Thank you to the current and past staff and Board of Family Connections of Southwest Wisconsin for allowing me the privilege of working here the past 5 years. It has been a

blessing, and one that I will truly miss. I appreciate the support I received from

Supporting Families Together Association and all the CCR&R Directors across the state,

along with DCF staff in providing support with implementing quality improvement and best practices to child care providers and the families they serve. Lastly, I want to express how much I enjoyed working with child care providers and families in our region. I cannot think of a more important calling in life than that of the care and support of positive child

development in our communities. Thank you for all that you do to promote the welfare of

our nation's future!

Big Changes Begin with Little Steps Change, taxes, and death are about the only things that are constant in this world! Making personal changes can be mind boggling sometimes, especially when they are big changes like losing weight, controlling our anger, managing our time or learning to discipline our children differently. It can seem overwhelming until you rethink the process. Nobody ever learned how to sprint a mile without first learning to crawl and toddle. Nobody ever lost that extra 20 pounds without first losing an ounce. Every change we make begins with a tiny step in the right direction. Below you will find a worksheet that you might want to try if you are thinking about making a new start of some-thing in your life.

• First, clearly define the change you want to make. Write down a specific goal you have in mind—put it in a positive light—not ‘ quit eating junk food.” Try positive self talk—” I will increase the number of vegetables I eat to 4 a day.”

• Define why you want to make the change. Try to form it so that it is again positive. “I want to change so I can live a long, happy life.” might be better than “I want to change to get my doctor off my back.”

• Next, break it down to small manageable steps. Consider things that you can do today so that you will enjoy the immedi-ate feeling of accomplishment.

• Next, figure out who can support you in your change plan along with what might hold you back. What obstacles might you encounter?

• Finally, define what success will look like? How will it feel? How will you know you have achieved your goal?

• You can do this, just take that first step! By Amy Luebke, Parent Educator Supervisor for Sauk/Columbia Cts.

Fun Activities to do with Your Children/Grandchildren

A Key Magical Card Trick by Edward Glassman —An article by the Father of Ellen Volgarino, Administrative Assistant of Family Connections

How would you like to amuse and have fun with your grandchildren, or fool your friends? Card magic can do it. Here’s one trick to show how easy it is…… To do this trick, you will need: A deck of cards A pencil and a sheet of paper A convenient table top As the trick starts, secretly peek at the bottom card and memorize it. This is now your KEY card. Do not forget it. Spread the deck in your hands and say: “Please pick a card and write it down so you don’t forget it,” and give the spectator-volunteer some paper and a pencil. As she writes down her Chosen card, square the deck making sure to keep your KEY card on the bottom. Place the deck on the table. (NOTE: The ‘Chosen card is the card the spectator-volunteer picked from and returned to the deck, and which you, the magician, will identify.) Ask her to place her Chosen card on top of the deck. Then you cut it so her card moves to the center of the deck. (NOTE: Here’s what else happened when you cut the deck. Your Chosen card moved to the center of the deck and settled next to and directly on top of her Chosen card.) Now look through the deck, find you KEY card, pretend to meditate, say a magic word, and presto, call out the card directly below your KEY card. This is her Chosen card. WOW! She will think you are a wizard, which you are!

PRACTICE AND YOU WILL MYSTIFY ALL!!
