INTRODUCTIONIn the year 1987, Shri Puran Chandra Gupta Smarak Trust was established in the memory of Late Shri Puran Chandra Gupta, the Founder of Dainik Jagran Newspaper. His Holiness Late Shri Swami Ram, Spiritual Head of the Trust emphasized to establish a VIDYANIKETAN in Kanpur to provide best possible education synthesizing the Indian culture, heritage, and traditions with modern education technology.

The campus is thoughtfully planned and incorporates a futuristic design. It offers the perfect setting for physical well-being and harmonious development of the mind and spirit. Its gardens and playfields provide a pleasing sight and a suitable atmosphere for a sound mind in a sound body.

On a six-acre plot in Barra, Kanpur, the two interconnected three-storeyed school buildings cater well to the requirements of a fully developed 10+2 school. Equipped with large and airy classrooms, audiovisual centre, libraries, learning resource centres, science and computer labs, it also has a hostel facility for boys.

CURRICULUMPuranchandra Vidyaniketan, a co-educational English medium school is affiliated to CBSE, New Delhi for 10+2 stage of Education in Science & Commerce streams. The education system is designed to achieve a balance between academic and curricular activities, which will enable students to compete successfully at all levels. The curriculum is regularly updated keeping in mind the needs and demands of the changing society.

The whole school is divided into four functional areas from Nursery to Class XII. All through the school the medium of instruction is ENGLISH.At the Nursery stage prior to Class I the focus of learning will be on observation, identification, listening, singing, dance, cultivation of motor functions that revolve around the preparation of basic 3R's for academic skills.

The school urges parents to keep constant communication to help

monitor the growth and development of the student. Parent teacher

meetings are held about four times a year so that the parents can discuss

their wards progress with the subject teachers. Apart from this, the Class

Teachers, the Coordinators and in-charges of the Nursery, Primary,

Middle and Senior sections apart from the Head of Academics and Vice

Principal are available for interaction with the parents. Parents are

encouraged to discuss their wards education and well being with the

Principal at the appointed times.

The school strives to develop the finer human sensitivity and appreciation of aesthetics through Art and Music. It provides a lot of scope for the students to take up Art through various media. Our Art and Craft teachers give each student lessons in different techniques and styles. Four large halls are exclusively set aside as art and craft areas.For Music and Dance about six teachers continuously help to make each student appreciate the Indian Classical Music and learn it. A large area with spacious rooms is developed in the school building itself for vocal and instrumental music, dance and a lecture room.As the school is an active member of the SPIC MACAY (Society for the promotion of Indian Classical Music and Culture Amongst Youth), renowned artists and dancers visit the school regularly and perform various forms of these performing arts and music for the students.

The school aims at all round development of the student's personality. It focuses on the activities that harmonize the body and the mind. The students participate in various games and sports throughout the year. Besides this many students reach early or stay back after school to play or participate in sports coaching. The events are organized house wise through which they are brought up to meet challenges. All participants and those who excel are awarded prizes and certificates in the intra and inter school competitions that are an integral part of the School calendar. To help the students to attain a sound physique, a new gymnasium is setup in the school.

Information & Communication Technology is an essential part of the curriculum and is introduced from class I level. The four computer labs –for primary, middle and senior section are equipped with TFT’s & networking. The Foundation of Information Technology is a compulsory subject for class IX/X students. Class XI/XII students pursue Computer Science or Informatics Practices as an elective subject. Projects are assigned on relevant topics to enhance the learning. PCVN ICT Society (PITS) organises the popular IT related annual Carnival for various schools of UP. Such competitions keep them abreast with latest technological developments.

The school has constructed a new four storied block in the campus with the singular purpose to enhance the quality of Teaching Learning Process. All the learning resources, traditional as well as modern are kept in a class specific Learning Resource Centre. These halls are equipped with state of Art equipments such as Promethean Board, projectors and Computers. The teachers are trained in the use of such technology to augment their traditional pupil specific classroom teaching.Being spacious these halls allow flexible seating to make group activities more effective for teaching all subjects.

Children are encouraged to express their views through creative writing. We publish six issues of the School Newsletter - EXPOSURE and DIFFERENT STROKES the Annual Profile, and the Annual Chronicle – JAGRITI during each academic session. They get ample opportunity to write on certain topics for Wall Magazine – UNMESH and the IMPRESSION boards that are used for Inter House competitions for creative writing on thought provoking topics.

The students are divided into four Houses called Blue Birds, Golden Wings, Green Leaves and Red Roses thus providing opportunities for healthy competition in sports and other activities. Each house is in charge of a House Master/Mistress, who is responsible for grooming the students with the help of their house teachers and house prefects. The system encourages a sense of teamwork and community responsibility.

