Rising road accident -A cause for concern

In the recent past, road accidents involving two wheeler ridersare increasing at an alarming pace all over the place. While rashdriving, violation of traffic rules etc. are the prime reasons for theincrease in the road accidents, driving after consuming liquor isanother major cause, which has not been seriously considered tillnow.

Long smooth stretches like the Palm Beach Marg allow thedrivers to push the accelerators just for the thrill. The desire be-comes more strong, especially amongst youngsters, after gettingtipsy, or in the company of friends. It is seen that usually whenev-er there is serious accident, one of the drivers is in drunken state. So far, in the absence of proper equipment, the RTO officials wereunable to penalize the offenders. Now equipped with breath ana-lyzers, the task has become easier. These drives should be con-ducted periodically especially at strategic locations. If implement-ed strictly, it would help in curbing the tendency to drive afterconsuming liquor.

Along with stringent measures against drunken drivers, theRTO should also initiate action for not wearing helmets. Whilethe All India Road Safety Programme Implementation Committeeset up by MOST, has recommended use of helmets as mandatoryfor two wheeler drivers, it has not been seriously implemented.

The use of helmets mitigates to a large extent the fatality of theaccidents. It is difficult to understand why this is not being fol-lowed by the motorists themselves when the rule has been framedfor their own safety? Probably, it is the tendency to defy rules, which forces us not to follow rules and regulations. Earlier, rulesof compulsory wearing of seat belts while driving four wheelers orprohibiting talking on mobile phones while driving, also could notbe implemented strictly due to callous nature of the motorists andthe enforcing authorities. It is highly essential that in view of therising accidents, the motorists themselves realize the gravity ofdrunken driving and the peril of not wearing helmets. The author-ities on their part, should continue their drives as these wouldhelp in instilling traffic discipline amongst the motorists. Only trafficdiscipline coupled with safety devices such as helmets and seatbelts can save precious lives.

vote and exercisingthe democratic rights.Inspired by theinitiative and cam-paign of the formerLoksabha candidatefrom AAP and now anactivist MayankGandhi, who hasstarted a uniqueinitiative titled “Votekar, Ungli Dikha”which is gainingpopularity not only inMumbai but also inNavi Mumbai, theactivists from the cityare organising streetplays and are under-taking various otherinitiatives.

Komesh Shah, asocial activist fromNavi Mumbai said,“The youth should bemade aware about theimportance of voting.Youth will be instru-mental in choosingthe right governmentwhich will work forthe benefit of youth aswell as all the citizensof the country. Underthe campaign which isnamed Vote kar, UngliDikha several aware-

ness programmes likeannouncing about theimportance of votingon all the platforms ofNavi Mumbai bothharbour and Transharbour lines, educat-ing the first timevoters about theirrights of voting etc arebeing undertaken. One of the mainpurposes of this typeof initiative is toincrease the votingpercentage which hasbeen quite poor fromlast few elections.”

The activists havealready staged morethan 50 street playsacross the city.

Apart from stagingstreet plays, eightcyclists are travellingall around Mumbaiand Navi Mumbaiwearing T-Shirts withthe message “Vote karUngli Dikha” urgingpeople to come out inlarge number andvote on 21st October,2019. The creator ofthis initiative haseven tied up with thehotels and take-way

joints to offer dis-counts to those whowill vote. The initia-tive is also beingpopularised across allsocial media plat-forms.

Pratik Yadav, oneof the Founders ofNGO ParivartanFoundation said, “Oneof the biggest prob-lems in our country isvote bank politics. Many politiciansencourage it for theirown benefits. Buttoday youngstersshould understandthat voting on thebasis of caste andreligions is reallydangerous for ourelectoral system. Theonly way to curb outthis is to make peopleaware of the pros andcons of candidates andask them to come outand vote in largenumbers and elect theright candidate. I amconfident that thistype of initiative willdefinitely increase thevoter’s turnout thisyear.”

&Me, a leading Women's Health Brand, has comeup with a unique campaign, '#Unstoppable’

In a country wherepurchasing sanitarynapkins is still an em-barrassment and theword menstruation issurrounded by taboos,&Me, a leading Wom-en's Health Brand, has come up with aunique campaign,‘#Unstoppable’ tocrush the stigma at-tached to periods byinspiring dialogue cir-cling menstrualhealth awareness andeducation. The 3month-long campaignwhich started on 1stJuly has been plannedin three phases (‘Sheis Unstoppable’, ‘Youare Unstoppable’ &‘We are Unstoppable’),each of which cele-brates women andtheir journeys of over-coming menstrualhealth challenges toremain Unstoppable.

