In all forms of cricket you must get 20 wickets to win a game. The fast bowlers are there to intimidate and dominate the batsmen, never let them settle. No one really likes facing QUICK bowling… NO ONE.

These men have dominated the worlds batsmen since the Early 70s. They are the best, they are the feared, they are... “The Fast Bowlers Cartel”

MeDAL MoMentFor most aspiring AFL players an invitation to the AFL Draft Combine would be the highlight of a lifetime. In Tim Kelly’s case there might be a couple of other achievements in the next week that could be just as memorable – and may enhance his cause at the top league’s annual player examination. Kelly has enjoyed such an outstanding season with South Fremantle in the WAFL that he is the Football Budget’s choice for this year’s Sandover Medal, to be announced on Monday. And he is entering this weekend as a key part of the Bulldogs’ league premiership assault in the Preliminary Final against Subiaco. At 23, Kelly is considered a mature-aged recruit. But some players develop later and the Bulldogs can attest to his impact on their finals push in 2017. The Palmyra Junior Football Club product didn’t miss a match in the home-and-away season, averaging a tad over 26 possessions. But it is the electrifying nature in which he attracted

many touches that made his some a danger in the South Fremantle midfield. However, the Football Budget panel expects the Sandover Medal count to be a friendly battle with Kelly’s Bulldogs midfield teammate Haiden Schloithe. It wouldn’t be unusual for two players from the same team to be in a head-to-head battle for the WAFL’s prestigious award. In 2014 West Perth’s Aaron Black and Shane Nelson had a duel for the medal that went to the final round of voting. Black eventually won with 47 votes while Nelson and Claremont’s Luke Blackwell polled 46. There was some support for Perth veteran Clint Jones, even though his Demons won just three matches, limiting his ability to poll top votes.

But there is a precedent. Jones’ Demons teammate Aidan Tropiano won the 2015

medal even though Perth won two matches for the season.

If you have a query regarding WAFL memorabilia, send photographs and/or details to Sean at [email protected] or Sean Cowan, c/o Football Budget, PO Box 911, Subiaco WA 6904. His website is at www.waflcollectables.webs.com and he also can be contacted on 0412 760 004.

I just love a memorabilia mystery. For me, part of the attraction of collecting footy memorabilia is to be able to connect an item to a particular team, player or event. These types of items are often the most valuable, too. For instance, a jumper worn in a famous grand final victory or a coin used in the toss before a crucial game are pieces that any serious collector would covet. In my collection, I have a few such items. For instance, I have the Chesson footy used in the game with the highest aggregate score in WAFL history (Swans Districts 40.11 to Subiaco 20.7) and the whistle used by umpire Fred Ryan in the 1946 grand final, among others. The key to these items, both for the collector’s own piece of mind and for the items’ future value, is in the provenance. After all, how do you prove that an old football was one used in a particular match? And if you can’t prove it, why should anyone pay top dollar for it? Without the provenance, it’s just an old footy. Before buying such an item, a serious collector will always do their research. So, when Peter contacted me recently to talk about one of the most important physical items in WA football history, I started researching it straight away. The item in question was an old football that was supposedly used in the game between WA and Victoria at the 1921 national carnival. That match saw WA’s first ever victory over the Big V, while a follow-up victory over South Australia earned WA the title of national champions for the first time. For collectors of WA footy memorabilia, a footy from that carnival would be one of those “holy grail” items. The first question to ask Peter, obviously, was how he came by the ball. And his answer was very encouraging. Peter is the great grandson of legendary umpire Henry “Ivo” Crapp, who officiated in that particular game and was beloved by crowds in both Perth and Melbourne. Peter’s grandmother (Ivo’s daughter) gave Peter the ball on his 15th birthday, along with an album of cuttings covering Ivo’s career. Written on the ball were the words “Carnival 1921 Perth W.A. Victoria v West Australia. Won by WA”.

