EXCLUSIVE

UCLAN ‘SHOULD OFFER

Sex workers who are students

at UCLan want the university

to actively support their career

choice.

Their call comes after a recent

report by the University of

Swansea revealing that one in

twenty students in the UK have

worked in the sex industry to fund

their studies. The fi ndings suggest

that as many as 1500 UCLan

students could be employed in

the sex industry.

Pluto spoke exclusively to three

undergraduates using sex work to

pay their way through uni. They

all highlighted ‘a lack of university

guidance’ for students in their

position.

Jayme*, a lap dancer, said: “I

would want fair treatment from

lecturers if I was outed, and I worry

about the impact on my grades

due to the stigma.” She fears that

being ‘named and shamed’ could

also damage her long-term career

prospects.

Millie*, a student working as an

outcall escort, agreed. “I’m afraid

that if my lecturers found out

[about my job] I would potentially

lose my place at Uni,” she said.

“I feel that UCLan is ashamed

of us. I’m worried that if [the

university] found out, I may

not get the career I want. The

university could make it easier

for us to access support without

the pressure of lying. I want to be

able to access services without the

pressure to leave my job.”

Millie added that UCLan should

‘tailor services’ to prevent student

sex workers feeling judged. Sex

workers have suggested holding

an awareness week could be

helpful.

Organisations including

Preston’s Foxton Centre on

Knowsley St provide specialised

services for street-based sex

workers. The centre can also

provide student support if

required. But there isn’t currently

any advertised support for sex

As I am studying my masters in footwear design, I have been looking in to appropriate trends in the market. I have used recent media, trade shows, exhibitions and store visits.

I have had worked in sports retail stores, such as DW Sports & Footaslyum which have helped benefit my research in to trends.

Linking with researching in to trends, colour trends are a major part of designing.

I research and found this to be a Spring/Sumer 2015 colour palette to help with my concept design process.

I created my own bespoke design process for designing footwear and this New balance concept was the first real trial of this process.

The project was to create a New Balance Next product opportunity and the chosen style was hiking boots.

This a complete project, and involved brand and trend research, concept generation to concept definition matching to the brands ethos and language to a final concept proposal.

After the success of the New Balance project, I developed a quicker process to help a mold a 24 hour concept design project.

I decided to pick a random style plus a random brand, to show my knowledge on manipulating a brand identity/ethos to different styles. Once the brand and style was chosen, I set out to complete the whole project in one day, to show my ability to keeping to deadlines.

I completed the whole process in 13 hours and 45 minutes.

Safety The bicycles use vehicle to vehicle communication software, that allows the bicycle and the surround vehicles to interact, it will inform the drivers that bicycles are in their close proximity, to create a safer road for the users of the bicycles

Features

Description

The Urban Vélo is a bike sharing system that is designed to allow users to rent a bicycle from a multitude of dispensaries hubs around the urban environment. The bicycles themselves feature an innovative system, which allows them to communicate with vehicles in close proximity, to avoid collision.

Storage

The storage system incorporates a UV cleaning system, which will remove all germs and bacteria from various contact points on the bicycle. The use of steam cleaning, will remove all dirt and larger particulates and while in storage the bike is completely theft proof. Through the use of clever design the bike can be accessed easily and be used by the public almost straight away. The monorail, track design acts as a method of release, revealing the bike from its once hidden holding unit. Each individual unit has the capability to be combined with multiple units, to create a dispensary hub.

Chain guard Step through frame Dynamo lights Nitrogen filled tyres Coaster brakes V2V Sensor

Each year in the UK around 19,000 cyclists are injured or killed in road accidents.

The rings represent the radius of the V2V sensor, any motor vehicle that enters the proximity is warned of the presence of the cyclists.
