LETTER FROM THE HEADMASTER

CHARTING THE COURSE AHEAD

Dear Poly Community:

As I do each year at Opening Chapel, I brought an object to illustrate a key point to our students. This September, I held up a ship’s ruler, a tool used in ocean navigation. I explained that you place the ruler on a nautical chart and

point the ruler to your destination. Next, you align it with the chart’s compass indications, and then draw a line from point A to point B to set your course. I asked each student to imagine how he or she was going to chart a course to the end of a successful academic term.

But, of course, I was also thinking about Poly itself. Where is the school heading? Do we have the right programs in place to get there? How will we plan and complete our own institutional journey in the difficult waters ahead?

Our answer to these questions is a new, ambitious, three-year strategic plan for Poly. We crafted our plan with input from faculty, staff, trustees, parents, and alumni. We also researched local and national educational trends beyond our walls. I am deeply enthusiastic about the result. Our goal was both to better prepare “the next diverse generation of leaders and global citizens”—to quote from our mission statement—while retaining the fundamental ideals that make the Poly experience uniquely valuable.

Poly’s new “course for the future” consists of three parts: 1) academics and programs; 2) institutional advancement; and 3) administration and operations. Under the first umbrella, we will be launching exciting initiatives in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM); 21st century skills; teaching and learning excellence; global humanities; greening across the curriculum; and enhanced character and wellness education. Under the other two umbrellas, we will work to support our academic and program initiatives and enable the growth of each Poly student in mind, body, and character.

Of course, we will not be able to complete our journey over the next three years without your help. While much of our new strategic plan will require us to rethink curriculum, teaching methods, and goals, some may necessitate additional staff or expanded facilities. We will keep you informed as we look ahead and identify key areas of need. I look forward to partnering with you this year—and in the years ahead—to make sure the S.S. Poly reaches her port.

LETTER FROM THE ASSOCIATE HEAD OF SCHOOL

REFLECTIONS ON SUCCESS: POLY’S “CAST” HAS A MARQUEE PERFORMANCE

Dear Poly Community:

The powerful ties that link parents, alumni, students, faculty, and staff to our school are extraordinary. Whether I am at a wedding of my own former students, or when we

gather to cheer on girls’ varsity soccer, the spring Middle School musical, or fourth graders during Clapping Out Day, or when we collectively help Poly families in need, I am incredibly moved by the institution I have been part of for forty-five years. We often say that Poly is family. But, for me, it is more than that. Poly is a home.

That is why I am also moved when I look back and review the substantial support so many of you offered Poly during the last fiscal year. The figures alone speak volumes. Over 1,300 of you have made donations to Poly. The school received 2,230 gifts. Poly’s Gala 2012 raised $258,448, the most in our history. The Jon Bon Jovi & Friends Benefit Concert was the single most successful fundraiser in the school’s history, launching a fundraising effort that ultimately raised $1.6 million for learning enrichment and support. Total giving last year—including events, the Poly Fund, scholarships, Senior Parent Gift, capital gifts, and endowment—was $5.3 million, the second highest amount Poly has ever received and the highest in a single year without an ongoing capital campaign.

As we have sought to engage more of you in our advancement efforts, participation rates in Poly giving have significantly risen to 63 percent among parents and 12 percent among alumni last year—the highest in the last five years.

Finally, you have stepped up to the plate in countless other ways. Poly parents and alumni donated thousands of hours of their time and expertise last year to organize events, receptions, meetings, and programs for the school, our students, and alumni.

We also owe a sustained round of applause to the volunteers who helped lead the Poly Fund, Jon Bon Jovi & Friends Benefit Concert, Poly’s Gala 2012, the Library Benefit, our Parents’ Association, our Alumni Board of Governors, and our Board of Trustees. Without their effort and vision, we would not be the school we are today.

In 2000, the new Nancy and Edwin Marks Center for Science & Technology provided Poly with a space that would support 21st century learning and teaching. The 2010 addition of a greenhouse on our Dyker Heights campus provided a curricular opportunity to round out Poly’s commitment to environmental sustainability. In 2011, Poly upgraded the Lower School science classroom, creating a space that excites and inspires our youngest learners. The Development Office promotes Poly’s mission by fostering meaningful relationships with our constituents through community engagement, special events, and fundraising. As a team, we support the entire Poly community through our parent and alumni relations efforts, as well as through campaigns that secure the resources necessary to sustain outstanding teaching, programming, and facilities. In turn, Poly enjoys the robust support of alumni, parents, grandparents, past parents, faculty, staff, and friends who generously contribute their money, expertise, and time.

ALUMNI RELATIONSAll Poly graduates and former Poly students are members of the Alumni Association. Through regional and local events, and in partnership with the Alumni Board of Governors, Poly engages over 5,000 alumni. We encourage our alumni to stay connected with Poly and with one another, underscoring our belief that our alumni are lifelong members of the Poly family.

PARENT RELATIONSPoly is committed to ensuring that our families enjoy a comprehensively positive experience at Poly. As such, our office serves as a resource for parents, whether they have general questions or are interested in taking advantage of a variety of volunteer opportunities. We also encourage active participation in our Parents’ Association, as well as myriad parent events held throughout the year. We pride ourselves on our strong community and are dedicated to meeting the needs and supporting the interests of our parent body.

FUNDRAISINGAs with all independent schools, Poly depends on the participation and generous contributions from all of our constituents. Through coordinated fundraising efforts such as the Poly Fund and special events, including Poly’s Gala and our Annual Library Benefit, we are able to bolster our programs, enhance our resources, and support our mission.

For Poly, meeting our educational mission with fiscal efficiency is an institutional priority. Through strategically conservative budgeting, we are able to direct 95 percent of our annual expenditures towards programs and teaching, teacher and staff salaries and benefits, financial aid, and our physical plant and depreciation. Only five percent of our expenditures are absorbed by administrative costs.
