Introduction | 02

The Karimia Institute is a progressive organisation for education, training, community development and Da’wah. The scope and variety of its activities are focussed on bringing change in individuals through moral and spiritual development. Spirituality is the sense of closeness to the creator of the universe, the wish to please him and the quest to recognise Him. Spirituality gives life a meaning and purpose that motivates one to care and love others. Our aim is to help people to rediscover this spiritual potential through learning, serving and caring. We also strive faithfully to transmit the beautiful message of Islam to our children as well as the wider society.

The Karimia Institute was founded in 1990 by Dr Musharraf Hussain OBE, DL. Starting with a small Masjid in the Forest Fields area of Nottingham. The institute has grown rapidly in the past 20 years, it is now providing facilities for worship, education, sports and self-development in the heart of the Nottingham Muslim community in three locations:

• Karimia Masjid (Forest Fields)• Bobbersmill Community Centre (Bobbersmill)• Nottingham Islamia School (Hyson Green)

This wide range of facilities allows the Karimia Institute to touch the lives of thousands of Muslims every day through its twenty eight projects. There are various activities and events taking place across the three sites everyday including a range of sports activities such as Cricket and Football, adult classes in Arabic and Islamic studies and children’s classes such as Qur’anic studies, Maths and English tuition. As well as these activities and events, the Karimia institute also operates two well established Masjid’s for daily and weekly Juma prayers:

• Karimia Masjid• Ash Shifa Masjid

Both Masjids have quality Quran schools and prayer facilities for men and women. Currently the Institute employs 35 fulltime staff and over 40 part-time. This makes it one of the largest Masjid based organisation in the UK, Alhamdulillah.

Nottingham Islamia SchoolThe School was founded in January 2000 and has always achieved excellent results in key stage 2 SATS. The School aims to provide high quality education in an Islamically rich environment.

1. Education One of the key aspects of the Karimia Institute is individuals learning, we have a variety of activities that run throughout the year at our three sites which help individuals learn and develop themselves.

Aims and objectives1. Maintain a harmonious Islamic

environment.2. Enable the pupils to develop to their

highest capacity as servants of Allah.3. Deliver a broad and balanced

curriculum.4. Fulfil the academic, physical, moral

and spiritual needs of the pupils.

CurriculumThe national curriculum is enriched by adding key Islamic teachings; this consists of teaching Arabic, Islamic Studies and Qur’anic reading and memorisation. This fine blending of the religious, cultural and academic learning not only boosts the self-confidence and self-esteem of our students but makes education relevant for the subjects. Lessons begin and end with a Dua.

Islamic EnvironmentThe school buzzes with devotional songs and prayers. In the pursuit of moral and spiritual development there is a stress on prayer, practising good manners, developing moral characteristics, constant remembrance of Allah, respecting others and showing care and concern for fellow pupils. Children are encouraged to explore the application of Islamic teachings in a modern society.

TeachersOur teachers are all committed to continuous professional development in order to provide our pupils with the best possible education, and to enable the School to continue to be in the vanguard of the growing Muslim Schools movement nationwide.

Qur’anic ClassesTo read the Glorious Quran and learn the basics of Islam in order to encourage Muslim children to learn the Glorious Quran, small classes are organised for a duration of 1 ½ hours where children are taught the reading of Arabic and Islamic morals and manners as well as basic theology and fiqh. As well as learning to read the Quran, children are further taught short surahs with translation, duas, tajweed, rights of parents and neighbours.

Hifz ClassesHifz classes for those children whom wish to memorise the Quran are held at both Karimia Masjid and Ash Shifa Masjid. The best children are selected from our Qur’anic classes and are encouraged to do hifz. So far 10 children have completed memorisation of the complete Quran.

Naat ClassesThe aim of these classes is to help build confidence, artistic talent and develop children’s love of the Prophet. The class is taught by a professional Naat singer with many years of experience behind him. A separate class is run for girls 10-16 years old.

Education | 04

One of the key aspects of the Karimia Institute is individuals learning, we have a variety of activities that run throughout the year at our three sites which help individuals learn and develop themselves.

Aims and objectivesBoth nurseries’ aim to deliver the foundation stage of the National Curriculum as well as providing the first steps towards Islamic education. This is achieved through the following key objectives:

1. Social development: encouraging children to interact and share with others.2. Creative development: encouraging children to explore and share their thoughts

ideas and feelings.3. Physical development: by helping children to understand how their bodies work

and what they need to do to be healthy and safe.

