Applying to sit a PMI examination• To apply to take the PMP you have to become a member of PMI

• As part of your application you will need to enter details of your project management experience. To do this we suggest the following process:

• Review your CV and make sure that all entries are up to date

• For each role, identify the projects that you managed or participated in, and define what your contribution was

• Identify a referee for each and every project including name, position, email and contact phone number. If it has been some time since the project was undertaken then people may have moved on – use www.linkedin.com to find old colleagues

• Once you have a comprehensive list of projects break these down into how much time you spent in each PMI project phase – beware, this can take longer than it looks!

• Remember PMI does audit the applications, so be honest about your experience

The Benefits of PMI® Certification • PMI’s certification and credentials are distinguished by their global

development and application, which makes them transferable across industries and geographic borders

• PMP® is different to PRINCE2® in that it provides techniques and activities to manage the project i.e. how to be a project manager, whereas PRINCE2® provides the structure and processes that the project manager should use for form and govern the project

• Whilst the PMP® is not as well known in the UK as the PRINCE2® qualification, it is highly respected and it is a useful differentiating factor for project managers who want to evidence their ability

• For example, holders of the PMP credential have regularly commanded higher salaries than non-credentialed individuals (PMI 6th global salary survey showed PMP® qualified individuals were paid 10% more than individuals without the qualification)

• PMP® consistently appears in the top ten U.S. qualifications that enhance individual career prospects

What do people say about the course?

• “It was great to be able to dig deeper into how to manage the project and I picked up lots of tips, especially in how to assess the progress of my project.”

• “PMP is very different to PRINCE2 so I did have to learn some new terms but I work with a lot of international teams and they refer to the project charter a lot so it was good to finally understand where they were coming from”

• “I was looking for the next step. I have PRINCE2 and MSP but I wanted to know more about the technical aspects of project management. It was a tough course, lots to learn in the week which makes it intensive but it was definitely worth it. I feel like a ‘proper’ project manager now.”

• “A tough week, so much information to get in my head but I liked the pace, and I felt that everything we did was relevant to my projects and how I can tackle some of the more difficult aspects of planning and estimating.”

• “Some of the terminology was American, especially the contract terms but it still made sense and helped me get a deeper understanding of how to manage my international suppliers.”
