The Three Ps

• Practices: the patterns of behavior accepted by a society; they represent knowledge of “what to do when and where (how individuals address each other, the social pecking order, the use of space, gestures, mealtime etiquette)

The Three Ps

Products: things created by members of the culture, both tangible (a house, a painting, an eating utensil, a piece of literature) and intangible (a system of education, a ritual, an oral tale, a dance)

The Three Ps

• Perspectives: traditional ideas, attitudes, meanings, and values of members of that society (social hierarchy). Note that some perspectives have been lost even though there may be practices and products reflected of that former perspective.

Kluckhohn Values Orientation Method

Five basic concerns common to

all human beings1. What is a person’s

assessment of innate human nature (perception of self and others)?

2. What is a person’s relation to nature (world view)?

3. What is a person’s temporal focus of life (temporal orientation)?