Students are sent on trekking and cycling expeditions and other organized trips with teachers as escorts regularly to give them exposure to outer world. Places usually visited by younger age group students include Allen Forest, Moti-Jheel, Bird Sanctuary at Nawabganj, Ganga Ghat, Bithoor, Parag Dairy, Dainik Jagran Press, Tanneries, Kannauj, Kalpi Fort, Lucknow etc. Our middle school and senior school students are encouraged to travel by train with/without escorts. These students are often sent out on Trekking expeditions to places like Gangotri, Kedarnath, Badrinath, Shimla Hills etc. A few students are sent regularly to attend the Adventure Courses at Nehru Institute of Mountaineering, Uttarkashi and National Adventure Institute, Panchmarhi. Such activities boost their confidence and make them learn to tackle the real world.

Bharat Scouts and Girl Guides programme is organized throughout the year for the students of classes VI to VIII. In this, they undergo training for various activities like tent pitching, cooking, first aid, scout laws etc. They all enjoy the Annual Endurance camp that is usually held in the school.

The school has a squad of 50 NCC Cadets of the junior division under the supervision of the 59 Battalion of NCC. The students of the NCC troops take part in parades and instructional classes and are regular attendants of Annual Training Camps and weapon training sessions held at the 59 UP NCC Battalion. They also help the staff members to efficiently organize and manage the various school functions.

I.A.Y.P. presents young people with an individual challenge through

balanced non-competitive voluntary activities. Young people between

the age of 14 and 25 are encouraged to develop personal qualities of

self-reliance, perseverance and responsibility, which get them

international recognition. It prepares the students to perfect themselves

in different areas like service, adventure, skill and interest to aspire for

gold, silver and bronze awards.

Over the years, this has helped to create a closer international

cooperation arising directly from individual effort in many nations. Our

school is one of the prestigious members of this award programme.

The school gives various responsibilities to the students at

different levels to encourage their leadership traits. Class

monitors, games captains, Activity Secretaries and monitors

from class XI are appointed to bring out their talent.

All these culminate in a student's opportunity to be appointed

as the House Prefect, House Captain, School Prefect,

Headboy or Headgirl. The school expects the Prefectorial

body to contribute to the discipline and development of the

school by being role models to the other students in excellence

and conduct.

Students are given career guidance and counselling to expose

them to the vast range of careers open to them. Guest speakers

are invited from time to time to provide valuable information

in various fields of work and study. Students of class X and XII

are provided career guidance and counseling by professional

experts every year.

The old students of our school have a forum known as

Puranchandra Ex-students Association (PESA) under which

they interact and get together at least once in a year. A lot of

our students who are in key positions in India and abroad are

keen to provide constructive support to their alma mater.

The school has developed fully operational workshops and laboratories. The students love to work with hands in Electronics, Photography, Carpentry, Sculpture and Clay-Modelling under the expert guidance of instructors. Laboratories for Home Science and Geography have also been developed as per the requirement of the students.

For Physics, Chemistry and Biology three new spacious laboratories have been recently added. These are well ventilated and provided with high quality apparatus and instruments. The Computer laboratories are fully renovated with latest systems and hardware.

The emphasis of our teaching especially up to the middle school is on “I do, I learn”. In the Learning Resource Centre the students are given direct experience of acquiring the knowledge through participation in an activity. This helps them in forming a sound conceptual base in all subjects like Science, Mathematics, Social Studies, and Languages etc. There are separate learning resource centers for junior and senior students.

Useful teaching aids like television, Video Cassette Recorder, Audio Cassette Player, DVD Players, Overhead Projector, Slide Projector, LCD Projector, PA and Amplifier system are available in the air-conditioned A.V. Room. Teachers for teaching learning activities regularly use these teaching aids and gadgets. The department has a good collection of video and audiocassettes and CD's to meet the requirements for supplementing studies and recreational purpose.

The school has a spacious and well-stocked main library. The junior wing has a separate library in which books, magazines and periodicals suitable to their age group are kept. Students are given two periods per week to make use of the library. Also, they are allowed to go to library in their free periods to consult the reference books.

The students are encouraged from the very beginning to use the library and enrich their knowledge. In addition, the librarians are available to give help and advice on study skills and researching topics.

A health record of the students is maintained in the school through regular medical checkups. In case of serious illness the parents are informed immediately and the student is given medical attention in the nearby hospital with the consulting doctors.

The school has its own Medical Inspection room and infirmary. The height and weight of students is recorded and reported to the parents with the period order report. Visiting physicians and specialists at least once in a year carry out general medical, eye and dental checkups.

NURSERY SECTION

To ensure that the students get unadulterated snacks/food at reasonable rates, the school has developed a canteen. The students are allowed to the canteen only at recess. Student/staff may either register for a cooked lunch on a regular basis or choose from a variety of snacks. Price and quality of the items is checked from time to time.

A small bookshop is run independently by a shopkeeper in the premises for books and stationery items for the students. The materials needed for the craftwork are also available to them at reasonable rates. However, the students are free to purchase them from anywhere.

