The Rev. Karen writes...EARLY LIFEMy Christian journey began when I was 30 years old, in 1984 when I began to attend aFree Evangelic church which gave me an incredible opportunity to receive systematicbiblical teaching. As a new convert it gave me a wonderful understanding of faith andhow to live life in a distinct Christian way. I learned a great deal about strategic thinkingin mission. However, I struggled with some areas of their theology, specifically theirunderstanding of the role of women in the church and their views on sexuality. I felt thatI was being called into some form of leadership. After talking this through with thesenior Pastor he suggested that I go and find a church that would nurture this sense ofcall and accept women in leadership roles. Frankly I was heart-broken and being separatedfrom my wonderful Christian friends was painful, I felt adrift.

St Martin's, Norris Bank in Stockportbecame my new home. Initially I found thevery formal Liturgyand boring hymnsdifficult to navigate but eventually I beganto appreciate its rhythm and rhyme. Thenew Vicar carefully introduced the gifts ofthe Spirit and the church grew. It was avery exciting time and I witnessed manypeople being significantly changedthrough the Healing Ministry. Seeing howit is possible to gently steer a way throughsetting people free to use their gifts was aformative experience for me, one I willalways appreciate. I spent seventeen yearsat St Martin's and noticed that every fewyears someone would go forward to trainfor Ordination. I didn't expect to be one ofthem, however, a new Vicar challenged meto explore what my next step should looklike. He wisely sent me on a three-monthplacement to St. Elizabeth's, Reddish, avery high Anglo Catholic Church. It was likewalking into a parallel universe, a cultureshock, very inclusive and the theatre of itall hooked into my creative side. I returnedto my home parish having seen that ritualcan play its part when done well!

Training for three years on the NorthernOrdination Course was a time of immensepleasure and excitement, with so much new

learning to enjoy. I felt strangely at homewith my fellow Ordinand's almost normal!During training Celtic Spirituality andIgnatian Spiritualty became the core of myprayer life and sustained me through thedifficulties of my final year as I faced lifechanging surgery.

Curacy offered two very different traditionsand contexts. One was evangelical and theother Liberal Catholic and Inclusive, aplace where difference was acknowledged, accepted and celebrated in a grown up andquiet way.

My first post as a Vicar was within theWythenshawe Team. It was a massivelearning curve for me. The Clergy andReaders all pulled together to create a teamwide mission which was challenging butfull of life and energy. It was wonderful tosee how many of the young teenagersbecame involved in the "Wyth-lt," initiativeduring my time there and a joy to see themtaking on leadership roles.

I like change and challenge and I wantedto do something very different. In 2012 Iwas appointed as the Rector of Kinver andEnville (Lichfield Diocese. Serving in twosemi-rural parishes was very different toWythenshawe. It was a pleasure to walk

The Rev. Karen writes (continued)...

into the village to collect warm bread andchat to the very friendly local people. Mycentral task there was to build teams, encourage vocations and initiate aschool's outreach programme. I had awonderful time during my six years therewith people who were willing to try newthings and engage within the community.

Along the way of Ordained life andministry I have enjoyed the exploration ofdifferent traditions and many theologiesbut realise that I sit most happily within a

liberal, inclusive way of being churchwhich embraces both tradition andinnovation, all vitally drawn together by adeep respect and love for scripture.

As I join you in Hale and Ashley I am awarethat you already have thriving ministriesand a strong sense of identity. So I wonderwhat the next steps are? At the moment I'mtaking time to get to know you and yourway of being church and then we shall see...

+ + + NOTICES + + +M56 SMART MOTORWAY NOISE - we need your helpAs many of you are aware, the M56 will be upgraded to a Smart Motorway in 2020. Thisinvolves converting the hard shoulder to a running lane meaning the motorway willhave 8 lanes of traffic rather than the current 6 lanes. Highways England (HE) claim that8 lanes of 70mph traffic will not significantly increase the noise compared to 6 lanes of70 mph traffic!!

Currently, HE are only proposing to provide very basic sound mitigation - they areplanning to relay 4 of the 8 lanes with the new low noise surfacing. Nothing else.Ashley Parish Council have been lobbying hard for additional sound mitigation. Wehave set up a dedicated Smart Motorway team (John and Richard) who have made thefollowing requests to HE:

1. Resurface all 8 lanes with low noise surfacing.

2. Build sound barriers for part of the motorway that passes Ashley.

We believe these cost-effective measures would significantly reduce the noise nuisanceand improve the lives of Ashley residents.HE haven't taken any actual sound readings in Ashley! They have used modellingsoftware.

Ashley PC have purchased sound meters and have been conducting sound recordingsat a number of locations around the village; initial findings indicate that the actualnoise experienced by the village is significantly greater than HE has "estimated" it to be- this could potentially persuade HE to provide us with additional sound mitigation.

