Even for Modi, Shah is the to-go man — the one who can ruthless- ly turn the PM's popular appeal into bagfuls of votes. To w i n Modi's full trust hasn't been easy. Here's an example of Shah's com- mitment to the BJP's cause. His chopper was about to land in Pune when he received a distress call from a BJP candidate somewhere in the Konkan region. The candidate had turned into a bundle of nerves that evening after learning that Goa CM Manohar Parrikar would not be able to make it to the rally in his con- stituency. The BJP chief calmed him down. Though he had important party leaders waiting for him in Pune, Shah asked his pilot to fly to Konkan. He addressed the meeting there and got an insight too — the turnout convinced him that the decision to sever ties with Shiv Sena was the right one. On reaching Mumbai, he called a strate- gy session well past midnight. Shah's said to be a 24x7 politician who took the gamble of going it alone in Maharashtra and Haryana when even his well-wishers coun- selled against taking the risk just after the reverses in assem- bly bypolls. The 'audacity' paid off, and Shah was the toast of the party - a stun- ning transfor- mation for the man who had to leave Gujarat only a cou- ple of years ago on court orders. hile taking rounds in the engineroom, we should not simply pass

by the machines but stay there for sometime. At times, we may find an area oilysay, the generator. I wipe it and in thenext round if I see a black line emerging, then it indicates a leakage and we mustrectify it now, else it may become unman-ageable. We should monitor the perform-ance of a machine or a system and findout any flaws in it. For instance, if thefeed pump runs and shuts in 20 minutesnormally but today it is running for a longtime it indicates that either the pump isrunning dry. Either it has been vapourlocked or some leak might have devel-oped somewhere. To judge the normalbehaviour, I need to stay near themachine for a long period of time. A pumphas been running smoothly but it hasbeen making noise as there is definitelysomething wrong. I put my hand on theelectric motor but if it allows me to dothat, it is okay but if I need to pull back myhand immediately, it is indicating thatsomething is wrong , it is overheated andI must take corrective action.

On one occasion, the watchman calledme and said that some noise is comingfrom a particular cylinder head of themain engine. When I inserted my hand Ihad to withdraw it as I could hear thenoise pertaining to steam formationinside. This unit was overhauled in the port fromwhich we were departing and the coolingwater inlet valve wheel moved but valvedid not open. So, when you touch themachine you realize about its faults.Machines also have culinary preferences. The incinerator does not want simply thesludge. We also don’t want curd, we want“ lassi” ( churned, sugar and essenceadded) , in the similar manner the inciner-ator also likes “ lassi” and that is why wehave a churner fitted on ( homogenizer)and the sludge thus treated is liked by it.Many times, I explain to my students thereason behind the installation of Zincanodes. They get very amused by thisand the sleepy ones get up. To some others, I quip don’t you all fancywhite girls? Yes friends, we go to ship towork but in other words we go to takecare of it.

BJP says that if they cometo power, they will trans-form Mumbai into a worldclass city. The Shiv Sena,BJP in alliance with RPI isin power in the BMC where70 per cent of the civicbody’s budget is reportedlyspent on paying salaries tothe staff. The firsttask is toimprove cleanliness onMumbai roads with the par-ticipation of BMC staff.Subsequently, the road re-building work must com-mence on a war footingbasis supported by effec-tive ground level supervi-sion. Identify illegalBangladeshi immigrantsand begin their repatria-tion. Set up a desalinationplant at a suitable locationwith the assistance of for-eign experts. Strengthen

primary education, primaryhealth centers and skilldevelopment programsand minister must visitsuch places once everyweek. Set up training pro-grams for all employees ofCentral and state govern-ment offices, turn by turn,so that they become aware

    of the devel-

particular project is to beimplemented and what istheir role in facilitating it.Merely sanctioning a proj-ect and then taking no partin it should be the thing ofthe past. An army of 1000

young girls should beoffered training, just like wehad seen on television.Kurds are sending allfemale units to fight theISIS very competently. These girls will bedeployed to prevent terror-ism and anti-national activ-ities. Seeing them inaction, other kids will also

programme on thelines of Polio pro-gramme. Polio eradi-cation staff has done

an excellent job. The Parknext to CGS dispensary atKane Nagar is in a badshape and requires main-tenance same is the casewith garden located in sec-tor six. Parks in the citymust be properly main-tained and well illuminated.A message must be spreadthat Mumbai and India willdevelop through hard workand there is no substitutefor this.Road map for thenext government.

