Protocols released by DPH
• Los Angeles County Department of Public Health (DPH) released protocols for K-12 Schools on Monday, July 13.
• The protocols outline the requirements that schools will need to implement for the 2020-21 school year when schools reopen.
• Protocols may change as the health conditions change. DPH will update as necessary.

What have we learned?● There is no replacement for Face-to-Face Instruction● The COVID-19 Pandemic is a fluid situation● Scientific data and tracking of cases is extremely critical ● Challenges within state, federal and county guidelines for
schools ● Communication with all stakeholders regarding status of
schools and learning is critical● The Reopening of Schools for Fall 2020-21 will require a joint
effort between staff, students, and families● Support systems must be in place in order to successfully
implement our Reopening of Schools Plan
What we were challenged with:
• Access to technology for students - Wifi• Students adapting to learning from home • Families left in limbo as some parents continued to
report to work• Teacher preparation for Distance Learning
instruction and use of technology resources • Grading for spring semester• Student expectations and engagement during
Distance Learning• Remote planning and work home environments
What we were challenged with:
• Uniform expectations for: face-to-face time, synchronous, asynchronous, and volume of work
• Student Assessments for all classes• Student and teacher workload: 6 classes for most
students; teacher planning in isolation • Support for our most vulnerable students
– English Learners– Students with Disabilities – Homeless and Foster Youth– At Promise-Students
Factors to consider when deciding on an Instructional Model for EMUHSD Students: • Safety and well-being of students and staff - Health Orders• Amount of classroom space available to ensure social distancing• Meeting instructional minutes per day requirements• Time required to sanitize classrooms between classes or groups• Technology - availability and accessibility for students• Family schedule and child care • Number of families who may want 100% distance learning or
online personal learning• Personal Protective Equipment - Availability • Staffing • K-8 Schools - Schedules• Transportation• Outdoor/Physical Education• Nutrition Schedules
Input regarding Instruction Plan for Reopening of Schools - Survey #1
• Surveys were completed by June 30• Parent Survey: 1,100 Responses • Staff Survey: 394 Responses • Student Survey: 1,457 Responses

Parent/Family Survey Preliminary Results
Parent/Family Survey Preliminary Results
“Children should not be allowed to attend school especially with our numbers of infected rising daily. My children’s safety as well as other children’s safety is at high concern. All it takes is one.”
“It’s important for children continuing their education. Staying home is not a long term solution for Covid19. Bringing awareness of covid19 precautions to the children by giving them education.”
“I prefer my child to continue with distance learning at least until end of fall quarter. I will consider blended schedule for winter and spring quarter”

Staff Response to Proposed Hybrid Schedule
“This is the better of the schedules offered. The concern is social distancing and keeping everyone safe once kids/staff start to get sick”
“My concern is the amount of time in between periods and whether teachers will be able to properly disinfect, stay with kids for a few minutes to answer questions and use the restroom”
“I think this is a solid schedule, I just don't agree that we should do this face to face, exposing teachers and students to potential virus infection”.

Hybrid vs. Distance Learning
• Option #1: In-Person Instruction (blended/hybrid)– Allows students to physically attend school for part of their instructional program
and participate in distance learning for the other part of their instructional program
• Option #2: Distance Learning– Designed to meet the academic and social emotional needs of students. This
model will differ from the pandemic emergency distance learning plan implemented this past spring
• Be prepared to transition to full school opening or 100% Distance Learning as local Health Orders changes
Each option presents its own challenges and considerations
Unresolved state budget reductions will impact program and services that can be provided
