EXCELLENCE INNOVATION SUCCESS COMMUNITY POTTSVILLEBEACH PUBLIC SCHOOL Wednesday 4 March 2020 Term 1 Week 6 PRINCIPAL NEWS What a wonderful turnout we had for the Luke Kennedy sessions we conducted on Monday. I hope your children came home and shared with you his inspirational words. Thank you also to the parents who were able to come along to the parent session. I know some of you were unable to make it due to other commitments but I was very impressed with the crowd - well done Pottsville! I hope you also took home some key messages about mental health and looking after yourselves and your children. I have had the pleasure of meeting with the Pottsville Neighbourhood Centre and the Pre-School next door over the past week. It is important to me that we strengthen partnerships within our community as our school is a vital hub that parents will always be welcome in. I had very strong messages about our community, how we work together and look after each other. Our school is your school and we will be inclusive of you at every opportunity. At the P&C Meeting on Tuesday night we were able to share some proposed new playground equipment designs that the P&C is funding. We will put the designs on display to receive your feedback (and feedback from the kids) and make any necessary changes. Once we get the feedback, I will call a meeting of the playground working party to finalise the designs. Thank you to the parents who indicated they’d like to join the working party. All going well, it will be installed around September/October. In the mean time the existing playground equipment (currently located at the back of the school) will be moved to where the green shed is located in the playground (it will be removed). This will happen over the school holiday period in April. It is then hoped the new equipment will ‘hug’ the fence line towards the front of the school, so we don’t lose valuable playground space. We will again be interrupted in the coming weeks as the last of the capital works program will commence. The roof on the hall, canteen and canteen cola are scheduled to be replaced. The hall will be out of action for several weeks however the canteen should remain open with some limited access. The bike racks will be temporarily moved and will be located where the other bike racks are now (behind the Stage 3 classrooms). There will also be restricted access to the staff car park. I will keep you informed when a time line is provided to me. Once completed, it should be the last of any major works for our school. This week, our teachers began professional learning sessions and will be focusing on explicit teaching. Each stage will spend a half day with their teams, participating in learning that has been designed by the executive team. We will then have weekly check-in sessions where teachers will share evidence of success and discuss any changes in teaching practice they have implemented to improve learning outcomes. I have been very impressed with our teachers commitment to their learning. We look forward to sharing with you evidence of success! See you at the coffee van! NAPLAN During May 2020 learners at our school in Years 3 and 5 will sit the NAPLAN paper assessment. The schedule for dates and tests is as follows: Tuesday 12 May - Language Conventions test (spelling, grammar, punctuation) and Writing test Wednesday 13 May - Reading test Thursday 14 May - Numeracy test On Friday 15 May - a ‘catch-up’ day is scheduled for learners who missed a test or were absent on a test day. Learmers may be exempt from the NAPLAN test if they: • are newly arrived in Australia (less than one year before the test) and with a language background other than English, or • have significant intellectual disability and/or significant co-existing conditions which severely limit their capacity to participate in the tests. All other learners are expected to participate in the tests. DEPUTY NEWSTell Them From Me Survey - Years 4-6 - I am delighted that this term, our school, like many other public schools in the state, will participate in a Department of Education initiative: the Tell Them From Me student feedback survey. The survey measures factors that are known to affect academic achievement and other learner outcomes. The focus of the NSW-wide survey is on learner wellbeing, engagement and effective teaching practices. More information about the survey is available at: http://surveys.cese.nsw.gov.auThe survey is a great opportunity for our learners to provide us with valuable and quick feedback on what they think about school life, how engaged they are with school and the different ways that teachers interact with them. Capturing the voices of our learners will help improve how we do things at our school. I want to assure you that the survey is confidential. The survey is conducted online and will typically take less than 30 minutes to complete. It will be administered during school hours between now and the end of term for our Year 4-6 learners only. Participating in the survey is entirely voluntary. Please see attached opt out form.Attendance - Regular attendance at school is essential to assist learners to maximise their potential. Schools, in partnership with parents, are responsible for promoting the regular and prompt attendance of learners. From time to time however, learners may need to be absent from school as a result of illness, appointments and or family commitments. Where possible, parents are encouraged to ensure that disruptions to attending school are minimised to ensure that learners do not miss out on critical aspects of learning. All absences must be explained in writing to your child’s class teacher as soon as your child returns to school. Parents are also reminded that our school day at Pottsville Beach Public School begins at 9.00am . Learners arriving after 9.00am are required to attend the office where the lateness will be recorded and a late notice supplied. The school by law has to ask parents for reasons for these partial absences. Please see attachment regarding attendance at school.Jenny Foster - Deputy Principal OFFICE NEWS - Office Hours 8.30am - 3.30pmIllness - If your child is absent from school due to illness there is no need to telephone the office. Please send a note in with your child the next day explaining the absence. If your child is absent three or more days they will need a Doctors certificate. Please advise the school if your child has an infectious condition. General Consent Form and Student Details - Today each student has received in an envelope a general consent form and a student contact detail report. Please update as necessary and return to school. Your help with this is greatly appreciated. Change of Home Routine - messages to students - THIS IS ONLY FOR EMERGENCY SITUATIONS. If your child’s home routine changes, if possible can you please contact the school office by 1.30pm.
