solution that combines life insurance with long term care coverage. These policies leverage your premiums to give you a greater amount of asset protection.

Business owners have the option to include a benefit solution for key employees and possibly an employee paid voluntary program. This offering has the flexibility to customize features that fit the needs of your workforce.

From insurance to public programs, private family support, self insuring or even a combination of these, there are many options to consider.

Whatever you decide, it’s important to have a plan in place to help protect you and your family, and your retirement strategy. Start the conversation today!

Genworth, which, in many cases is the provider of choice, has announced some significant changes.  The most significant change is that Guardian will no longer allow non‐licensed home health care providers, which is a big plus.  Currently, even your friends and neighbors can provide some of your care.  If you are interested in a Long Term Care Insurance policy, I would advise locking in this benefit before it goes away.

Life’s Options  Why Use a Travel Agent?

Planning a trip today can be confusing and time consuming. A travel agent not only arranges the various modes of

transportation, but a travel agent also may be able to save you money with early booking discounts, special fares, hotel

deals and travel advisories. Benefits of Using a Travel Agent

Save Money! ‐ Strong working relationships with travel suppliers and the latest in computer reservations technology enable travel agents to access the most up‐to‐date information on how to get you the best value.

Traveler Advocates ‐ Your best interests are their priority. ASTA (The American Society of Travel Agents) has a long‐standing record of fighting for consumer rights and ASTA member travel agents are required to adhere to a strict Code of Ethics.

Service ‐ Travel agents are knowledgeable and active in the industry. There are programs that provide education, training and resource materials to its members to equip them with the tools to offer the highest quality of service.

Agents Will Go the Extra Mile –Travel Agents work for you and will do everything they can to meet your travel needs. Some agents literally go that extra mile to help their clients.

How do you find a good travel agent? Choose one like you would a doctor or lawyer. Get advice from friends and relatives who use an agent they trust. Since travel choices are personal decisions that reflect individual desires and lifestyles, you will want to visit or call several travel agencies to find the one that best suits your needs. Consider everything from the appearance of the office to the travel agent's willingness to listen and answer questions. The best agents want to establish a long‐term relationship with a client, not just make one sale.

What special services do travel agencies offer? As the travel industry grows more competitive, travel agencies increase the quality and type of services they offer. Travel agents can arrange all types of domestic and international travel, from hotel and resort accommodations to air and ground transportation, including car rental needs and tour packages. They can provide assistance with travel insurance protection, passport and visa applications, inoculation procedures and other foreign travel requirements. Many have toll‐free phone numbers and offer meeting planning and incentive travel services.

A travel agent can be your best friend!
