    forasimulation. YoumaythinkoftheprojectGanttchartasresidingwithinSimProject.

    Playersmakedecisionsastowhichresourcetohireorfire,whethertotrainaresourceto

    improvetheirindividualattributes,whentoinvokeavarietyofmanagerialactionsfor

    motivation(e.g.holdapizzaparty),andwhichresourcetoassigntoeachofthetasks.

    Duringprocessing,SimProjecttakesthedecisionsmadeandcalculatestheactualtime

    andcostforeachtaskbasedonthedecisions. SimProjecttheninteractswithMicrosoft

    ProjectTM

    tocreatetheprojectfile(.mppfile)includingtheactualresultsfromeachround

    asitisplayed.

    One

    common

    problem

    with

    computer

    simulations

    is

    that

    students

    may

    obtain

    informationfrompriorstudentsthatwillallowcurrentstudentstohaveacompetitiveedge.

    Wecallthissimulationcarryover. Inordertominimizethisphenomenon,SimProjectsets

    upsimulationsthatareasdifferentfromeachotherasinstandardpractice. Anewand

    differentsimulationisgeneratedbySimProjecteachtimeaninstructorcreatesasimulation

    foraclass.Therearealmostaninfinitenumberofvariationsonthesimulationsbasic

    templates.

    TMisorganizedintwoparts.ThefirstpartiscalledPrePlayinwhich

    resourcebiddingtakesplace. ThesecondisPeriodPlayorRoundPlay. Thisistheformal

    partoftheprojectfromtheStartnodetotheFinishnode.

    Simulationprojectsarestructuredintwoparts;preplayandplay. Theportionof

    thesimulationthatoccursbeforetheStartnodeontheGanttchartiscalledpreplay. The

    onlydecisionsthatcanbemadeinPrePlayaretheselectionofresources. Playersmaybid

    forvirtualresourcesduringthepreplayperiods.Yourinstructormayrunasmanypreplay

    roundsashe/shechoosespriortobeginningplay. (Notethatinstructorsmayalsochooseto

    beginthesimulationwithPlayandnotparticipateinresourcebiddingandselectionrounds.

    Thesimulationwillautomaticallypopulateeachteamwithresourcesifthatoptionis

    RememberthatthescoresaredisplayedonaPERCENTILEbasis. Oneadvantageof

    usingpercentilescoringisthatitprovidesteamswitharelativescorecomparedto

    theotherteams. Theteamwiththebestmetricwillbeshownwithascoreof100%,

    whiletheteamwiththeworstmetricwillbeshownwithascoreof0%. (Itdoesnot

    meanthattheteamhasa"score"of0%.)

    Theauthorssuggestthatyoulookatthefourfactors(Cost,Time,

    Functionality,andStakeholderSatisfaction)separately.

    Cost

    Thecostmetricismeasuredbyadeviationfrombudgetthatrewardsateam

    thatisclosesttothebudget.

    ThePeriodResultspageprovidesthebudgetstatus,aswellasthedetail

    behindthebudgetchargesfortheperiod. Youcanalsogobacktoanyprevious

    Thesimulationcalculatestheactualtimeforeachtaskbaseduponthe

    decisionsmadeandthensendsthedatatoMSProject. MSProjectperformsthe

    loadlevelingtaskandreturnstheelapsedtimefortheperiodtoSimProject. The

    FinishDateisthendisplayedinthePeriodMilestonesectionofthepage.MSProject

    hasmanyreportsthatcanbeusedtoanalyzetheTimeperformanceoftheteam.

    ismeetingtheprojectmilestones. Youshouldaskyourselfifyouareassigningthe

    rightcategoryofresourceandifthoseresourcesarecompletingthetaskson

    budget.

    StakeholderSatisfaction

    LikeFunctionality,StakeholderSatisfactionisarathersubjectfactor.

    Satisfyingstakeholdersonarealprojectisafunctionofwhetherthestakeholders

    arepleased.

    This

    should

    be

    aresult

    of

    whether

    the

    project

    is

    coming

    in

    on

    time

    and

    iftheinteractionswiththeprojectteamarepositive. Therefore,themetricfor

    StakeholderSatisfactionwillbeacombinationofmilestonesmetandacompositeof

    individualattributescores. Notall(say)engineersworkthesame. Somearemore

    efficientthanothers. Toincreasethescoreinthisarea,considerTrainingor

    AllocatedHours(f)

    Whenaresourceisassignedtoatask,thesimaskswhatpercentofthetime

    ofthatresourceistobeallocated. Iftheteamassignstheresourcefor100%,that

    meanstheresourcewillworkonthetaskforeight(8)hoursadayuntilthetaskis

    complete.

    Thisrevealstheconceptofworkormanhoursandelapsedhoursor

    duration. Thesimcalculatestheworkhoursneededforataskandtheelapsed

    hoursitwilltaketheactualpersonassignedtocomeupwiththeelapsedhoursor

    IftheteamisnotdoingwellintheTIMEmetric,itmaybethattheyare