It was also autographed by the WA team, though Peter had only ever been able to identify the signature of William “Nipper” Truscott, who did play in that carnival. So far as provenance goes, that’s a pretty good start. A few days later, I went out to see Peter and viewed the ball for myself. And this is where things started to fall apart. To start with, Peter’s ball was a Sherrin. The balls used at the 1921 carnival were made by Burley, though for perhaps the only time in footy history they were actually made in the shape of a Sherrrin. And Peter himself had also wondered why he could never spot the autographs of WA legends Tom Outridge and “Bonnie” Campbell on the ball. I couldn’t spot them, either. The real picture finally started to emerge when we managed to decipher one of the other autographs – that of Perth goal sneak Doug Oliphant. Oliphant’s WAFL career didn’t start until 1927.

And other names posed similar doubts – George Krepp (Swans 1934-39), Mick Cronin (East Perth 1930-41), and Max Tetley (West Perth 1931-41). These men were all stars of their day. But they didn’t play in the 1921 national carnival. It turns out, however, that they all played in the 1937 national carnival, which was also held in Perth. The bad news for Peter is that the ball used for that carnival was also a Burley. And Ivo died in 1924, so he had nothing to do with the ball at all. So, in the end, it turned out that Peter’s footy was a regular Sherrin, which had been autographed by the 1937 WA team. On the upside, it’s still a very desirable item and one I would love to have in my collection. But it’s not quite as desirable as the 1921 match ball.Given today’s game is the penultimate WAFL match of 2017, it’s also an opportune moment to remind Budget readers that WAFL collectors are active all year ‘round.

So, if you’re looking for information about any item related to the history of WA football, be sure to have a look at the WAFL Collectables website over summer at www.waflcollectables.webs.com Alternatively, you can email or call me at any time via the contact details below. I’m always happy to talk about footy collectables or the history of our great game.

Preliminary final

Claremont v east PerthClaremont got jumped by East Fremantle in the Second Semi-final and spent the rest of the match unsuccessfully playing catch-up football. A one-point win over Peel in the Elimination Final kept East Perth in the premiership series and they followed the effort with an 88-point demolition of Swan Districts in the First Semi-Final. It was significant 12 players featured in the East Perth goalkicking list. One behind was enough to get the Royals over the line in the previous meeting of the teams in Round 19. But Callan England, Rylie Morgan and Jake Patmore have shown plenty of solid form since to pose a strong threat to East Perth.

subiaco v ClaremontIt was Subiaco that stopped Claremont’s outstanding end of the season run. The Tigers won five of their final six home-and-away matches to finish third. But then the Lions tamed them in the Qualifying Final. It was a turnaround from the Round 17 encounter between the teams, which Claremont won at Leederville Oval. Brayden Ainsworth, Kyron Hayden and Bailey Matera were the keys to Subiaco’s thrilling win two weeks ago and will come under close Claremont scrutiny. The winner will set up a meeting with South Fremantle in the grand final. The Bulldogs were minor premiers with a 16-4 record.

Preliminary final

league

sUBIACo v soUtH FReMAntLeIn a strange way, Peel has given the Preliminary Final rivals some good hints on how to win this match.

Until September clubs had found it very difficult to triumph over Subiaco or South Fremantle.

The Lions enjoyed a club record equalling 19 straight wins

before the Second Semi-Final. The Bulldogs had barked loudly for nine matches in a

row, then hit a wall in the Qualifying

Final.On both occasions

it was the Thunder personnel, armed with

some solid whiteboard tactics, that stopped the

streaks.So, while there will be

an uneasy feeling about watching Peel triumph

again, the videotape replays of their rival’s first final of

2017 will provide clues for the Subiaco and South Fremantle

match committees wanting a rematch with the Thunder in the

grand final.Against the Bulldogs the key

was congesting the forward line. Although South Fremantle had 51

inside 50m entries in the Qualifying Final the attacking players who had

been so potent in the second half of the season couldn’t get the ball to goal.

And a week later Peel just had too much height for Subiaco to counter. Either

in the ruck or up forward, the Thunder stretched the Lions big man department.