It is obviously good if thechildren study in schoolsand play rather than work-ing in hazardous situa-tions. However, India iscountry where large num-ber of poor people is livingand children need to workto support their parents. This situation is prevalentin agrarian societies for along period of time. Manyyoung boys and girls arevery competent and theycan combine work withstudies. If you visit villagessurrounding cities you willnotice young girls perform-ing some work and earningmoney. They also studywell. Until 15 years back, Imust confess that I wasunaware about the mari-juana shrub which wasgrowing outside our farm-house gate. A ten year oldboy had informed meabout it. The boy was verysmart, he could work in thefields, milk and ride thecows and buffaloes andeven managed to clearexaminations with goodmarks. When I was stayingin community centre CGScolony, the son of our“presswala” used to assist

his father but today he is astate civil service officer.Children must be prohibit-ed from working in facto-ries manufacturing crack-ers or work places wherethey may inhale poisonousand fibrous (hazardous)material. They can supporttheir parents until theybecome self-reliant. Thefilm Boot Polish whichrevolves around this sub-ject is worth watching. Inthe film Mother India youngBirju was quite bright to beable to help his mother andfrighten Sukhi lala”. If sani-tation, basic education, health care becomes avail-able then child exploitationwill automatically vanish. When I was studying in 7thstandard some of myschool mates used toreach school by walking adistance of 5-6 km bare-foot. They used to comefirst and second in theclass and not me.Obviously, they also musthave been working in thefields to assist their par-ents. Too much economicdisparity exists betweenthe rich and the poor whichneeds to be addressed.

40 per cent during 2013, from about 1.42 billion Swissfrancs at the end of the 2012, as per the data releasedby the country’s central banking authority Swiss NationalBank. In contrast, the money held in Swiss banks by theirforeign clients from across the world continued to declineand stood at a record low of 1.32 trillion Swiss francs(about $1.56 trillion or over Rs. 90 lakh crore) at the endof 2013. During 2012, the Indians’ money in Swiss bankshad fallen by over one-third to a record low level. The total Indian money held in Swiss banks included1.95 billion Swiss francs held directly by Indian individu-als and entities, and another 77.3 million Swiss francsthrough ‘fiduciaries’ or wealth managers at the end of2013. The data from Zurich-based SNB comes at a timewhen Switzerland is facing growing pressure from Indiaand many other countries to share foreign client details, while its own lawmakers are resisting such measures.India has also constituted a Special Investigation Team(SIT) to probe cases of alleged black money of Indians, including FUNDS stashed abroad in places likeSwitzerland. The funds, described by SNB as ‘liabilities’of Swiss banks or ‘amounts due to’ their clients, are theofficial figures disclosed by the Swiss authorities and donot indicate towards the quantum of the much-debatedalleged black money held by Indians in the safe havensof Switzerland. There are a total of 283 banks inSwitzerland, down from nearly 300 at the beginning of2013. This include two banks (UBS and Credit Suisse)classified as big banks, while there are 93 foreign-con-trolled banks operating in the country. Amid allegations ofIndians stashing huge amounts of illicit wealth abroad, including in Swiss banks, the Indian government hasbeen saying that it was making various efforts to bringback the unaccounted money is just a drama.

  • Business12 ubZ fnYyh] 20 vDVwcj ls 26 vDVwcj] 2014 At this point, beating FY14 looks difficult: N ChandrasekaranTata Consultancy Services(TCS) saw its STOCK fall8.7 per cent, wiping off Rs47,000 crore of investorwealth, as the companymissed expectations onthe revenue growth front.Managing Director andchief executive NChandrasekaran, however, says the September quar-ter was a good one. But,he cautions, performancein the third quarter will besoft. Edited excerpts:The market has reactedsharply to TCS' Septemberquarter numbers. Did youexpect such a reaction? No one can predict theMARKET. I could feel therewas a sense of disappoint-ment. I think the disap-pointment is because theMARKET always expectsyou to do well in the sec-ond quarter, as it is betterand stronger than the first. That's the only reason. I,too, feel we should haverecorded another $20 mil-lion in business. On an organic basis, thereseemed to be pressure inthe second quarter. Wasthis due to macro issues? In terms of performance, Ithink the second quarterwas really good. Thoughthe retail segment did well,it grew 5.6 per cent on con-stant CURRENCY terms;in the previous quarter, it

was seven per cent. Someramp-ups didn't happen. So, we lost a few milliondollars there. We expectedthe insurance space toremain soft or at the samelevel as in the first quarter. But it de-grew further. LatinAmerica should havegrown by a few million dol-lars, but went down by $5million; this was a surprise. When you take $5-6 millionin each of these cases, itamounts to a hit of about$20 million from two orthree areas.Analysts feel TCS is try-

    ing to tone down expec-

    tations.

