QUESTIONS AND CONCERNS
The course is just beginning, and I’m sure many of you have
concerns. It’s no secret that writing isn’t a favorite subject for
students, so I want to open the floor to discussion and concerns:
What questions do you have? What concerns you most about this class? What do you like and dislike about writing?
Unit 2: “Amulets and Elixirs” • “Huh?” In my own life? Oh
yes!• What are your tools, aids,
good-luck-charms, guides, in other words, the things and people that help you daily as well as those special “helps” that pop up when you need them most.
• What do you drink and eat that help energize you?
• What people help you, soothe you, make you happy, or make you feel proud and capable?
Types of Prewriting: One Size Does Not Fit All!
• Thinking! Mulling over while driving, cooking, falling asleep . . .
• Lists, jotting down words and phrases. Allow mess! • Freewriting: writing non-stop for a few minutes. This
is related to a slower version: just rough drafting.• Clustering/bubbling/diagramming/mapping/ webbing:
model on Doc Sharing (and next slide).• Rough outline/More structured outlines with
subsections.• See the descriptions on my handout on Doc Sharing.

Review of Terms:
• Voice: tone, mood: In persuasion papers, we can use some emotion and appeal to readers’ values and feelings.
• A neutral, serious tone is most common in
most types of college and business writing.
• Audience Awareness: think of a group, not just Prof Ann
• Inflated Language is just a lot of hot air! Use
words you know. Jargon (special terms used in any field) may be defined or not, depending on the type of assignment and course. Keep the thesaurus handy, but do not use it too often.
Unit 2’s Discussion Board• CBS news link “KIPP: Knowledge is
Power Program”
For your own DB post, consider • a group that is in your area • a group your job or house of worship
works with or contributes to• a group you or a friend is involved
with
Possibilities:
• YMCA, YWCA• MADD, SADD• Planned Parenthood• A.A., N.A. (and any program helping any with substance abuse)• kids’/teens’ groups• Food banks• Clothes closets• Job training groups• Toys 4 Tots• seniors• developmentally disabled• physically disabledCheck your local paper, too.
A Peek at the Unit 9 Final and Your Research The final essay will be a 750-800 word (3 +
pages), double-spaced essay in 12-point, Times New Roman font.
All the sites and videos you view and the DB writing you do all term long will help with the paper. You will write as a “life coach,” advisor, or mentor to a person who can be helped by your guidance. You will include lessons of the hero’s journey.
Be careful with topics that might be too big for a three-page paper, too hard to research (few handy sources), or just too time-consuming.
Let the material in these early units help you decide on what you want to dig deeper
into!

How Can We Not Put Off Vital Tasks?
Do we have time to keep talking about procrastination and tips to beat it, or should we put it off?
Have you had The Fear Factor ? “I am afraid I won’t be successful at this.” Or, “I am afraid of being measured or judged.”
Ask:Can I break down this task into sections?”
Focus on PROCESS. Stages!
Any questions? Any answers? Final tips: The Discussion Board will not “hold on to” Word doc
settings: spacing, indenting. • The DB has a “timing out” feature: 30-45 minutes!
Be careful! Work up your posts on a Word doc for safe-keeping!
• Have a GOOD week! Thank you for being a team player!
