The SMS sentbyamobile device is received bya SMSC (ShortMessage Service Center). The SMSC( Short Message ServiceCenter) contacts the HLR (Home Location Register) tolocatethe

SMSC is acombination ofhardwareandsoftwareresponsible fortherelaying and
storing and forwarding ofa shortmessagebetween an SME and mobile device.
The SMSC musthavehighreliability,

SMS textmessage is sentbySMSC ( SMS Center ) handsetusing SS7 protocol. Ifyou seemore in SS7,we needapplication layercalled Mobile Application Part ( MAP )which send SMS textmessageusing application moduleMessage Originating ( MO ) and Message Terminating (MT ).
In this protocolwecan answerthatlimitation is in SMSdevelopment. When itwas built, SMS justhaveDigitalCoding Scheme ( DCS ) signaling protocollimited 140octets,whichmeans 140 * 8 bits = 1120 bits.

weuse 7 bit / characters, and foranotherpurposelikesmart messaging like images and ringing tonesweuse 8 bit.Forotherpurposes 16 bitcharacters encodingwillbeused
like for FlashSMSwhich showblinking oralerting SMS.
For defaultalphabetwehave 1120 bits / 7 bits = 160characters. In sameweway,wehave 140 characters in 8 bit,and 70 characters in 16 bit.
Sowecan see nowthat forone SMS textmessageswehavelimited 160 characters for 7 bitalphabet, 140 characters for 8bitalphabetand 70 characters for 16 bitcharacters.
