Last academic year, 2 Poly students were

invited to the White House, 3 Poly students became

National Merit Semi-Finalists, 41 Poly students won

Advanced Placement Scholar honors, and the Class of

2011 received offers of admission from many of the

nation’s top colleges and universities.

Left: A Poly teacher and student work to release a fingerling into the wild after it was hatched at Poly during last year’s Middle School Trout Project

DearPoly Community:Looking back at the 2010-11

academic year fills me with

pride. It should fill you with pride,

too. The achievements of so

many of our students—Poly’s 41

Advanced Placement Scholar

honorees, our three National

Merit Semi-Finalists and many

other National Merit awardees; the Class of 2011’s great

college acceptances, and the many league championships

and other honors our athletes earned—were the result of

hard work and true dedication. Our faculty, coaches, and

students deserve sustained accolades for these notable

successes.

Poly etched some notches on its bragging pole in other

regards, too. Two of our students were invited to the White

House, for example. The first was Nia Froome ’11, who

won a highly competitive young entrepreneurship contest

and met the President as part of her award. The other was

Khail Bryant ‘17 who participated in a young Alvin Ailey

dance performance for the First Lady.

Khail also had the distinction of performing on Broadway

as the Young Nala in The Lion King at the same time as

two Poly alumnae—Grace Gummer ‘04 and Alyssa Gold

‘08—appeared in the acclaimed revival of Tom Stoppard’s

Arcadia. Three members of our community appearing

simultaneously on the “Great White Way” is a Poly first, to

my knowledge.

Happily, this good news barely scratches the surface of

our teachers’, coaches’ and students’ accomplishments last

academic year. In the pages that follow, we detail some of

last year’s highlights in academics, arts, and athletics. I urge

you to review them and remind yourselves what a special

educational community you belong to.

Last year’s successes played a big role in our fundraising totals,

too, I suspect. In fact, I am pleased to report that we raised

$3,540,181 during Poly’s Fiscal Year 2011 (July 1, 2010

to June 30, 2011). This figure includes the Poly Fund, senior

parent gifts, and other annual giving, as well as endowment

and scholarship gifts, planned gifts, and capital gifts.

Your generosity put us $715,284 ahead of our fundraising

goals for the last fiscal year. It also helped to create the

momentum we will need this year as we seek to increase

giving to the Poly Fund and support new strategic initiatives

from learning enrichment and support to school-wide

science programs.

Last year, overall participation rates in annual giving also

increased, a sign that more members of our community are

investing in our success. Indeed, no independent school can

thrive without such investment. For this increased support—

and for fostering a culture of giving among parents and

alumni—we owe a crucial debt of gratitude to the tireless

efforts of our Poly Fund Committee, our Class Agents and

Special Reunion Chairs, and the countless other parents

and alumni who stepped up to the plate last year and

encouraged their peers to give.

Most of all, however, I must acknowledge the support we

receive from each of you. We recognize that choosing

Poly—whether as the school for your child’s education or as

the beneficiary of a charitable gift—is a major decision.

Without your commitment and help, we could not attract

and enroll many of New York City’s best and brightest,

maintain our beautiful and historic campuses, hire so many

caring and highly-qualified teachers, or offer such an

outstanding program of arts, academics, and athletics.

Once again, thank you.

David B. Harman

Headmaster

On the following pages are some highlights of our accomplishments in teaching,

learning, and service during the 2010-11 academic year. This is by no means an

exhaustive list. Last academic year, there were countless shining moments—in the

classroom, laboratory, art studio, stage and rehearsal space, gym and pool, and

on our playing fields—when teachers helped students discover new ideas, skills,

talents, and mastery. They are at the heart of the Poly experience each day.

For our report below, we have focused primarily on a few key

achievements from external assessments, tests, competitions,

tournaments, championships, and other outside measures.*

The Class of 2011 Received Top College Acceptances

Despite last year’s highly competitive college process, the

Class of 2011 still achieved excellent college results. Our

116 seniors gained admission to over 157 colleges (and

one post-graduate program). Over 30% are now attending

schools ranked in the Top 50 universities by US News and

World Report.

22 are currently attending schools ranked in the Top

20, led by Cornell (5), Penn (3), Chicago, Dartmouth,

Georgetown, Johns Hopkins and Yale (2 at each), and 1

each to Brown, Duke, Northwestern, and Notre Dame,

among others.

33% of the class is now attending schools ranked in the

Top 50 liberal arts colleges, with 15 graduates attending

schools in the Top 25. That group is led by Hamilton (6),

Oberlin, Vassar, and Wesleyan (2 at each), and 1 each

going to Haverford, West Point, and Williams.

Poly Students Won 21 PSAT/NMSQT National Merit Honors

The Class of 2011 earned 3 National Merit Semi-Finalist

slots; 11 National Merit Commendations; and 2 National

Achievement Scholarships while 6 others were designated

National Achievement Program Outstanding Participants.

Poly Students Won 41 AP Scholars Honors

41 Poly students earned Advanced Placement (AP) Scholar

honors and continued to score extremely well in a range

of challenging AP tests including: Art History, Biology,

Computer Science, English Literature, English Language,

European History, Latin Literature, Physics, Spanish

Language, Spanish Literature, U.S. History, World History,

among other subjects.

*Note: For reasons of space, no individual students are named in the following summaries.

Financials

Poly Prep’s Financials: Fiscal Year 2011(July 1, 2010 to June 30, 2011)

Poly Prep is a careful shepherd of its finances. We are

determined to meet our educational mission efficiently,

now and in the future.

The school also strategically budgets its expenditures.

For example, during Fiscal Year 2011, we directed 95%

of our annual expenditures towards our programs and

teaching, teacher and staff salaries and benefits,

financial aid, and our physical plant and depreciation,

while only 5% were absorbed by administrative costs.

Prudent financial management enables us to offer

outstanding academics, athletics, arts, and two beautiful

historic campuses while attracting and retaining a

dedicated and highly-qualified faculty and a gifted and

diverse student body.
