4 Campus Planning

Charged with developing a Master Plan that will determine the growth of Andrews University for the next 10-15 years, this project was completed by the Graduate Campus Design Studio class at the School of Architecture, Art and Design at Andrews University. The process included several campus and community wide meetings that were used to obtain information about what was de-sired on the campus. The fi nal product, in the form of a book, will provide the University and those who work on new facilities in the future with detailed guidelines and a regulating plan rather than a prescriptive plan that must be implemented exactly.

5Campus Planning

The Regulating Plan (left) was developed as a way to implement the Masterplan while still allowing for fl exibility. It is prescriptive about form but fl exible about use and specifi city. It determines where new buildings can and cannot be built and how frontages behave. This plan is meant to guide primary decision making in regards to new facilities. The Illustrative Masterplan (right) is an illustration of what the campus could look like with the implementation of the proposed plan, it is specifi c about footprints but is meant to be used as an example and for inspiration.

Regulating Plan (Left)• Prescriptive about

form.• Flexible about use

and specifi city.• Will guide primary

decision making in re-gards to new facilities.

6 Campus Planning

Proposed Graduate Quad

• New student quad with academic and residential buildings.

• Currently, all residences on campus are located on the west side. By adding these residenses on the east, we are promoting increased student traffi c across campus.

• Activates a currently dead entrance to the campus.

• Adds 500 new beds for on-campus housing.

• This site includes an alter-nate location for the new Health and Wellness Cen-ter. Locating the center on this part of campus will make it a center for stu-dent life, which will further activate the new quad.

• Renovations to existing buildings expand existing programs to potentially bring in more students.

9Campus Planning

The University wishes to build a new Health and Wellness Center in the near future, since the campus already has acceptable facilities, the Master Plan suggests that the new Center be built as an addition to these, which include a basketball court, pool, gymnas-tics gym, racketball courts and rock climbing wall. This is the prefered location, however, a secondary location is being proposed which can be seen on pg. 8-9. The new facilities will include a basketball court, a therapy and family pool, classroom spaces for commu-nity use, locker rooms, an elliptical and free weights room, and a cafe.

Benefi ts of this site:• Effi cient use of existing facilities.• Most cost effective solution.• Close to different departments

that require use of the HWC such as: Nutrition and Wellness.

• Will be a hub of student activity on the east side of campus.

• Aids in keeping the campus compact.

• a: Proposed entrance court to new facility and renovations to existing facilities.

A Kindergarten through grade 12 Education Campus, located in the New Urbanism town of Celebration, FL, focusing on the eight universal principles of whole person health given by God during Creation. The design process began with the devel-opment of a program and cost analysis, followed by precedent studies and the development of design patterns.

The design process for this project began with the development of problem solv-ing patterns. The patterns are based on the example set by the writings of Christo-pher Alexander and address specifi c issues present on the site. The “New Neighborhood” in Empire, MI is the only new residential development that is compact and walkable. This project proposes to divide one residential lot in the development into three smaller lots to increase density. Emphasis was placed on understanding the materiality of architecture and the logic of construction. Traditional regional construction methods and materials were used: heavy timber framing, SIPs panel envelope, wood siding and standing seam metal roofi ng.

Each of the three sub-lots is designed to have one main house and a carriage house. The carriage house is a small, one-bedroom home that may be rented out by the owners of the main house or sold separately. Parking is provided on Ontario Street, Michigan Street and along the alley that runs behind the site parallel to Ontario Street. Media: Pencil on Vellum (previous page). AutoCad (this page)

A new dining hall for a Christian camp in the greater Seattle, WA area. The dining hall is designed to be lit by daylight and is naturally ventilated; blurring the distinction of interior and exterior space was a major theme in the design. Tasks included Design Development, an extensive cost estimate, product specifi cations and 3D renderings. All images were created using AutoDesk Revit and Adobe Photoshop.
