The Garden Group learns grafting
The Brush up Your
Shakespeare Group
In safety and serenity the group
enjoyed its bloodthirsty journey
through Macbeth, inspired by
Leader Geoff’s insights.
The group also thoroughly
enjoyed the powerfully gory film
version of Macbeth on DVD as
directed by Roman Polanski.
Some have been, or plan to go,
to the pop-up Globe Theatre in
the city. Pictured: Fay, Geoff,
Pam and Margaret.
Everyone gained a lot of knowledge about propagation. We took home three trays of the cuttings we did ourselves. Once they strike, we will share all the plants with the garden group members. We might do this again ourselves next year.
Pictured: Helen, Mazi, Rosa and Juanita with Cathy at Holts Lane Nursery.
Thanks Wendy for the photo.
At the Curios
November meeting Participants shared stories about their
china, crystal and pottery. It was good
to get out our treasures and to be
reminded of their significance.
Pictured: Helen, Juanita, Ellie, Marg
and Sheila.
Thanks Helen for the photo.

Who’s Who in U3A: Ian and Christine Gordon
Christine:
I grew up with a sister and brother in the new suburb of Rosanna. My great, great, great grandparents arrived in early Melbourne from Britain, Ireland and Singapore and I inherited a love for music, history, travel, drawing and writing. I enjoyed school and played recorder at competitions. In High school I veered toward Science and my sister Robyn to Art. She then studied Photography.
I had four happy years at La Trobe University doing Chemistry, Biochemistry and Dip Ed. My prac. partner was Jill and in third year I went out with Ian. We married after Dip Ed in 1974. The Education Department sent us to a new, small High School at Melton. After two years I left and had our daughter, then our son three years later.
When our daughter was four we went on a two month holiday to the USA, and saw the Grand Canyon, Disneyworld and Honolulu. In 1985, when our son was four, we spent a week in Canton, China.
In 1984 we joined a new church and helped to build the Melton Christian College.
I was very glad to see the opening of the first building and I volunteered as an Aid for eight years. I studied for a Primary Dip Ed and worked in remedial reading.
In 1992, I studied Professional Writing and Editing at V.U.T. and I wrote my ancestors’ journey as they followed gold strikes in Victoria as a novel “Slender Strands”.
In 1993, we moved and I joined the worship team in the new Apostolic Church in Bacchus Marsh. Ian worked at the new campus of Bacchus Marsh High and the winter after he retired we went to Britain and Germany sightseeing and took a ton of photographs.
Our daughter studied youth work at R.M.I.T and worked in this area as a volunteer after she married. Our son always loved board games, puzzles and computers. He studied for a degree in Commerce and Computers at La Trobe University. He worked in the computer industry for many years and now has a business, two Toyland shops.
I am enjoying fun and learning at U3A in Art, Singing, Science and Games.

Who’s Who in U3A Ian and Christine Gordon
Ian
I grew up in Coburg with my parents and older brother, attending the Coburg West Primary School and Moreland High School.
Some of my life’s highlights were:
Earning my Queen’s Scout Badge,
Qualifying for BSc and Dip Ed at La Trobe Uni (it was only three years old when I started and we have just been back for the 50
th
anniversary).
Finding my lifelong partner, Christine, getting engaged, married, watching the birth of our two children and walking down the aisle with my daughter at her wedding.
Seeing my wife’s book ‘Slender Strands’ in print. Attending our son’s wedding.
There are too many highlights to list of my Secondary Teaching career, from my apprenticeship at Brunswick Girls High School and Ballarat High, pioneering Melton High and teaching at Bacchus Marsh High School.
Theoretically, I now have more time to play with our three grandchildren since retiring in 2005
Music and Theatre:
I played a piano solo, Beethoven’s Sonata in C sharp minor in the Coburg Town Hall in 1968.
I was the assistant ‘roady’ for the Victorian State Orchestra, helping my brother with the sound gear for a few years.
I grew up on live theatre. My Uncle worked at the Comedy Theatre so I was able to see many productions there, sometimes from back stage, and some at Her Majesty’s Theatre.
Church life:
I was involved with Youth For Christ in my teen years and was on the Board of Management of a Presbyterian Church in West Brunswick.
I was the Vice President of the La Trobe Uni Christian Fellowship.
I became a Deacon in the Melton Baptist Church and helped run a youth group.
At Melton Christian Fellowship, I was a youth leader, preached occasionally and helped with the audio. We helped to establish Melton Christian College and I was on the school Council as Secretary for the first decade.
At Bacchus Marsh Life Church, I have been an Elder, a missionary to Vanuatu and a Homegroup leader.
U3A
When the “games day” was going to be run in our house, I thought it would be wise to become a member of U3A. Since joining, I have also become involved with the Science group, the Play Reading group, the Singing Group and have enjoyed being on some of the excursions with the Art group.
I continue my hobbies of photography and travelling with my wife.