Nursery EnvironmentsA key aspect of the nursery is the environment in which children learn, we have developed a warm caring Islamic environment for children to learn and develop their skills. This is achieved through well planned activities both indoor and outdoor, which are the basis for helping children enjoy learning.

Zaytuna Nursery The Zaytuna Nursery was established in 2002 and is an Ofsted registered nursery for 2-5 year olds. Starting with a small number of children, the nursery has expanded vastly and now has around 80 children attending in two sessions daily throughout the week.

Fig Tree Nursery

The Fig Tree nursery was established in 2007 and is based at the Nottingham Islamia School. It is also an Ofsted registered nursery for children aged 2-5 years old. The nursery has places for 50 children and runs two sessions daily throughout the week.

Urdu classesThese classes are run on the weekend to teach children to read and write Urdu, advanced pupils are encouraged to take Urdu as a GCSE. We believe it is important for children to learn their mother tongue as this will help them to understand their culture and learn about their heritage. These classes are taught by professional teachers who have a deep understanding of the language. Emphasis is not only given to reading and writing but speaking too.

Adult ClassesThese classes are run for adults, as we believe education is for everyone. We arrange classes for adults in Arabic and Islamic Studies. These classes are attended by both men and women in a secure Islamic environment. Classes are taught to a recognised level and accredited by local colleges. Students are awarded certificates upon completion.

Education Support Sunday tutorial classes and revision classes for 5-16 year olds with professional and experienced teachers teaching children English, Maths, Science and Islamic Studies up to GCSE level as well as a personal development programme which runs throughout the year.

The aim of the tutorial classes is to help pupils to learn effectively, enhance pupil’s motivation, develop pupil’s confidence, raise pupil’s expectations, and develop pupil’s morality and spirituality.

InterfaithWe are living in a multi-faith and plural society therefore it is imperative for Muslims to work with other faith communities. Karimia Institute works closely with a number of interfaith organisations such as ‘Faiths in Action’ and is involved in many interfaith projects with these organisations. As well as inviting Christians to visit the Masjid and taking groups to visit Churches, we organise many joint lectures and discussions on topics common between us.

Nationally the Karimia Institute works with the Christian-Muslim forum to improve Christian Muslim relations. We also host seminars for faith awareness for public and voluntary sector. We publish leaflets to build bridges and improve community cohesion. Our leaflet on “Introducing Islam” (www.introducingislam.co.uk) is also used nationally for Islamic awareness projects.

3. Welfare &Social Services

Nikkah & Marriage RegistrationNikkah is a very special occasion for Muslims and the Karimia Institute is here to aid and support people from various Muslim backgrounds in organising this great occasion. To ease this process, the Fatimia room in the Bobbersmill Community Centre is an approved and licensed premise for marriage registrations with the Nottingham City Registrar’s Office, this allows the institute to perform both the Nikkah and registration in one place.

Firduas Burial SocietyThe Quran tells us of a universal truth, “Every soul shall taste death”. Death comes to anyone, anywhere, any time. When it comes, the family need support in arranging the funeral in a dignified way. FBS helps its members by taking care of these expenses; members pay a small annual fee. The centre also provides this service to any Muslim for a small fee. FBS strives to ensure the funeral is completed according to the Sunnah where the family is involved at every step from collecting the body from the ward or home to the cemetery.

Regular advice sessions for welfare, social services, employment, health, Councillors’ and Police meetings are held at our centre.

Madad ProjectThis project is about increasing the awareness to Muslims about the probation service, the criminal justice system as well as encouraging the Muslim community to support ex-offenders. The Muslim community has a religious obligation to care for ex-offenders, we want to raise their awareness. So that eventually Muslim prisoners who have been released or who are going to be released are provided with mentors from local Mosques or Muslim community organisations based in their area. So that the ex-offenders are helped to re-adjust to life outside prison through counselling and practical help with housing, welfare benefits, employment and health issues. We are grateful to north east England probation service for providing us initial support.

UKIEW (UK Islamic Education Waqf)Since 1991 UKIEW has been at the forefront of providing vital support to parents who desire to see the beautiful fruits of Islamic education in their own children, but are unable to pay the required fees, as well as helping community based education projects directly. Every year we collect both Zakah and Sadaqah, adhering to the rules of the Shari’ah, and then distribute it according to the needs of our applicants. By establishing Muslim Schools and struggling to maintain and develop a high standard of educational provision, we are surely setting the right example of good practice which is increasingly being acknowledged by others within the mainstream education system.