The school has a fleet of nine buses to cover various routes in Kidwai Nagar, Govind Nagar, Ratanlal Nagar, Pandu Nagar, Swaroop Nagar, Azad Nagar, Nawab Ganj, Vishnupuri, Sharda Nagar, Geeta Nagar, Vikas Nagar, Awas Vikas, Armapur, Kalyanpur, The Mall Road, Cantonment, Murray Crossing, Civil Lines and other negotiable areas. This facility is available to the students at a reasonable charge. Accommodation in the school transport has to be applied for, in advance, on a prescribed form.

The school fee can be paid at the Central Bank of India, Subhash Balika Vidyalaya, Saket Nagar, during the first fifteen days of April, July, October and January for each quarter respectively.

A part of the school campus is exclusively set aside for the Nursery Section which was added up in the year 2005. This comprises of LKG & UKG classes under the care of well experienced teachers and assistant teachers. Our tiny tots have big, bright, spacious and vibrant class activity rooms adjoining the greenery and play areas. Colours and craft, along with audio visual equipment, song and dance activities keep them stimulated all through their time in the school. The whole variety of play equipment is safe and age specific.

The need for establishing a hostel has been felt since the inception of the

school. During the last few years of the running of Puranchandra

Vidyaniketan, a lot many parents who are either in transferable

Govt./Semi-Govt./Pvt. jobs /Business or living at a place where there is

no provision of proper educational facilities to their wards. Their wish

has become our commitment to provide the best possible education to

the students in an atmosphere most congenial for the all round

development of the personality. PCVN provides a 'Home' away from

home for the purpose.

The admission into PCVN Boy's Hostel is restricted to:

a) The bonafide students of the school from class V to XII;

b) Those students whose parents/guardians are in transferable jobs or are living at a place outside Kanpur where there is no provision for proper education or are living abroad.

A limited number of seats are available in the hostel for boys only, in different classes in the current session.

ndThe Boy's Hostel Complex is designed and constructed on the 2 floor

of the junior school building, under the direction of a renowned

architect to provide the best facilities and a pleasant ambience.

The hostel has three spacious and nicely illuminated and centrally

aircooled dormitories. Each dormitory houses about twenty students.

In order to make the living of the students comfortable, the living area,

dining hall, recreational rooms, toilets and bathrooms, M.I.

room/Infirmary are provided with excellent furniture and fittings.

The students admitted into the Hostel are provided with textbooks and

stationery items (one time issue) as per the prescribed book list from the

school. The special stationery items will be made available to them from

the schoolbook shop against payment through bills.

I had a very productive visit. The school is truly of a

The students are provided with a wholesome and nutritious vegetarian

diet. All meals are cooked and prepared under the supervision of the

school staff (not a contractor) in the hotel kitchen. The kitchen is

equipped with modern gadgets and stainless steel cutlery and standard

crockery to maintain good hygiene. To promote good eating habits and

table manners, the children are served food in the dining hall situated

on the same floor.

The students of the hostel have access to the telephone through the

dormitory teacher incharge. The parents can communicate to the

students on telephone through the Principal. The parents are requested

to use this facility sparingly.

The students live in the hostel under the constant care of a senior

teacher who is the resident dormitory teacher incharge. The Principal,

who lives on the same floor of the building oversees and supervises the

administration and discipline of the hostel.

Our own schoolteachers give students living in the hostel special tutorial

classes. During these evening classes the students get the help and

guidance of the particular subject teachers.

As soon as the student is admitted into the school and the hostel he will

come under the school rules and hostel rules of discipline. Any violation

of rules will be dealt seriously. The parents are requested to cooperate

with the school authorities to maintain a high standard of discipline.

Anyone seeking admission to Puranchandra Vidyaniketan Boys' Hostel, has to fulfill the necessary conditions for admission into any Class (Class V to XII) as per school rules. A separate Application Form (which is available on request) should be submitted duly filled-in. Before giving the final offer for a seat in the Hostel, the parents of the child will be called for a personal interview with the Principal.

(i) The school will register names for admission in Class LKG, I and V in the month of February.

(ii) Registered applicants will be tested on the basis of standard NCERT syllabus on a particular date in March. (Exact date will be notified at the time of Registration).

(iii) Registration for other classes will depend on availability of seats and would be notified on the school notice board from February.

(iv) Candidates, short-listed on the basis of written test, may be called for an interview and final list of selected students will be displayed on the School Notice Board in the month of March.

(v) Selected students will be admitted within a week after the publication of results.

(vi) For LKG the "preferred" age is 4 years, for UKG 5 years and 6 years for Class I. This preferred age criteria is followed for higher classes as applicable. Valid proof of age is required at the time of registration. The Birth Certificate (original) duly signed by the competent authority will be accepted as a proof of age for Class I and below. For other classes, a valid certificate signed by the Principal of a Govt. recognised school only, will be accepted.

(vii) Two passport size photographs are to be attached with the registration Form.

AdmissionProcedure

WITHDRAWAL RULESThe school may at any time, and without assigning reasons, ask a parent to withdraw his/her ward, if such a course is in the best interest of the school and the student.

A parent wishing to withdraw his ward must give at least one month's notice in writing. The transfer certificate and Examination Result Card will not be issued until all school dues have been paid.
