AbOUT WAPack an adventurous spirit and bring your curious nature, because there’s nothing ordinary about a visit to Western Australia.

Whether you’re travelling for business or leisure, Western Australia, or WA as the locals call it, is extraordinary.

Bordered by the Indian Ocean, WA is one of the oldest lands on Earth with a living Aboriginal history dating back more than 40,000 years.

European explorers came much later, and while it is widely believed that Portuguese sailors plied the waters as early as the 1500s, the first recorded European visitors in WA’s history were the Dutch in the 1600s. European settlement didn’t officially take place in WA until 1826, when the southern port of Albany

was settled as a military outpost. However, the colonial headquarters were moved to the current capital of Perth. On January 1, 1901, WA joined the other Australian States to form a federation, headed by a Federal Government and supported by individual State Governments.

Today, the Indigenous cultures of WA provide a continuous and living link with ancient knowledge and the land, passed on through song, dance, visual arts, the reading of the seasons and ceremony. There are more than 250 Indigenous communities in WA, home to around 16,000 people.

One of the largest State jurisdictions in the world, WA occupies 2.5 million square kilometres or a third of Australia. Its size is matched by its diversity of landscape, people, lifestyle, economy and climate, which ranges from

hot and tropical in the North, arid in the central regions and Mediterranean from Perth to the South West.

Home to 2.3 million people from over 200 different countries, Western Australia is a melting pot of diverse cultures and influences. The capital city Perth, is home to 1.7 million people and is currently experiencing incredible economic and social growth. As a result of the booming resources industry, Perth is attracting exciting developments and paving the way as a city for the future.

Nestled between the magnificent Swan River and Kings Park and Botanic Garden – one of the largest inner city parks in the world – Perth offers an easy-going and natural lifestyle. With more hours of sunshine than any other Australian city, stunning beaches only a short drive

from the city, and a robust economy, it is not surprising that Perth is among the world’s top ten most liveable cities.

From the city, head to the South West for world-class food and wine, beautiful beaches, luxury accommodation and forests of tall trees.

The Golden Outback is where you’ll find historic townships, scenes of spectacular desert wilderness, outback characters, gold rush history, and the beaches of the Southern Ocean.

And north of Perth, on the Coral Coast, you’ll find awesome marine life, endless white sandy beaches and the warm, turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean.

If it’s an Aussie frontier adventure you’re after, head further north to the Kimberley in the North West and discover one of the world’s last true

wilderness areas.

WA is home to many exclusive experiences, including the Horizontal Waterfalls in the Kimberley; Ningaloo Reef – the largest fringing reef in the world; Lucky Bay in Esperance - Australia’s whitest beach; and wildflowers - the largest collection on Earth.

And when it comes to arts, sporting and cultural events

there’s plenty of diversity – from the Perth International Arts Festival, the oldest running arts festival in Australia, and Ironman 70.3 Busselton; to the Argyle Diamonds Ord Valley Muster, and the Perth 2011 ISAF Sailing World Championships.

• Australia’swhitestbeach-Lucky Bay – can be found near Esperance on WA’s south east coast. It’s a place so relaxed even the kangaroos sun-bake on the beach.

PERTH CbDPerth’s central business district is brimming with entertainment options, which all add to the city’s lively atmosphere. A wide range of funky pubs and bars are on offer ranging from distinguished lounge and wine bars, to older-style English inspired pubs and even one or two microbreweries.

Then, there are the many great restaurants, and the varied shopping scene. Known to locals as ‘the city’, Perth’s vibe is business chic with an extra dose of glamour in the historic west end. Make sure you leave yourself enough time to explore Kings Park and Botanic Garden – one of the world’s largest inner-city parks – or take a stroll along the Swan River and admire its beauty.

WA’s restaurant and bar scene is always evolving, so for more updates visit westernaustralia.com/foodandwine or showmeperth.com.au

WESTERN SUbURbSCOTTESLOE, CLAREMONT AND NEDLANDS

In the heart of Perth’s leafy western suburbs is Cottesloe Beach. The iconic beach draws international crowds all year round which is no surprise given its pristine water and white sand, but the suburb itself is also a drawcard – with pubs and cafes overlooking the water. Go for a swim, walk, or run along the beach. Find a spot on the grassed area and admire the setting, or read a book. Grab some fish and chips and watch the sunset. Have breakfast at one of Cottesloe’s cafes, and watch the morning swimmers, or relax with a cold beverage at one of the pubs.

Shop in Napoleon or Station street in Cottesloe and find yourself among trendy boutiques. Nearby, the suburbs of Nedlands and Claremont also offer great restaurants, bars and stylish shopping opportunities. For a deluxe shopping experience, visit Claremont Quarter, one of Perth’s newest shopping precincts – home to a range of designer brands, restaurants, cafes and fashion events.

HOW TO GET THERE

From the Perth Station, catch a Fremantle line service to Cottesloe or Claremont. Nedlands is accessible by bus. Alternatively, take a taxi.