No, we are not. If you lookat the miss, it's a smallgap. It's a difference of 40basis points, which trans-lates to less than $20 mil-lion. I am very happy withthe volume growth (6.1 percent). I have a few majorpoints for this quarter. I amhappy with our growth, interms of markets, services, geographies and businessunits.I am a bit disappointed thatwe missed on a few million

dollars of growth during aquarter that is essentially astrong one. But all indica-tions from customers con-tinue to be stable. For us,Europe has done well. Theperformance in the UK wassame as the company'sgrowth on constant CUR-RENCY terms. It's not thatthe quarter was bad; justthese three areas were aproblem. The revenuegrowth of 4.6 per cent isreally good. Will the per-formance in the Septemberquarter impact your growthtarget for FY15?I cannot make up for the$20 million in the nextquarter. The reason is thethird quarter (endingDecember) is essentially aweak one. It will be soft, aswe have furloughs in themanufacturing segment;also, the number of work-ing days is less. We do notgive an estimate. Itdepends on what parame-ters you take. At this point, beating FY14 looks diffi-cult. But all the three prob-lem areas are work inprogress. I did say theinsurance segment will besoft. I think by FY15, wewill see positive momen-tum in that vertical. We arepursuing some deals. Theretail segment did well; justthat some ramp-ups didn'thappen.

Gurgaon’s king topplesver since he became extra ordinarily successful,Kushal Pal Singh, 83, has been spending only thecooler part of the year (October to March) in India.

Not that the man who brought the concept of centrally air-conditional apartments to India would have had to face theheat and dust of the country if he did spend some time inGurgaon. Probably, the lifestyle his personal wealth canbuy just isn’t available in India. The fascinating legend ofhow KP bought up vast tracts of fertile soil in Delhi’s hin-terland to convert into acres of condominiums is fast los-ing its lustre. If it’s true that Rajiv Gandhi was drivingthrough Haryana in 1980 when he spotted the urbane KPsitting outside a village hut persuading farmers to sell theirholdings, it’s also true that the judicial system was sur-prised to see the injustices being done to aspiring home-owners by one-sided contracts they were signing withDLF.Here too serendipity had a big role to play. For when alesser builder was asked about contracts in which buyerspaid a penalty for late payments but builders are notaccountable for late delivery, the lawyer mumbled some-thing to the effect that DLF too had such contracts. Notamused, the judge asked to see the DLF paperwork. Andgave all builders, never mind if they were as iconic as DLF,a stern rap on the knuckles and told them never to do itagain. The humongous dimensions of buildings that DLF madean Indian reality — first Savitri cinema and then plonkedamid Gurgaon’s mustard fields — were awe-inspiring, butalso made ordinary people squirm. If Manhattan-style sky-lines could be created right here, right now, were Indianarchitectural traditions to be completely junked? But suchdoubts were swept aside by the waves of multinationalsand IIT-IIM professionals who took to the suburban utopialike ducks to water. Give me a mall, a gated communityand private security, they seemed to say, and I’ll adopt theAmerican work ethic. While the elite prospered at theirown level, Singh, son of a Bulan dshahar lawyer who stud-ied aeronautical engineering in the UK and served in thearmy accumulated personal wealth of $7.3 billion andstarted featuring in Forbes’ rich list. DLF, then India’slargest real estate developer, went public in 2007 andamply rewarded its shareholders. He continued to own 75per cent of the company, his holdings worth Rs 1,87,920crore at one stage. Nobody ever thought the dream wouldsour — and his own stake’s worth fall to Rs 14,700 crore. This week brought two bits of bad news. On Monday camethe Sebi ruling banning Singh and his family from access-ing the capital MARKET for three years.