Lachlan Delahunty has played as a very mobile makeshift ruckman for Subiaco this season and in this contest he comes up against Brock Higgins, who has averaged 37 hit-outs in 2017. But it is the duels in midfield that provide greatest interest in this overall contest. Both the Lions and Bulldogs have plenty of grunt. Take their skippers, Kyal Horsley and Ryan Cook, both hard nuts who lead by on-field example. Their head-to-head encounter will be fierce. Adam Cockie showed in the second half last week his work in congestion can be just as valuable for Subiaco. However, one of his likely midfield opponents, Haiden Schloithe, loves to drift forward to either set up or kick goals. Then there are Dylan Main, who has been in outstanding recent form, the fleet-footed Tim Kelly and Shane Hockey to worry about. It was tough work for the Subiaco defence against Peel but with Angus Litherland, Jordan Lockyer, the ever-improving Aaron Heal, and Wayde Twomey available the Lions have plenty of experience in the do-or-die encounter. South Fremantle has given Jason Maskos some big assignments in recent weeks and he could be one of the Bulldogs in line to shadow electrifying Subiaco forward Liam Ryan.

2017 Meetingsround 1: South Fremantle 17.14 (116) D Subiaco 11.11 (77)round 9: Subiaco 19.13 (127) D South Fremantle 14.4 (88)

Rodriguez ShieldThe Rodriguez Shield is awarded to the most consistent WAFL club of the season, with points allocated across all three grades. Clubs are awarded 10 points for every league win and four points for a reserves or colts win.

Perth player Luke English was named 2017 winner of the RediMed Colts Jack Clarke Medal with a total of 53 votes at the medal count dinner held at Domain Stadium on Wednesday, September 6. English finished 22 votes ahead of Claremont’s Jack Lewsey on 31, while Peel Thunder’s Kyle Havelberg came third with 30 votes. WA Football Commission CEO Gavin Taylor congratulated English on winning the prestigious award among such a high-quality group of WAFL Colts players. “The WAFL Colts continues to be a fantastic competition that showcases WA’s best underage talent. To win the Jack Clarke Medal demonstrates what a talented and dedicated

English claims RediMed Colts Jack Clarke Medalplayer Luke is,” Taylor said. “We look forward to seeing more players of this calibre emerge from the WA talent pathway as we focus on launching our revitalised talent program next season. “I would also like to acknowledge the WAFL clubs, their Colts coaches and support staff for the tireless work they put into developing our talented players.” WA Football Commission State Talent Manager Adam Jones said English was truly deserving of the honour. “As a 17-year-old, Luke has had an extremely consistent year as an inside midfielder for Perth Colts,” Jones said. “Luke’s game is built on his elite level endurance. His ability to run, combined with his insatiable appetite to work hard, has meant his performance this year has been greater and more consistent than any other player in the competition. “With an excellent all-round game, Luke has a bright future ahead of him.”

PROUDLY SUPPORTINGTHE WAFL

An increased focus on equalisation and sustainability have prompted the West Australian Football League to shorten its season to 18 games over 21 rounds in 2018.The reduction from 20 games over 23 rounds, following a comprehensive review in partnership with the WAFL clubs, will be part of a broader suite of reform and sustainability measures that were recommended in the West Australian Football Commission’s Structural Review of Football.WAFC Executive Manager Talent and Football Operations Jon Haines said that with finals included, the overall length of the WAFL season would be reduced in 2018 from 28 weeks to 26 weeks, delivering projected savings of more than $170,000.“From a club and competition perspective it is a sensible approach that will deliver long term sustainability outcomes with projected annual savings of more than $110,000 across the nine clubs and more than $60,000 in competition costs such as operations, statistics and umpiring,” he said.“It will also allow for a more equal fixture, with all clubs to play each other twice and the two additional games to be scheduled against teams that finished in the same third of the ladder or for a traditional feature game.“It is critical that we find the right balance with sustainability and equalisation, while still retaining the important historical clashes and respecting the heritage of the clubs and the competition.”The 21-round season, which was first floated by the Future Shape of the WAFL Committee chaired by East Fremantle chief executive Todd Shimmon, will also bring the length of the WAFL season in line with all other State leagues.

