Dear Chamber Members,

It seems impossible, but fall is almost over and holiday happenings are upon us. This has been a very busy time for us as we prepare for all of the great events and promotions for November and December.

Please take the time to look through this month’s newsletter – there is SO much going on and we’ve tried to capture as much of it as we can. The calendar is a quick snapshot of the month for your perusal.

As we are approaching the holidays, our emphasis of “Shop Local, Shop Platteville” is being highlighted. Information about our largest retail event, “Santa Bucks” is included in this newsletter. The promotion will run from November 20th, in conjunction with the Business Holiday Open House weekend, through December 31st. On November 20th, 21st and 22nd, all purchases made at partici-pating businesses will be eligible for DOUBLE Santa Bucks! A new initiative to encourage shopping locally involves brightly colored canvas shopping bags which will be distributed throughout the business community. Our Business Promotions Committee would like to extend a big thank you to our financial institutions for sponsoring the bags! Once again, we will be celebrating Small Business Saturday on November 28th.

Katie’s Garden Winter Wonderland is a new holiday event being planned by Building Platteville, Inc.. Beginning at 4:00PM on Friday, December 4th, you can visit Katie’s Garden and walk through the Garden amongst lighted holiday trees, have family photos taken in a beautiful sleigh and visit with Santa. Refreshments will be avail-able. On Saturday, the event will run from 10AM-3PM.

I also want to remind all of our members about our “Platteville Welcomes You” promotion which provides information about the community and our businesses that is presented to newcomers to the community. All chamber members are encouraged to have their flyers or promotional items put into these welcome bags. We welcome 50-75 newcomers each year. Please call the chamber if you have questions on this.

Also – save the date - our Annual Celebration is set for Friday, February 19, 2016 at Velzy Commons in the Ullsvik Center on the UWP campus. We will be celebrating UW-Platteville’s 150th anniversary!

Dealing with Grief through the Holidays - Platteville – Southwest Health Tuesday, December 1st, 2pm – 4pm

Although the holiday season is often a time of family, fun and food, for some people it can be a time of mourning and grief for a loved one lost. The passing of a loved one is never easy. Whether it happened a month, year or decade ago, the holidays can sometimes be more diffi-cult than the rest of the year.

While nothing can change the fact that holidays will be difficult while grieving there are things you can do to make things less painful.

Recognize you are not functioning at full ca-pacity. Grief can cause you to become over-whelmed by even simple decisions so know your limits and proactively decide what activi-ties you want to participate in, how you will ac-knowledge your loss, and how you will remem-ber the person who has died. Know whatever you decide to do this year; you may decide to do something completely different next year.

Communicate your decisions with others, es-pecially those who will be affected by them. Be aware that others may deal with their grief differently than you, and that is okay. There is no right or wrong way to grieve, and each person deals with loss in his or her own way. It is important to respect the choices others make regarding their holiday plans.

Finally, don’t forget to take care of yourself. Do what you can - no more, no less.

Because Home Health United recognizes the holidays can be difficult for those who are grieving, we are holding “Grief Through the Holidays”, a single session grief support group which focuses on dealing with grief during the holiday season. Our groups are offered at no cost and are open to anyone in the community dealing with loss.

“Grief Through the Holidays” is intended for adults and no registration is required.

2016 SWE Region H Conference Co-Chairs

Hailey Myers (right) "Ever since the (SWE) welcome event for freshmen that I attended, I have had a family and a home in Platteville. The support system we have is amazing."

Amy True (left) “SWE has provided me with so many friendships, opportunities, and memories. It has helped me to grow as an individual, as well as learn important life skills.”

The University of Wisconsin-Platteville is excited to host the Society of Women Engineers Region H conference February 26-28, 2016. SWE is a student organization and Region H—made up of 5,600 professional and collegiate members in eight states—is the largest SWE region. This is an exciting opportunity for UW-Platteville students as this conference is entirely student-run. We are especially honored to host this year’s conference, as the university celebrates its sesquicentennial year. Women have worked throughout history to find equity in a traditionally male-dominated field, paving the way for women today, as a more gender-balanced engineering workforce emerges. This is evident on our own campus, where the number of women in engineering majors has nearly doubled since 2010. What better time to celebrate the achievements of women in engineering, as we celebrate our institution’s remarkable milestone.

The theme of the conference, ““M” Powering women”, will focus on providing advice and tools so that women and men can advance, aspire, and achieve. With over 700 SWE members expected to attend, the conference is a significant source of networking opportunities and development of personal leadership, professional ties, and SWE unity.

Conference attendees will become future leaders and significant drivers of economic growth in our tri-state region. We hope you will consider attending, publicizing, and supporting the conference. For more information, visit http://www.uwplatt.edu/ems-success/swe-region-h-conference.

Mirus, Partner, Boardman & Clark LLP, Madison, WIProgram Description: Challenges of the Electronic WorkplaceWhether you work in an office setting or a manufacturing plant, technology and electronic communications have changed your workplace and the ways in which employees interact with one another. Speaker Profile: Jennifer S. Mirus is a partner in the Labor and Employment Law Practice Group at the Boardman & Clark LLP in Madison, Wisconsin. Jennifer represents employers in all aspects of employment relations, including hiring, discipline and terminations, wage and hour issues, discrimination, FMLA, and harassment.
