History

In 1930 Clyde Tombaugh was searching for a ninth planet as part of a project at Lowell Observatory. On February 18, 1930, Tombaugh discovered a possible moving object on photographic plates taken on January 23 and January 29 of that year. A lesser-quality photograph taken on January 20 helped confirm the movement. After the observatory obtained further confirmatory photographs, news of the discovery was telegraphed to the Harvard College Observatory on March 13, 1930. Pluto would later be found on photographs dating back to March 19, 1915.

IAU-Who Are They?

International Astronomical Union The IAU unites different astronomical societies from around the world.

They’re made up of astronomers and scientists from different nations.

They also have the internationally recognized authority for assigning designations for celestial bodies (stars, planets, asteroids, etc.)

“Dwarf Planet”

A "dwarf planet" is a celestial body that (a) is in orbit around the Sun, (b) has sufficient mass for its self-gravity to overcome rigid body forces so that it assumes a hydrostatic equilibrium

(nearly round) shape, (c) has not cleared the neighborhood around its

orbit, and (d) is not a satellite.
