Once Upon a Time is an early primary unit that uses fairy tales to help teach the difference between fiction and non-fiction, rhyme, sight words, first sound fluency, and sentence structure. The fairy tales used are based on traditional tales and presented in a poem format. The poems are written for early readers using many first learned sight words. Rhyme is a powerful vehicle to help teach comprehension and vocabulary. There are six fairy tales presented in this unit: A Mermaid Wish, A Wolf's Tale (Little Red Riding Hood), The Three Little Pig Blues, The Gruff Family (Three Billy Goats Gruff), My Gingerbread Family, and Goldilocks, Goldilocks. Your students will enjoy the new twist on these old favorites. The children will enjoy coloring, cutting and pasting the beautiful illustrations that accompany each fairy tale. Here are some examples from this 115 page unit with complimenting center work:Fairy tales formatted for a poetry folder w/ illustrationsFairy tales in little book format for reading at home or library centerTeaching points for each taleSight word activity: Read, trace, find and circlePretend and Real activitySentence picture matchSentence scrambleFSF activitiesStory starters for center writingCloze worksheets using tale vocabulary and sight wordsBonus Fairy tale poem and activitiesThis product is offered in color and black and white.Over 115 pages.

My Gingerbread Family

A gingerbread family made of sugar and spice,Fresh from the oven, they smell so nice.

A gingerbread mom sweet as can be,I give her raison eyes so she can see.

She has candy heart buttons in a row,Around her neck is a frosting bow.

Jumping up from the hot pan,Is a cute, little gingerbread man.

He’s the dad with buttons of blue,And with him is a ginger baby too!

I made a house of cookies and candy,A happy home for my gingerbread family.