Season change to enhance WAFL competitionThis includes the SANFL, VFL and NEAFL which are 20 rounds each, and the Tasmanian Football League, which is also 21 rounds.A 21-round WAFL competition in 2018 is planned to commence two weeks later than the 2017 season and finish one week before

the AFL Grand Final. Each club will retain three byes, as well as a general bye if a State game is confirmed. All WAFL clubs will again be engaged in the fixture process for 2018.

was a great testament to female football leadership in WA and congratulated each of them on their achievement. “All three of these women have played a significant role in the success of female football in our State and are highly deserving of the honour,” he said. “Not only have we witnessed tremendous growth of approximately 40% in female participation numbers in WA over the past few years, but great results in talent development with 37 WA players recruited for the inaugural season of the AFL Women’s competition last year. “Allana, Carolyn and Charmaine’s leadership is critical to ensuring this success can continue and that not only do we continue to increase player participation and AFLW Draft numbers, but also encourage more women to take on key leadership roles within football.” The award winners will be announced by the Essendon Women’s Network (EWN), during AFL Grand Final week in Melbourne on Thursday, September 28.

Recent winners of the Football Woman of the Year Award include Daisy Pearce (2016), Jan Cooper (2015), Peta Searle (2014) and Michelle Cowan (2013). Learn more about the achievements of these women at our website – www.wafootball.com.au

Nineteen clubs celebrated premierships last Saturday with the B to E grades’ grand finals taking place across Perth. Wanneroo (B, DBC), University (D1, BJC) and North Fremantle (D2, D2R) were the most successful on the day securing two premierships each. North Beach (D1R) and East Fremantle (E1) made it consecutive premierships in their grades while Thornlie also notched a second successive flag, claiming the C2 premiership in 2016 before moving up a grade and taking out the C1 trophy this season. After the disappointment of finishing as runners-up in 2016, Kingsley (C1R), Osborne Park (C4R) and University (BJC) went on to claim this season’s titles in their respective grades. Only 10 of the 24 teams that finished minor premiers went on to win the flag four weeks later. While there was plenty of success on Saturday, the runners-up were left to wonder what could have been. One team who would have felt the loss more than others was the Gosnells C2 side, which finished the season undefeated before losing the most important match of the year to Bassendean. In the Ian Dargie Colts, Noranda suffered its second grand final loss as well as Secret Harbour, which finished runners-up for a second straight season in the West Coast Eagles Colts. While the B-E Grade premiers continue their celebrations, the A Grade grand finals take place this Saturday 16 September at Steel Blue Oval. Trinity Aquinas has secured a spot in this weekend’s season decider after defeating Fremantle CBC in the preliminary final by 22 points. Last year’s A Grade premier will come up against North Beach who enjoyed the week off after defeating Fremantle CBC in the semi-final. North Beach last tasted victory in A Grade back in 2010 after winning seven straight. In the A Reserves Scarborough defeated Trinity Aquinas to book a spot in the finale against North Beach, which will be hungry for success after finishing as runner-up last year. In the Phil Scott Colts Trinity Aquinas will go up against University.

Can You Help?WAFL historian Greg Wardell-Johnson wishes to thank all respondents to the Can You Help? segment in the 2017 WAFL Football Budget. Responses and ongoing research have yielded 42 previously unrecorded dates of birth for post-war players to significantly benefit the accuracy of the full WAFL league player database. Since the WAFL competition began in 1885 there are 11415 known league players to the start of the 2017 season.

The WAFL’s official historians are striving to complete the details for as many of those players as possible. For all queries regarding past WAFL players please contact Greg at [email protected]. It is intended to continue with the Can You Help? series in 2018.