The campaign inthe first month fea-tured over 20 celebrat-ed women achieversfrom across corpo-rates, businesses, sports, and the digitalworld who discussedtheir personal jour-neys and untold sto-ries of menstrualhealth. Sharing expe-riences of Archana Vo-hra (Director Small,And Medium Busi-ness, Facebook, In-dia), Delhnaz Irani(TV & Film Actress),Rani Rampal (Captainof Indian HockeyTeam) amongst otherprominent womenfrom their fields, &Meopened up the stage forthese so- called forbid-den talks. Speakingabout their menstrualexcursions, these suc-cessful women in-spired a million othersto break the deep-root-ed anathema linkedwith periods.

“At the workplace,we are in an environ-ment where there aremen also. While peri-ods are a reality, a lotof women do not ac-cept it. There is somephobia/stigma at-tached to it, that it is

bad and somethingthat you should hide.”says Aparna Sharma,a successful author, and the Former Coun-try Head at LafargeIndia.

Overcoming theshame and secrecy

around periods, every-day women, ‘the localheroes’ shared theirstories around men-strual health in Au-gust. Bringing the fo-cus on ‘You’, the com-mon women, &Me’scampaign encouragedthem to participateand tell their tales un-der its second phase,‘You are Unstoppable’.For instance, sharingher menstrual chal-lenge, Amulya Garg,an engineering stu-dent, recalls that dur-ing her PT exam, shewas unable to run andcouldn’t even tell herteacher about the painshe was sufferingfrom.

“It wasn’t easy totalk about it freely inthe open. The sameclassic statementswere passed, ‘how canyou speak about it inpublic?’. It was a beau-tiful but tough experi-ence. I was excitedabout entering wom-anhood but couldn’ttalk to anybody aboutit due to social ta-boos,” said Amulya.

Talking about thecampaign Sheta Mit-tal, Co-Founder, &Me,

said, “The campaignwas eye-opening. Wewere surprised by howcandidly womenshared their menstru-al health stories, justbecause someone wasthere to listen and pro-vide a solution. We

heard stories of sur-vival and women be-ing in constant painand discomfort, hav-ing to hide it fromtheir family, friendsand close colleagues. With our campaign,we wanted to bringawareness as well asa platform where anunapologetic conversa-tion around periods

could start and we arehappy to have donethat successfully.”

In a period of just12 months, &Me hasbuilt a strong commu-nity with over 1 lakhcustomers and hasreached more than

2.1 million people withthe campaign. In thethird and the last legof the engagement, the brand will take itscustomers behind thescenes and showcasetheir unstoppablegrowth journey under‘We are Unstoppable’,the final phase of thepowerful campaign.

“In today’s compet-

itive market, appeal-ing customers is ex-tremely difficult if youdo not connect withthem. Our campaignhit the chord rightfrom the beginning,we reached above 7lakh people in the first

month itself. The suc-cess of the campaignis extremely gratify-ing as it brings forththe ever neglectedstruggles of womenthrough their men-strual journey, some-thing which has beenlong due and unat-tempted before,” addsSheta.

Founded in 2017,

&Me is a brainchild ofIIT and StandfordAlumnus Ankur Goy-al and is co-founded byex-NIKE and HarvardBusiness School grad-uate Sheta Mittal.&Me is solving forunique functionalneeds of women, com-bining Ayurveda withNutritional Scienceinto a portfolio that in-cludes 5 health drinksfor women. The brandis credited withlaunching India’s 1strange of PMS drinks, which helps womenduring pre-menstrualsymptoms of bloating, cramps, and moodswings. &Me’s first-ever PCOS/PCODdrink aims at bringinghormonal balance, and its Beauty drinkfocuses on makinghair and skin healthyfrom within.

Letters to the Editor....

Lend a helping handAt a time when human considerations have be-

come rare, the time has come to lend a helping handto the seniors, especially to women, who toiled hardfor upbringing the family and thereby failed to takecare of failing health and suffer from doing their routine work and suffereven while walking for their regular needs.

Have you ever thought of doing something different? Like, helpingout at a children’s home or planting trees or cleaning up your neigh-bourhood? Try it and in the long run you might even like it. There are somany opportunities available with organisations, and if not, you caneven take the initiative to create opportunities, as volunteering not justhelps you give back to society, but also helps you build confidence, versa-tility, offers you a wider perspective of the world around you and empow-ers you. To add to your educational qualification, it will look good onyour profile as well.

