POWER ENGINEERING This article gives a short description of power engineering as a subfield of energy engineering that deals with generation, transmission, distribution and utilization of electric power. It also explains methods used to connect and provide electric energy to residential customers. Because of the continuous increase in demand for power, most power grids have adopted three-phase electric power with alternating current and even low-power appliances rely upon single-phase electric power. Although some remote locations can accept off-grid power system, on-grid power system is more used so users do not need to generate their own electricity. The author also discusses important role of transformers because of their ability to convert and reconvert (higher) voltages. At the end an explanation is given why electrical substations are necessary.
