TRANSCRIPT
2 Power Augmentation System
Customer Background
The customer makes solid state power augmentation systems that are
high performance, safe, sustainable, and cost-effective. This unique combination of
attributes delivers industry-leading value for customers to lower their energy cost by
eliminating power spikes in the power grid. A battery system is optimized for
businesses that have large machines, augmenting the startup power required by using
battery power to start machines up each morning. With special power inversion
technology these large battery array systems provide flexible short term power
capabilities that optimizes the existing power infrastructure to minimize energy
penalties for large power spikes during high demand times of day. This is done by
charging the power system batteries at night when demand is low and power rates are
low, then reused in the morning to start machines up again.
3 Power Augmentation System
Challenge
The customer needed an off the shelf system to run Linux, was DIN rail
mountable, built to be reliable, and offered the ability to communicate via
LAN or cellular network to monitor their system performance and statistics.
Initially they considered the rBOX610 with RISC CPU. After considering the
added work for software development and sustaining the software, they
changed direction to use a x86 PC compatible system which costs more and
uses more power.

Application
• Stationary power storage systems, using Lithium Iron Phosphate batteries.
• Energy companies endorse this idea to help minimize grid spikes in the power infrastructure, helping to smooth out power usage to prevent brown outs during high use timeframes.
• Electrical rates will continue to grow. This product helps minimize cost of energy.
• ROI for most applications is 2-3 years due to energy savings. Systems will last 5-7 years estimated.