We are a very busy lot, with school work, homework, extracurricularclasses, TV, video games and birthday parties, there are so many thingsthat we pack in a day. What if we could cut down on, say TV time, anddedicate some time to the world we live in? It need not always be aboutsaving the world, but also about bringing a smile on someone’s face orhelping make someone’s life better, even if it is an animal. Volunteeringis not necessarily something that just adults engage in; even you, asschool children, can volunteer in your own capacity and capability —how much time you can spare, your interest, how much you can ven-ture out and so on.

Call neighbourhood NGOs or animal shelters and find out how youcan help. They may need help in different areas like collecting funds, publicity, awareness creation, day-to-day operations or event organisa-tion. Find your neighbourhood or school playground in need of cleaning? Why not gather your friends and help clean up with permission, andunder the supervision of adults. You could sit at home make calls, postrequests online or simple go door to door to raise money for a cause or aparticular NGO. If not money, you could also help organise a clothes/toy/ books drive for a children’s home or an old age home of your choice.Don’t stop with just collecting the material and delivering them, spendtime with the children or the aged at the home. Your time and care arethe most precious things you can give away.

Plant trees in your neighbourhood or school and also tend to them.Volunteer your skills by teaching underprivileged children at homes ora community centre. You could teach them computer skills, English, basic Mathematics and science or events arts and crafts — just aboutanything that will engage them and you productively. And finally, youcan even volunteer your time online to do a bit of social awareness. Putup Facebook updates and tweets on Twitter to advocate a cause that isclosest to your heart – links, tags, pictures, videos or your own opinionon an social issue will help at least a few sit up and take notice.

Some take the opportunity to act as a scribe for a visually challengedstudent or an ably handicapped person. From the childhood we learntthe art of helping each other. We do help within our family and later onextend that to as a social service. We get maximum experience when wekeep in touch with different types of human soles. When we grow older,we help out seniors, who need help during their old age. After all our lifeis to help out and make ourselves busy so that when we are in troublesomeone will lend you a helping hand. Helping each other is a way oflife.

C.K. Subramaniam, Millennium Towers, Sector 9, Sanpada

Think before you speakUnion Home Minister Amit Shah could have easily avoided the con-

troversy of what he said. Now, after a backlash from the Southern Statesof India where Hindi is not compulsory, he says, he had no intention ofmaking Hindi a compulsory language throughout India. Without think-ing twice, his hasty decision and later regretting it, looks very ludi-crous.

While it is important to preserve our national language, a dogmaticimposition of it on non-Hindi speaking States is not likely to unite themasses. The 'One nation, One language' approach does not ensure har-mony at all. Also, Hindi is not the national language of India; it is justan official language.

Avian influenza—known informally asavian flu or bird fluis a variety ofinfluenza caused byviruses adapted tobirds. The type withthe greatest risk ishighly pathogenicavian influenza(HPAI). Bird flu issimilar to swine flu,dog flu, horse flu andhuman flu as anillness caused bystrains of influenzaviruses that haveadapted to a specifichost. Out of thethree types ofinfluenza viruses (A,B, and C), influenzaA virus is a zoonoticinfection with anatural reservoiralmost entirely in

birds. Avian influenza, for most purposes, refers to the influenzaA virus.

Though influenza Ais adapted to birds, itcan also stably adaptand sustain person-toperson transmission.Recent influenzaresearch into thegenes of the Spanishflu virus shows it tohave genes adaptedfrom both human andavian strains. Pigscan also be infectedwith human, avian, and swine influenzaviruses, allow formixtures of genes(reassortment) tocreate a new virus, which can cause anantigenic shift to anew influenza A virus

subtype which mostpeople have little to no

immune protection.Avian influenza

strains are dividedinto two types based

on their pathogenicity:high pathogenicity(HP) or low pathogenic-

ity (LP).The mostwell-knownHPAIstrain,H5N1,appearedin Chinain 1996,and alsohas low

pathogenic strainsfound in North Ameri-ca. Companion birds in

captivity are unlikelyto contract the virusand there has been noreport of a companionbird with avian influ-enza since 2003.Pigeons can contractavian strains, butrarely become ill andare incapable oftransmitting the virusefficiently to humansor other animals.

