Success for Adult Learners
• San Antonio’s illiteracy rate is approximately 12.47%, more than double the national average of 5.56%.
• Adults lacking high school equivalency/high school diploma is approximately 18%, half being adults with less than a 9th grade education.
• Language other than English spoken at home is approximately 45.4%, 10% greater than the state average.
• Families living in poverty is approximately 19%.

What is AEL Alamo Consortium?
We support 8 service providers focused on educating and preparing
students to succeed in postsecondary and the workforce.
Bexar and 11 surrounding counties (matches WSA Board Area).
Counties included: Bexar, Atascosa, Bandera, Comal, Frio, Gillespie,
Guadalupe, Karnes, Kendall, Kerr, Medina and Wilson
Grant funded by Texas Workforce Commission with both Federal and
State dollars

AEL Data2015-2016 Program Year (July 1- June 30)• 8175 Students with 12+ hours (3843 ABE/ASE, 4332 ESL)• 211 Students earned their GED®• 946 Enrolled in Transitions Services

Preparation • Basic Academic Skills Upgrading (students with HSE but below 12.9 GE on TABE)• English as a Second Language (ESL)• Preparation for postsecondary education and training (Transitions)• Distance Learning (TxCHSE prep and ESL)
Specialized Services include:• Integrated Education and Training (IET): Career Training combined with
workforce preparation and academic support• Integrated EL Civics (ESL/EL Civics/Career Training)• English for Professionals for ESL students…

How much do the classes cost?

Days, Evenings and Saturdays
• High School Equivalency prep, English as a Second Language, and preparation for postsecondary education are NO COST to the student.
• Often, career training is NO COST to the student. Ex. CNA, Community Health Worker, Child Dev. Assoc., Logistics, IT, and more
When are classes available?
What are the student eligibility requirements?An AEL student must…
– need TxCHSE, or
– have TxCHSE or high school diploma but need to improve basic reading, math, or language skills based on the TABE, and/or
– need to learn English based on Texas approved ESL assessment (TABE Clas-E or BEST)
• 17 and 18 yr. olds
– Withdrawal paperwork from last school attended
– Parent/guardian permission
• 16 years of age
– Withdrawal paperwork from last school attended
– Court-ordered documentation

Assessment Policy (Placement & eligibility purposes only/Not pass or fail)
• Class placement is based on test results
• Student is referred to other agencies for support services, as needed.

Orientation
• Additional information on student is gathered
• Introduce student to program and support services
• Goal setting begins using an Individualized Training, Education, and Career (ITEC) Plan
• Career Inventory completed
Completion
• After minimum hours are met, student is progress tested (per State Assessment Policy)
ABE (Levels 1-4) = 40 hrs.ASE (Level 5) = 30 hrs.ASE (Level 6) = TxCHSE onlyESL (Levels 1-6) = 50 or 60 hrs., depending on service provider
• Student goal/s are achieved • Student transitions to
postsecondary and/or a career.
