January 2018 Presidents Message
I have been thinking about being your Club President again for a while now. Since no one ran against me, I hope you are on board to help with getting the many tasks done that we face in 2018. I looked at our by-laws and our activities throughout the year and came up with a plan to incorporate several small sub-committees to be involved with making this year fun for everyone and honor the bylaws that have been approved by you!
I spoke briefly about this at the December Board meeting with good input and consideration from the Board Members.
I feel many of you would be more willing to volunteer if you knew you were not going to “do-it-alone” and had a small group of Club members to bounce ideas off of or just depend on if you were not able to participate all the time. I have ap-proached a few folks already and they were very willing to help with this in con-cept and actions. I will be fine tuning the tasks that will cover the full year and running it past the Board of Directors at our January 9th meeting. Please know that you are all welcome and encouraged to attend the Board meetings! This is your Club and your ideas/input is what the Club needs to make it fun and satisfy-ing for everyone. I have heard it before that we run the Club like a business but make it fun. That’s the goal for me. I like to organize and make sure we are com-pleting the business piece with as much heart and intention as we are the fun piece. If you have concerns bring them to the Board meetings or a Board Direc-tor. Do not grumble and moan in the background and expect anything to get bet-ter. Use your words and work to help this Club meet all its goals.
I will discuss the committees and have sign-up sheets at the next few meetings. Here is the tentative list of committees: Auctions, Club House (Education/Hands on Classes), Club Show, Washington State/Puyallup Fair/Gem Faire, Juniors, Field Trips, Hospitality, Library, Historian, Sunshine, Advertising, Newsletter, Web submissions, Programs, Show and Tell themes etc.
Why this message at this time?
We need to have a clear direction that everyone can share a part of.
Then, there is the fact that we all love rocks and gems and all the fun and beauti-ful things we can do with them. That, Club Members, is why we do what we do here. Our common love for natures gifts to us.
I hope your New Year started out just as you hoped it would. See you soon…
Nancy LeMay, 2018 PVG&MC President.

HOLIDAY PARTY - 2017 HIGHLIGHTS
On December 9th we came together to celebrate the Holidays and recap our year with awards and presen-tations.
It’s a lot of work to make this party look so seamless, and sometimes it isn’t, but this year we did it again! The tables were dressed with cloths, candy, and lovely centerpieces. Kathy Brown and Jan Nix provided the decorations and made it special for all of the attendees.
I want to thank everyone for their time with set-up and take down but I didn’t make note of all that helped. If I leave somebody out I hurt feelings, so you know who you are and you are all extremely appreciated. I was asked to write this article after the fact and would have done a better job at recognizing everyone if I could have prepared for it. That being said, we ate good food and shared fun stories and times with our rock club friends.
Our ornament contest was replaced with a Lapidary Arts contest and went very well for our first at-tempt. The categories and winners were: JEWELRY; 1st place-Glen Ripper, 2nd place-Jan Nix and 3rd place-Bob Ballou. LAPIDARY; 1st place-Glen Ripper, 2nd place-Jan Nix and 3rd place-Dennis Batchelor. CREATIVE ARTS; 1st place-Jan Nix, 2nd place-Teresa Rodrick. KIDS/Juniors; 1st place Emily Hochstrasser.
The SHOW AND TELL AWARD was a tie between Larry Hoffman and Glen Ripper.
Man of the Year; Larry Hoffman Woman of the Year; Jennifer Barnstien
Thanks to the Tacoma Sportsman’s Club we had an additional drawing for two $25.00 gift certificates to their shooting range. Dennis Batchelor and Dick Diedrich were the lucky ones drawn from the hat as win-ners.
Oh yeah! We also had the swearing in ceremony, officiated by Jim Christian, for the 2018 Board of Direc-tors;
President: Nancy LeMay, Vice President: Glen Ripper, Secretary: Teresa Rodrick,
Treasurer: Larry Hoffman, Federation Director: John Huber, 1 year Director: Karen Lebeter,
2 year Director: (your name here) 1 year Trustee: Glenn Rodrick, 2 year Trustee: Tony Johnson
Now that we are all in our places with bright shiny faces, get ready for an awesome 2018!!!

GOLD & FISH RULES
There has been a bit discussion about the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife Gold and Fish Rules for Mineral Prospecting and Plac-er Mining pamphlet. Does it or does it not apply to rockhounding and if it does, how/when does it apply? Although these rules were primarily developed for gold prospecting in the areas adjacent to streams and lakes some of them do apply to rockhounding. The most common questions rockhounders have is -- when do you have to have a copy of the pamphlet with you? The answer has to do with “timing restrictions”. Page 10 of the pamphlet deals with “mineral pro-specting without timing restrictions” (see tables starting on page 16 of the pam-phlet) and in this case, you do not need to have a copy of the pamphlet with you. Page 13 of the pamphlet deals with “mineral prospection with timing re-strictions. In this case, you must have a copy of the pamphlet on the dig site, not one for each person as has been suggested. To print your own PDF copy, go to http://wdfw.wa.gov/licensing/mining/ and click on the gold and fish down-load on the right side of the page.