Between early 2013to early 2017, 916 lab-confirmed humancases of H7N9 werereported to the WorldHealth Organization(WHO). On 9 January2017, the NationalHealth and FamilyPlanning Commissionof China reported toWHO 106 cases ofH7N9 which occurred

from late Novemberthrough late Decem-ber, including 35deaths, 2 potentialcases of human-to-human transmis-sion, and 80 of these106 persons statingthat they havevisited live poultrymarkets. The casesare reported fromJiangsu (52),Zhejiang (21), Anhui(14), Guangdong(14), Shanghai (2),Fujian (2) andHunan (1). Similarsudden increases inthe number ofhuman cases ofH7N9 have occurredin previous yearsduring Decemberand January.

role in developing New India

By Jaspal Singh Naol

KHARGHAR: “Infra-structure development, employment, basicamenities and Housingfor all is our primaryconcern,” said PrimeMinister NarendraModi. He was address-ing the meet organisedat Kharghar for pro-moting BJP and its al-liance party candidatesfor assembly election.

Modi initiated hisspeech in Marathi toattract lakhs of follow-ers present. ”Chattra-pati Shivaji Maharajrule has taught us twomajor things: Securityof Motherland and Peo-ple’s Welfare. Consider-ing these two major as-pects as our duty, BJPand its alliance Partyhave been workingsince last five years inCentral as well as inMaharashtra State. We had won historical-ly in the Loksabhaelection and the samenew history will be cre-

ated in this Assemblyelection,” said PMModi.

He questioned, “In-dia is an emergingcountry and gainingfame across the globe.Aren’t you feelingproud of it?” And thenstated “New Maha-rashtra will playmajor role in devel-oping New India.Like you have madeNarendra sit in Del-hi, you must simi-larly ensure Deven-dra sits in Mumbai.”

50 percent of Navi Mumbaivillagers to boycott Vidhan

Sabha electionHad earlier boycotted

Loksabha election as well

By Abhitash D. Singh

NAVI MUMBAI: The villagers from 27 villages inboth Airoli and Belapur constituency who had ear-lier boycotted the Loksabha elections as a mark ofprotest against the government for non fulfilmentof promises, have decided to boycott the upcomingVidhan Sabha election as well. The villagers, un-der the aegis of ‘Agri Koli Youth Foundation’ haveappealed the people not to cast vote, unless anduntil, the candidates promise to fulfil their de-mands.

The villagers, who have been waiting for therelease of property cards from last 10 years, wereoptimistic of getting it before the election. NileshPatil, president of Agri Koli Youth Foundation said,“The Maharashtra government had come up witha government resolution ten years back, statingthat the survey of the lands of all villagers will beconducted and the villagers will be distributed prop-erty cards. CIDCO while building Navi Mumbaiin 1970 took away the land from all the villagersand now all these people do not have property witha clear title. The houses of villagers are in dilapi-dated state and are in need of urgent renovationbut to carry that out, it is essential to have a cleartitle. Every year when the elections are around thecorner, we are falsely promised from the govern-ment that our demands will be fulfilled, but so far, nothing has been done in this regard. This is thereason we had decided to boycott the Loksabha elec-tion and again we will be boycotting Vidhan Sabhaelection.”

“The election would be skipped by villages likeAiroli village, Diwale, Gothivali, Ghansoli, Ko-perkhairane, Vashi, Turbhe, Sanpada, Nerul,Karave, Agroli, Shahbaaz and Belapur village. These 27 villages, have a population of around 1.60lakh,” informed Patil.

Overall, more than 50 percent of the villagershave decided to boycott the election and this willgreatly hamper the voting percentage in both Airo-li and Belapur constituency.

Few of the seniors from the villages who havecrossed 75 years of age while speaking with theNewsband said, “We have nothing now for our fu-ture generation, which is really disheartening. Itseems that CIDCO has taken our land forever andnow we don’t even know when we will be gettingthe property card. The youths are fighting for therights of the villagers but it is still a far fetcheddream. We are repeatedly assured by the leadersthat our demands will be looked into but nothingconstructive has come up so far. We do not find anyleader from across the party who will stand withus and will support us in getting property card.”

Efficiency should be the hall markThe state of public transport system is a barometer indicating

extent of development of a city. If one goes by this definition, theimage of Navi Mumbai that emerges out is extremely disheart-

ening considering the deplorable state of NMMT, the publictransport service provider in Navi Mumbai. The quantity of ser-

vice is hugely deficient and the quality is abysmally poor. Notonly this, tariffs have also become unaffordable. Still they are being

patronized by local people, not out of choice but out of compul-sion, as demand is disproportionately more than the supply.

The public transport modes in Navi Mumbai- whether NMMT,BEST, ST or local trains- none have expanded proportionately to

the increase in demand on account of large scale development inNavi Mumbai during the last decade. A major fallout of this lack

of vision is increased number of personalized and hired modes oftransportation, which itself has its adverse effects. The traffic

density and traffic volumes have increased tremendously with-out corresponding increase in arterial infrastructure and there-

fore the transport system is literally creaking under pressure. There is an increase in traffic jams and more recently, the avail-

ability of parking spaces has reduced drastically especially dur-ing peak hours. The environment is also victim as huge amount

of exhaust is being released by the increased volumes of vehi-cles. Another major impact of increased volume and density of

vehicles is increase in traffic indiscipline and consequent acci-dents.

