Activating the License
On purchasing PostMaster Enterprise, you receive a personal ized l icense
fi le to activate the instal lation. The l icense fi le is sent via e-mail or on a
floppy disk and is typical ly named l icense..
Licensing of PostMaster Enterprise is based on Cl ient Access Licenses
(CALs) purchased for a single server instal lation.
Al l PostMaster Enterprise modules l ike PME-Mai l , PME-Web and PME-
Calendar have their individual CAL count. Plug-ins to modules l ike
AntiVirus AttachmentControl and AntiSpam has the same CAL as their
parent module.
For example, a 25-user PME-Mai l l icense enables you to add and activate
up to 25 users in PME-Mai l . A 12-user PME-Web l icense enables you to add
and activate up to 12 users in PME-Web.
General ly, al l the modules in PostMaster Enterprise have the same CAL.
However, technical ly i t is possible to have different CALs for different
modules.
To activate your l icense:
1. Locate the fi le named l icense (with no extensions) in the directory
where PostMaster Enterprise has been instal led.
The default path is C:\Program Files\QLC\.
2. Rename the fi le, l icense, from the C:\Program Fi les\QLC\ to

How PostMaster Enterprise Components Work
This section gives a brief idea on the internal working of the various
modules and plug-ins of the PostMaster Enterprise suite.
For ease of understanding the section is further categorized as below:
How PME-Mai l Works
How PME-Web Works
How PME-Calendar Works
How AntiVirus For PME-Mai l Works
How AntiSpam For PME-Mai l Works

How PME-Mail Works
When users send e-mail , their e-mail cl ient contacts the SMTP server bui lt
into PME-Mai l , which accepts the message for del ivery. If the message is
for a local user, i t is del ivered instantly to that user's mai lbox. If not,
PME-Mai l recognizes that the message is to be sent via the Internet and
queues it in the Outbox for dispatch during the next mai l transfer.
The next time PME-Mai l connects to the Internet (using your ISP account),
i t does the fol lowing:
Sends out al l the spooled messages from its Outbox
Downloads inbound e-mail from al l the mai lboxes configured
Re-distributes incoming e-mail into local mai lboxes
The distribution of local mai ls is done on the basis of email address. You
need to have registered a domain and your users need to have been given
personal ized email -ids in the format [email protected].
For example, i f you have registered the domain PostMaster
Enterprise.co.in, users would have personal ized IDs of the form
mailto:john@PostMaster Enterprise.co.in , mai lto:dj@PostMaster
Enterprise.co.in, mai lto:jane@PostMaster Enterprise.co.in and so on.
Based on the email -id, PostMaster Enterprise wi l l f ind out to which
account the mai l is to be del ivered.
The mail upload and download process has intel l igence built into it. Whi le
uploading or downloading the mails size restrictions could be set. This wi l l
ensure that during the peak hours your mai l transfer is not hampered by
large size mai ls.
The distribution process is where magic happens in PME-Mai l . It is
during the distribution process that i t is checked whether a particular user
has rights to receive the mai l(s). Mai ls received for particular email -ids
can be forwarded to any other pre-defined email-ids. Robot service can be
invoked to take automated action based on header / content of the mai l .
Actions related to PME-To-PostMaster Enterprise Del ivery noti fication also
comes into play during the distribution process.
It is during the distribution process that the plug-ins AntiVirus for PME-
Mai l and AntiSpam for PME-Mai l are invoked. Both the virus-scanning and
the spam-detection engine are bui lt into PME-Mai l . This exceptional
integration enables a superior performance.
Del ivery of the mai l to users' mai lbox also has some smart capabi l i t ies.
User Level Robot Service, i f enabled for the user, can take automated
action based on the based on header / content of the mai l . Auto -response
mechanism, i f enabled, is also activated at the time of local del ivery.

