POLIO PROGRAM VICTORIES THIS YEAR
• India was officially certified as polio-free in March, making the entire South East Asia region (11 countries total) free of the virus
• 90% decrease in polio cases in Africa since 2013
• Only 6 cases in Nigeria in 2014, compared to 47 at this time in 2013.
• Strong outbreak response
• 0 polio cases in Syria since February 2014, after an aggressive response to a 2013 polio outbreak slowed the spread of the disease
• 3 million children vaccinated within Syria since October 2013
• 25 million children vaccinated across 7 countries in the Middle East between December 2013 and June 2014, the largest vaccination campaign ever in the region
• 6 polio cases in 2014 in the Horn of Africa, a region which last year had 217 cases
• 2 of the 3 poliovirus strains likely eradicated (no cases of WPV3 since November of 2012)
• In September 2014, a mullti-country polio vaccination campaign launched targeting 94 million children across 18 countries in West and Central Africa

KEY PRIORITIES FOR 2015
• Need for continued/renewed political commitment in Pakistan, Nigeria, Afghanistan,
Central Africa
• Elections in Nigeria
• New government in Afghanistan
• Uncertainty in Pakistan
• Continued support from GPEI donors
• Need for continued progress in reaching inaccessible children
