San Antonio, TX 78209
Dear Mr. Hutchins:
As a recent University Studies program graduate of Texas Tech University, I am pleased to have found a job listing for the Human Resources Manager position on the Monster website. I have sent this letter as a means to express my increasing interest in becoming the Human Resources Manager for the Fred Loya Insurance branch in San Antonio. I have recently graduated from Texas Tech University with my BA in University Studies with major areas of concentration in Human Resource Development, Personal Financial Planning, and Communication.
In addition to my degree I also possess over four years of banking experience mostly specializing in new accounts but have ample knowledge of Human Resource processes, which I acquired by aiding and learning from our Director of Compliance/HR Manager. Fred Loya Insurance’s commitment to providing fast and dependable services while offering competitive rates is commendable and only increases my interest in being a part of a company such as this.
Attached you will find my resume. I believe strongly that Fred Loya Insurance will find my skills and previous work experience highly beneficial and desirable. Some of these skills include: Intermediate Experience with Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint; Strong attention to detail; Strong communication abilities; Excellent skill at prioritization; Excellent English grammar, spelling, and punctuation skills; Maintain confidentiality; Positive attitude, motivated, and organized.
It is my sincerest belief that these skills and attributes will be highly beneficial to the organization. I would greatly appreciate the opportunity to meet with you to go over how my skills and experience can benefit Fred Loya Insurance. I will be in contact by phone within a week to check on the possibility of scheduling an interview.
Sincerely,
Amanda Smith

Setting Goals
Long-Term Goal
L8A1- FINAL PORTFOLIO ASSIGNMENT 11
Throughout my academic career I’ve always felt that I have been drawn to a managerial
type position. The only problem is that I didn’t and still somewhat don’t know exactly what it is
that I would like to achieve in the long run. I come from a family where postsecondary education
was not the foremost priority but was achieved much later on in life. My siblings and I all seem
to have struggled with deciding on a career path. I switched from Nursing to University Studies;
that is quite a leap between disciplines if you ask me! However, I will say that I hope to shoot for
a managerial position as soon as I obtain my Bachelor’s degree. After deciding that Nursing did
not interest me much, I took a year off from school to kind of get a feel for things and see what
else was out there that I might possibly enjoy long-term. I left a part-time job in the foodservice
industry and found full time employment as a teller at a local bank. From there my interests
grew. Over time I was promoted into the New Accounts department.
With my areas of concentration being Personal Financial Planning, Human Resource
Development, and Communication, I figured that all three disciplines would come to great use in
my line of work. One thing I may decide to go for is Human Resource Manager. We currently
don’t have one and the tasks of that department have been spread out to the responsibility of
several employees. As it happens, I really believe strongly that it is essential for an organization
to have an HR department at its core. Therefore I believe that I would possibly like to be the
Human Resource Manager for our bank, and see that those responsibilities are executed properly.
The prospective timeline for this goal would be shortly after graduation which will be in
December of this year. The most obvious resources needed to achieve his goal are a degree and
more experience handling HR responsibilities.
Short-Term Objectives
L8A1- FINAL PORTFOLIO ASSIGNMENT 12
The first and most obvious short-term objective I need to reach in order to obtain my goal
is to finish school and graduate with my BA in University Studies. If I am to be completely
honest I will say that with each semester I find it harder and harder to maintain a sufficient level
of motivation to keep going. Sometimes I find myself thinking, why bother? I’m already working
my way up at my current place of employment, why do I need this? And then I remember that it
is highly likely that I will not remain at Llano National Bank for the rest of my working life. If I
were to leave and find other employment I would have nothing to offer other than experience. I
wouldn’t have a degree. I need to get my degree not only for myself but for my future and my
family so that we have greater options and a higher probability for success.
My next objective would be to gain as much experience with HR duties as possible. I
have a year in which to do this and I believe that is a sufficient amount of time to learn enough to
get me started. The third objective might be a little more difficult than I anticipate. It would be to
convince my boss, the president of the bank, that we specifically need to organize an HR
department instead of having the responsibilities dispersed throughout the bank. My biggest
argument for this is that HR business shouldn’t be everyone else’s business since they tend to
deal with highly sensitive information. It is important that that type of information stay localized
to one department so that it is kept confidential to the extent that it needs to be. My plan for
evaluating and measuring my progress towards these goals will be achieved once I speak to my
boss about my interest in having and heading up an HR department as well as by obtaining my
degree at the end of the year.
Connection
L8A1- FINAL PORTFOLIO ASSIGNMENT 13
As I stated earlier, once I began working at the bank I started to take an interest in several
different things. When I discovered the University Studies program I chose the area’s most
relevant to my current job. These areas are Personal Financial Planning, Human Resource
Development, and Communication. The first area of Personal Finance was a very obvious
choice. I knew that this discipline would further my knowledge and be extremely useful with
working in banking. The second, Human Resource Development, I chose because one of my
closest friends at work takes care of a lot of HR responsibilities and she sparked my interest in it.
Plus, I know that HR professionals tend to do really well for themselves from a financial
standpoint. The third area of concentration, Communication, I chose because it is a vital part of
everyday living. You cannot go anywhere nor do anything without dealing with some aspect of
communication on a daily basis.
All three of these areas combined make for an excellent degree. In previous INTS courses
we have poured over the fact that employers are looking for well-rounded individuals;
Individuals who have a broader skill set that is not confined to just one discipline. Being
interdisciplinary makes a person more versatile and in my opinion more hirable. I am much more
confident with this degree than I was with nursing because of the options and opportunities that
are afforded to me with it. I am no longer confined to one skill set but am skilled in many
different areas. That fact alone will be of great value to me if and when I decide that I need to
move on from the bank. By fine tuning the skills I already possess I know that I can reach these
goals. This class has definitely helped me realize my potential in achieving my career and
professional goals by giving me valuable tips and insights to help get me there.