How PME-Web Works
When users want to browse the net, they configure their browsers to
connect to the Internet via the PME-Web. The PME-Web receives requests
from the browser, checks it and forwards the same request to the server
over the Internet. It then waits for a response from the Internet s erver.
On getting a response from the server, the PME-Web intel l igently forwards
this to the original requester. PME-Web acts as a go between the users
with the browsers and the Internet. It can do this for unl imited number of
users. Obviously, i f many users are browsing at the same time then the
Internet bandwidth is shared across al l of them making the request -
response time from the servers slower.
Since the users wil l always go through PME-Web, PME-Web can be
configured to do a few smart things:
Store (cache) commonly used static web pages in the local
memory to enable faster access
Block access to pre-defined sites OR al low access only to pre-
defined sites
Block fi le download based on the fi lename OR al low download
only of predefined fi les
Block advert isement banners to reduce bandwidth uti l ized by
downloading such images

How AntiVirus For PME-Mail Works
In AntiVirus for PME-Mai l , the scanning process is tightly integrated with
the process of sending / receiving mails (local / remote). For outgoing or
internal mai ls, the mai ls are scanned as soon as the SMTP server receives
them. For incoming mails, the mai ls are scanned as soon as the POP3
cl ient downloads them. In effect the scanning engine is in -bui lt into the
SMTP server / POP3 cl ient. It is also possible to scan internal mai ls. No
other scanning engine can offer this level of integration.
A major USP of AntiVirus for PME-Mai l is the fact that in case of vi rus
detection, only the infected part is deleted. General ly, the user wi l l
receive the mai l minus the infected attachment. Most anti -virus software
for mai l servers delete or block the entire. This means that recipient does
not receive the mai l at al l .
A mai l could contain many parts. Some parts of the mai l are text, some
are html and sti l l other is attachments (binary fi les, zips, exes, images
etc). When PME-Mai l receives a mai l , the AntiVirus engine is invoked. The
AntiVirus engine breaks the mails into various parts.
Once the various attachments are individually avai lable, each fi le is
checked with the Attachment Control l ist. If an attachment matches with
the fi le name or fi le type mentioned in the Attachment Control l ist, the
said attachment is deleted. Optional ly, Attachment Control can also detect
fi le within zip fi les. If a l isted attachment is found in a zip fi le, the zip fi le
wi l l be deleted.
After the Attachment Control process, each part is scanned for virus. On
detecting a virus, actions carried out are based on scan settings:
If the scan setting is set to clean the attachment, AntiVirus for
PME-Mai l wi l l try to clean the attachment.
If the scan setting is set to clean the attachment, AntiVirus for
PME-Mai l wi l l delete only the infected attachment (without
attempting to clean i t), rest of the mai l passes through.
If the scan setting is set to quarantine the mail , then AntiVirus
for PME-Mai l re-directs the mai l to a separate Quarantine Area
within the PostMaster Enterprise folders. In this option the user
wi l l not receive the original message.
Provision is also made for the situation where cleaning an attachment of a
virus fai ls.
If the disinfect fai ls setting is set to clean the attachment,
AntiVirus for PME-Mai l wil l delete only the infected attachment
(without attempting to clean it), rest of the mai l passes through.

If the disinfect fai ls setting is set to quarantine the mail , then
AntiVirus for PME-Mai l re-direct the mai l to a separate
Quarantine Area within the PostMaster Enterprise folders. In this
option the user wi l l not receive the original message.
For any mail where attachment/s were cleaned or deleted and forwarded
to the recipients, AntiVirus for PME-Mai l wil l insert a Scan Report
indicating the action taken. Optional ly AntiVirus for PME-Mai l can insert
Scan Report for vi rus free mai ls. AntiVirus for PME-Mai l can also generate
Alert Mai l , which is a separate mai l that is sent out to the admin, sender,
recipient or any other user-defined email/s as configured.

