TARGET SYSTEM

• Target System: individual, group, or community to be changed or influenced to achieve the

social work goals (Kirst-Ashman & Hull, 2001).

• The target system for change is the Social Work Program.

STEP 1: IDENTIFY PROBLEMS

• Printing can become costly for students at Winston Salem State University.

• Students majoring in social work are expected to demonstrate writing proficiency in each

course (which requires more printing).

• Students are charged ten cents a page in O’Kelly Library (Winston-Salem State University ,

2014).

• Some students struggle to pay for printing.

STEP 2: REVIEWING MACRO AND PERSONAL REALITY

Macro Reality• Initially the change agent wanted change to be

mandatory. Due to academic freedom, this is an unrealistic expectation

• Students may not support the idea of the electronic submission of assignments.

• Technical difficulties

Personal Reality• Determined, creative, and assertive

• Positive relationships with Social Work program professors

• Strong communication with fellow Social Work program peers

STEP 3: ESTABLISHING PRIMARY GOALS

• GOAL-Reduce the financial strain on Social Work students caused by the cost of printing

• STRATEGY-Encourage Social Work professors to consider the submission of assignments via Dropbox on

Blackboard or Turnitin

• Individual meetings with instructors

• Signatures of support from faculty and students

STEP 6: REVIEW PROFESSIONAL AND PERSONAL RISK

• Professors may not prefer electronic submissions

• Change agent does not want to jeopardize personal relationships with peers and professors

• There may be resistance from faculty and peers

• Change agent may become discouraged

STEP 7: EVALUATE THE POTENTIAL SUCCESS OF THE MACRO CHANGE PROCESS

• Accomplishments

• Obtained signatures of support from faculty and students

• One professor has agreed to convert 50% of her assignments from traditional submission to

electronic submission

• Another professor has agreed to continue to have all work submitted electronically

• Professional confidence has increased
