Definition Of Barcode:

A barcode is the small image of lines (bars) and spaces that is affixed to retail store items, ID cards, and postal mails to identify a particular product , person, or location. Barcodes are printed horizontal strips of vertical bars used for identifying specific items. A scanning device reads the barcode by moving a beam across the symbol. This type of device is called Barcode reader or Barcode Scanner. The most widely used barcode is GTIN 13 code (Global Trade Item Number). An example of a GTIN 13 Code is shown below:

And so on but 13-digit GS1 code (EAN 13) is commonly used with different type of consumer goods. Continued

11-Jul-16 10:11 PM7Uniform Product Code (UPC):The Universal Product Code (UPC) is a barcode symbology (i.e., a specific type of barcode) that is widely used in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, and in other countries for tracking trade items in stores. Its most common form, the UPC-A, consists of 12 numerical digits.

CODE 39 (3 of 9): Code 39 (also known as Alpha39, Code 3 of 9, Code 3/9, Type 39, USS Code 39, or USD-3) is a variable length, discrete barcode Symbology. The Code 39 specification defines 43 characters, consisting of uppercase letters (A through Z), numeric digits (0 through 9) and a number of special characters (-, ., $, /, +,%, and space). An additional character (denoted '*') is used for both start and stop delimiters.

11-Jul-16 10:11 PM9Advantages of Barcode:

Barcode eliminates the possibility of human error. The occurrence of errors for manually entered data is significantly higher than that of barcodes. A barcode can scan easily which is fast and reliable, and takes infinitely less time than entering data by hand.

Barcodes are inexpensive to design and print. They can be customized economically, in a variety of goods and materials.

Barcodes can be attached to just about any surface, they can be used to track not only the products themselves, but also outgoing shipments and even equipment.

11-Jul-16 10:11 PM105. Barcode improves Inventory control system because it makes possible to track inventory so precisely, and hence inventory levels can be reduced.

6. Data obtained through barcodes is available rapidly. Since the information is scanned directly into the computer, this ensures that time will not be wasted on data entry related work.

7. The ultimate result of a comprehensive bar-coding system is reduction in your overhead budget and cut down on training time and labor, which improves productivity.Continued

11-Jul-16 10:11 PM33Barcode Printing Process:You can develop the barcode for your desired product by the following way:

First you have to develop the packaging design through graphics designing software like Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, Corel Draw etc. These software's is commercially available in local market or you can download from Google website.

Second you have to make labeling corrections as per FSSAI (Packaging & Labeling Regulation 2011).

Third you have to draw barcode through software, like Barcode Generator or Barcode Maker which is also commercially available or you may directly download from Google website. But mostly it is done through Adobe Illustrator or Corel Draw.

After that you have to paste this barcode image on your packaging design in a specified area of the surface.

11-Jul-16 10:11 PM34Key Points to remember during barcode printing:The barcode image is not falling in any folding area of that packaging.Barcodes must have dark bars (black, brown, blue & green) printed on a light background (white, light yellow, orange, pink). Never use red as color of bars. Black bars on a white background works best as it offers highest contrast.Dont reduce the height during packaging design development which results loss of scanabillity.bent awkwardly after the product is filled inside a flexible package. For definite shaped products barcode should be placed at Lower right corner on the rear of the package.Cylindrical products: Close to the natural base of the product. The barcode should be in ladder orientation with human readable number on the left.

Pouches: Flattest surface on the rear of the pouch, as close to the centre as possible.

NOTE: As per GS1 INDIA Rules, we cant use Barcode Sticker in any form on our packaging which can be easily removable and hence leads to the consequences of misuse.Continued