How AntiSpam For PME-Mail Works
AntiSpam for PME-Mai l service uses a variety of techniques to identi fy and
detect Spam (unsol icited / junk mail) from legitimate mai l intended for
you. Unl ike mal icious / hosti le content (viruses), Spam is more difficult to
classify and therefore to identi fy. Hence, Anti -Spam works through
tagging the mails as "Spam" rather than deleting.
The Anti-Spam system on PostMaster Enterprise server scans al l messages
that are received from external (non-PostMaster Enterprise) users either
via SMTP Server or downloaded via POP3 cl ient. Every message that is
suspected of being unsol icited, gets "tagged" as "Spam". A tag is simply
an un-intrusive phrase that gets inserted into the header (or subject l ine)
of an e-mail message, e.g. SPAM. This phrase can then be used by your
email cl ient to automatical ly fi l ter these messages and fi le i t away into a
"junk" folder. Thus el iminating the offensive and distracting clutter in
your Inbox.
The AntiSpam Service can protect you from Spam Mai ls even before they
mails come in (either via POP3 cl ient downloads / mai ls received via the
SMTP server) to the system. Download settings may be appl ied to e -mail
that you are sure is Spam. This ensures that such messages are not even
received into the system, saving your Internet bandwidth. In case of mai l
coming in via SMTP, the mai l is directly rejected. In case of POP3
downloads, you can use the Download Fi l ters to either delete such e -mail
from the POP3 server or leave it on the POP3 server. In case, the mai l
matches multiple fi l ter rules, the action taken on the mai l (delete from
server or leave on server) depends on the first rule matched.
The AntiSpam engine works only on mails received from remote users
(either via POP3 cl ient downloads / the SMTP server). For incoming mails,
PostMaster Enterprise AntiVirus scans the mails as soon as the SMTP
Server / POP3 cl ient receives them. Immediately after, the anti -virus
scanning, the PostMaster Enterprise AntiSpam engine is invoked. In effect
the AntiSpam engine is in-bui lt into the SMTP server / POP3 cl ient.
The AntiSpam engine starts the process of identi fying spam or non -spam
according to the fol lowing steps:
If enabled, then message/s received from domains configured in
PostMaster Enterprise are tagged as non-spam. Al l other
messages fol low the steps further.
If enabled, then al l message/s received from addresses that are
part of the Global address book are tagged as non-spam. Al l
other messages fol low the steps further.
You can specify custom fi l ters on the Mai l Fi l ters screen, in the
Mai l Fi l ters section. If enabled, f i l tering is based on the header
-
PostMaster Enterprise Manual For Administrators 2-
17
settings you specify. Messages satisfying any one of the criteria
set as header settings are tagged as spam or non -spam. Al l other
messages fol low the steps further.
If enabled, then e-mail received from addresses that are part of
the users personal address book are tagged as non -spam for
that user only. If the mai l contains multiple recipients for whom
AntiSpam has not yet determined the AntiSpam tag, the process
is carried further. For other messages, the process is carried
further.
Users can also specify certain user level fi l ters on the WebMail
interface. Again, If enabled, fi l tering is based on the header
settings specified. The messages are accordingly tagged as spam
or non-spam for the user only. If the mai l contains multiple
recipients for whom AntiSpam has not yet determined the
AntiSpam tag, the process is carried further. For other messages,
the process is carried further.
If enabled, then al l the URLs within the mai ls are extracted and
checked against the Bad URL Database. If any match is found,
the message is tagged as spam. For other messages, the process
is carried further.
If enabled, the email address mentioned in From of the mai l
header is extracted and checked against the Bad Sender
Database. If any match i s found, the message is tagged as spam.
For other messages, the process is carried further.
Messages not yet tagged as spam or non-spam (for all the
users), undergo the Spam Detection process, i f enabled. In this
process, words in the e-mail are compared with the words that
are part of the AntiSpam engine database (SpamDefs). Based on
this, the mai l (for the balance users) wi l l be tagged as Spam or
NoSpam.
For any of the above steps, i f messages are marked as spam, a header as
given below is inserted in the mai l
"X-PME-Classification: NoSpam"
or
"X-PME-Classification: spam"
The PostMaster Enterprise AntiSpam team is constantly working to find
out the latest trends in spam by keeping itself updated through various
RBLs (Real-time Black Lists) and spam archives. Nowadays, spam has
started originating from new URLs. The AntiSpam engine database is
constantly updated with this information, which it uses for spam