Unfortunately, NMMT has not fared well on the expectationsof the residents of Navi Mumbai. This is particularly unfortunate

as a good public transport system contributes a lot by way ofproviding cheaper transport, reduction in vehicle population and

consequent reduction in traffic congestion and accidents and lastbut not the least in preserving the environment. It can also solve

the problem of parking space. Because of its poor vision andimproper management, NMMT is grossly deficient in quality and

quantity of service. Many of the nodes of Navi Mumbai are notbeing catered to and frequency is erratic and the service is abso-

lutely unreliable. To set the things right, there are intermittenttalks of privatizing the organisation, but unfortunately in most of

the cities and countries, the public transport is the responsibilityof the State. More investment needs to be made by the State in

this sector, if these services have to be made efficient with anaim to cater the increased demand. Also, improved NMMT shall

not only compliment the services being provided by railways,BEST and ST, but shall also become the indicator of develop-

ment of the city of Navi Mumbai.

Politicians wake up fromslumber only during elections,

say Kamothe residents

Pothole roads still reality even after 7 years

By Abhitash D.Singh

KAMOTHE: Agitatedby the poor quality ofroads and lack of othercivic amenities, the res-idents of Kamothe saythat the politicians vis-it the node only duringelections. Once theywin the election theynever turn up in theirconstituencies and thecondition of the noderemains the same.

“The quality of theroad is pathetic sincelast seven years andeven after several com-plaints to Corporators,MLA’s, MP’s and theCity and Industrial De-velopment Corporation(CIDCO) the com-plaints have fallen intodeaf ears,” angrily re-marks a resident.

Sharin Mathew, aresident of Kamothesince last five yearswhile speaking withNewsband said, “Theresidents of Kamotheare fed-up with the nonchalant attitude of allthe CIDCO officials. The residents, who havebeen facing the glitch-es of the unrepairedroads and potholes, have gone to the CI-DCO offices numeroustimes and every timewe are assured that thework will be undertak-en at the earliest. How-ever, till date, the con-dition of roads has re-mained the same. Nowthe Assembly electionsare nearby and for cam-paigning many politicalleaders come for door todoor campaigning re-questing residents tocast their votes in theirfavour. However, afterwinning the electionsthey never turn up inour area.”

Mathew furtheradded, “Apart from pot-holed roads, the node issuffering from severalother problems too, which need an urgentattention. Kamothe hasa population of around4,50,000. The impor-tance of this number

dawns upon the politi-cal leaders only duringelection. After that, allpromises remain onlyon paper.”

To highlight the is-sues plaguing the node, the residents of Ka-mothe have staged pro-tests in many uniqueways in the last sevenyears but the authori-ties have failed to swinginto action. Earlier on25th January, 2019, theresidents of Kamothetook to the streets andhighlighted the pathet-ic condition of roads bymarking all the pot-holes of the major roadsin Kamothe area withchalks and distemper. They even assigned allthe potholes accordingto their sizes to the CI-DCO officials as per thehierarchy of their des-ignations.

Ekta Samajik San-stha, a social organisa-tion which has beenfighting for the rightsof the people in Ka-mothe has been regu-larly following-up withthe authorities, butthey too are fed-up withthe attitude of the elect-ed leaders and CIDCOauthorities.

President of EktaSamajik Sanstha,Amol Shitole informed,“All the roads acrossKamothe are in badshape since last many

years. Every time CI-DCO officials promise todo the needful beforethe monsoon. Manymonsoons have gone by,but still the roads re-main the same. Theroads in sectors 8, 9, 10,11,16,17,20 and 21 arethe worst affected.”

“In January, 2019we had launched aunique protest whereinwe marked the big pot-holes with chalks forCIDCO MD and JointMD, while the smallpotholes were markedfor the city engineers, superintendent of CI-DCO. During that pro-test few of the potholeswere filled but eventhose works were shod-dy.”

Beena Singh, a res-ident of Kamothe nearKhandeshwar Roadsaid, “Me and mydaughter have writtenseveral letters and alsocomplained verbally toboth the CIDCO offi-cials and also to the lo-cal leaders but our pleashave fallen on deaf ears. Many problems havebeen highlighted to theofficials of CIDCO butthey never pay atten-tion.