We need your helpThis is a once in a lifetime opportunity to get a Motorway sound barrier or other formsof life changing noise mitigation for Ashley - we need as many Ashley residents aspossible to email HE and:

1. Ask what sound mitigation measures they are planning.

2. Explain how the current noise level impacts your lives and what a positive effect areduction would have.

3. Relay the grave concern about increased noise from the 8 lanes of motorway traffic, and ask why their predictions of noise levels are so different from the actual levelsrecorded in Ashley.

The email contact is:[email protected]

If anyone is interested in helping take sound recordings, has any ideas or would like tohelp the Motorway noise mitigation campaign, please contact John ([email protected]).

Moon WatchThis month there are two New Moons.

A calendar month usually has one New

Moon, but where a second New Moon

occurs within the month this is called

a Black Moon. The Black Moon occurs

on 30th August.

Last month we had no cloud cover on

the evening of the partial Luna eclipse

so we had a great view of it in the night

sky over Ashley, it was well worth the

late night just to see this event

happening.

Promise to Pay Cards and Penalty FaresPromise to Pay Cards and Penalty

Fares are now on the Mid Cheshire

Line. The buying ticket key points are:

Use the ticket machine - pay by card

or promise to pay:Northern have introduced a new system forticket buying on the Mid Cheshire Line from30th June. The ticket machine on the stationis able to sell most tickets and acceptspayment by card.

If it does not sell the ticket you need (forexample it does not sell DUOs or Wayfarersat the moment and getting a through ticketto Metrolink is complex at some stationsand not possible from others) then youproceed as though you want one of theavailable tickets to your destination. Whenyou come to payment details then you havethe option to obtain a Promise to Pay cardby using the button 'I don't have a card'.You can also use this option if you cannotpay by card. A Promise to Pay card showsthe station you boarded at and the date -and that you are willing to pay for yourjourney. It doesn't include informationabout the destination or type of ticket thatyou asked for. You can then show thePromise to Pay and buy the ticket you needfrom the conductor on the train or at astation barrier or at a ticket check.

Use the Northern app or buy online:You can also buy a ticket via the Northernapp on your smartphone or buy it onlinefrom their website and then collect it fromthe ticket machine, using the credit cardyou used online.

Buying from the conductor:The conductor on the train will still checkand sell t ickets. If you do not have a

Promise to Pay card they can only sell you aSingle to your destination without anyrailcard discount.

Getting to the ticket machine:Northern do not expect someone withmobility difficulties or coping with apushchair to be able to cross to the otherplatform to get to the ticket machine. Butthey do expect, if you are able to get to themachine, that you will allow time to buy aticket or collect a Promise to Pay.

Stopping fare evasion:With the introduction of Promise to PayNorthern are introducing a new system forchecking tickets. A team of ticket inspectors(not the conductors) will visit stations atrandom and check the t ickets of allpassengers as they get off the train. Theyare authorised to charge a Penalty Fare ofat least £20 (it is more if you have travelleda long way) to anyone without a ticket or aPromise to Pay. Ticket inspectors have somediscretion in certain circumstances - forexample if you have mobility problemswhich make it difficult to get to a ticketmachine on the opposite platform.

Train Ticket Machine at Ashley:The location of the train ticket machine atAshley station is on the Manchester boundplatform, at the far end (Hale end), next tothe bike racks, with the front of the machinefacing away from the platform. Thismachine accepts card payment only, including contactless and mobilepayments.

From 30th June you must have a ticket or a

'Promise to Pay' before you get on the train

and you must allow enough time to get

one from the ticket machine.

Ashley Parish CouncilHS2

The public information event on Friday 12th July at St Peter's Assembly Rooms was, withoutdoubt, a huge waste of time for most attendees.

Complaints from Ashley residents included questions not being answered satisfactorily, different answers to the same question and questions not being answered at all. The latestso called 'refinement' is set to destroy Ashley in a way that is difficult to comprehend. Largeswathes of land will be taken to create a temporary railhead (for 7 years) and a permanentinfrastructure maintenance base-rail (IMB-R). Valuable agricultural land will be lost and theface of Ashley will change forever.

Ashley Parish Council cannot stress strongly enough how important it is for as many residentsas possible respond to the public consultation which closes on 6th September 2019.

www.gov.uk/government/consultations/hs2-phase-2b-design-refinement-consultation

The Council will be arranging a meeting for all Ashley residents in the near future to enableyou to express opinions and views about HS2 and to get advice on what to put in yourresponse.

The Council is currently holding a series of meetings with other parties to better understandthe technicalities and implications of the railhead and IMB-R and also to solicit opinionsfrom other areas affected by these changes. This information will be invaluable whendiscussing the changes with residents at the Ashley residents' meeting.