a special SMTP-SMS gateway that in turn wi l l forward the mail as an
SMS to the specified number. Effective PostMaster Enterprise v6.0.29,
SendSMS has been introduced as one of the actions in Robot Service.
Gateways
Gateway enables Lotus or Exchange based networks (which basical ly do
not have the capabi l i ty to download mails from POP3 accounts) to
access mai l using an ISP based POP3 mail account(s).
Sync User Plug-in
The Sync User Plug-in enables synchronization among Lotus Notes or
Exchange user l ist on the gateway machine and PostMaster Enterprise
user l ist. When the PostMaster Enterprise SyncUsers process is invoked
the fol lowing activity takes place: Al l services and mail transfer are
temporari ly stopped, PostMaster Enterp rise SyncUsers component
connects to the LDAP Server on the Gateway Machine, request is made
for al l the email addresses in the LDAP database for the domain
specified, the l ist of email address got from the LDAP Server is
compared with the l ist of users mapped to the Gateway and the user for
the PostMaster Enterprise Gateway is updated accordingly.
PostMaster Enterprise Mail Moderation
PostMaster Enterprise Mai l Moderation module aims providing a faci l i ty
for moderating the flow of mai ls. Mai l moderation can be done for both
incoming and outgoing mails. The basic idea of Mai l Moderation is to
block selected mails (that require moderation based on email addresses
contained in the mai l) at the server level ti l l the designated
moderator(s) accept or reject the mai ls.

Features of PostMaster Enterprise - PME-Web
PostMaster Enterprise can be set up to share the Internet using proxy
services. It provides you with faci l i ty to al low or deny rights to your users
to browse, use FTP etc. The PME-Web specific features include:
Support for all major protocols
PME-Web supports HTTP (normal web browsing), FTP (transferring fi les
over Internet), SOCKS (use of proprietary protocol by certain software)
and RAV (Real Audio Video), which are widely used over the Internet.
Advanced settings are avai lable for each of these proxy servers to
enable you fine-tune PostMaster Enterprise performance.
Access Control Lists
Access control rules restrict access to services such as HTTP Proxy, FTP
Proxy, SOCKS Proxy, RAV Proxy and TPM. This provides a first level
firewal l for security from hackers and/or crackers.
TCP/IP Port Mapping
PME-Web supports TCP/IP Port Mapping, which enables you to perform
basic Network Address Translation and Port Address Translation. Al l TCP
Proxy Server are completely configurable l ike any other PostMaster
Enterprise server. These come with standard features l ike Start, Stop,
Logs and ACL.
Caching
PME-Web stores frequently accessed static web pages on the PostMaster
Enterprise computer. This enables faster access of these web pages by
the users connected to the PostMaster Enterprise computer.
User based authentication
You may not want to provide al l users in your company with Internet
access. In such cases, you can set up the proxy service to al low only
val id users to access the Internet based on password authentication.
User based authentication is also the preferred mechanism when you
want to track the internet usage of users within your organization. Use
of Alternative Authentication Mechanisms does not faci l i tate a tracking
of user based internet usage.
Alternative Authentication Mechanisms
Primari ly, PME-Web uses the normal user-name / password mechanism
for HTTP Proxy. Using user-name / password mechanism enables you to
retain maximum control over users who are accessing Internet using
PME-Web. PME-Web also supports EasyAuth and CacheAuth mechanisms.
Using EasyAuth mechanism, the PostMaster Enterprise HTTP Proxy, wi l l
not ask for user name / password for any HTTP requests. Al l the users

are presumed to be logged in as admin and the logs wi l l show activit ies
as admin. During EasyAuth the requesting IP Address assumes
significance. While using CacheAuth mechanism, the PostMaster
Enterprise HTTP Proxy, wi l l ask for user name / password only for the
first HTTP requests coming from a machine. After the first request, the
PostMaster Enterprise HTTP Proxy, wi l l NOT ask for user name /
password for any other HTTP requests coming from a machine ti l l the
next PostMaster Enterprise re-start. CacheAuth mechanism is useful to
overcome issues related to Windows Update.
Group / User level controls
The users defined in PostMaster Enterprise can be optional ly mapped to
a Group. Users belonging to a particular group inherit properties of that
group. Users can belong to different groups in each PostMaster
Enterprise module. It is also possible that a user may not belong to any
Group. The properties that a user can inherit from the group include:
Protocol Control, Data Transfer Control, Date Based Access, Time Based
Access.
User-Level Protocol Control
PME-Web al lows you to configure which proxy services use r(s) / group
of users can use. PME-Web can be configured to selectively al low / deny
the usage of HTTP Proxy, FTP Proxy and SOCKS Proxy.
User-Level Data Transfer Control
PostMaster Enterprise enables you to configure the maximum data
transfer per day for a user. Once the maximum data transfer l imit is
reached by the user, the user is no longer able to use PME-Web for the
day.
User level logging
In addition to system logs, use / access of the Internet can be
monitored through comprehensive user-level logs. The user-level logs
are avai lable for each proxy server. Log rotation is also provided for
user-level logging.
Dial-on-demand access
If your organization does not have a permanent connection, a dial -up
connection can be configured for use. When a user on the LAN wants to
connect to the Internet, this dial up connection initiates on its own
al lowing the user to surf the Internet.
Site filtering
PME-Web can be set up to block access to admin defined sites or al low
access only to admin defined sites. Thus, you can ensure that your

Features of PME - AntiVirus for PME-Mail
In AntiVirus for PME-Mai l , the scanning process is tightly integrated with
the process of sending / receiving mails (local / remote). For outgoing or
internal mai ls, the mai ls are scanned as soon as the SMTP server receives
them. For incoming mails, the mai ls are scanned as soon as the POP3
cl ient downloads them. In effect the scanning engine is in -bui lt into the
SMTP server / POP3 cl ient. Now, it is possible to even scan the internal
mai ls. No other scanning engine can offer this level of integration.
The features of the AntiVirus service include:
Exceptional Integration
The virus-scanning engine is bui lt into the SMTP, POP3 and IMAP
servers enabl ing very tight integration with the mai l ing system.
Messages are scanned as the SMTP / IMAP servers or the POP3
cl ient receives them.
Scan Options
The AntiVirus service has multiple scanning options, which can be
customized separately for incoming e-mail , outgoing e-mail or
internal e-mail . On detecting a virus, you have total control on
the type of action to be taken.
Attachment Cleaning / Deletion & Mail Quarantine
As much as possible the efforts of the AntiVirus services wi l l be
to clean the suspect or infected attachment . If the cleaning fai ls
then the suspect or infected attachment is deleted and the rest
of the mai l is forwarded to the recipients.
Alerts Through E-mail
The AntiVirus service provides the facil i ty of sending automatic
alerts, when it detects a virus-infected message, to any or al l of
the fol lowing: administrator, sender, recipient, or any other user.
Auto Download of Virus Data Files
The AntiVirus service can be set up to automatical ly update the
virus definitions database through the smart update faci l i t y.
Attachment Control
The attachment control component of the AntiVirus service
checks the mai ls for black-l isted attachments, i f found the said
attachments are deleted with relevant message being inserted in
the mai l . The AntiVirus service has a global at tachment control
l ist in addition to a separate l ist for Outgoing, Incoming and
Internal mai ls.

Features of PME - AntiSpam for PME-Mail
Thus el iminating the offensive and distracting clutter in
your Inbox.
The AntiSpam Service can protect you from Spam Mai ls even bef ore they
mails come in (either via POP3 cl ient downloads / mai ls received via the
SMTP server) to the system.
In case, the mai l
matches multiple fi l ter rules, the action taken on the mail (delete from
server or leave on server) depends on the first rule matched.
The AntiSpam engine works only on mails received from remote users
(either via POP3 cl ient downloads / the SMTP server). F or incoming mails,
PostMaster Enterprise AntiVirus scans the mails as soon as the SMTP
Server / POP3 cl ient receives them. Immediately after, the anti -virus
scanning, the PostMaster Enterprise AntiSpam engine is invoked. In effect
the AntiSpam engine is in-bui lt into the SMTP server / POP3 cl ient.
