Toilets save lives because human waste spreads killer diseases, and severely contam-inates water and soil that sustain human life. With millions practising open defecation and lack of treatment and septage units, the en-vironment is becoming an open sewer. This can have a devastating impact upon public health, living and working conditions, nutri-tion, education and economic productivity across the world. It is therefore important to build safe toilets and sanitation systems that work in harmony with the ecosystem.

Celebrated on November 19th every year, World Toilet Day (WTD) helps break taboos around toilets and make sanitation for all a global development priority. It caters to SDG 6 which further aims to ensure that everyone has a safe toilet and that no-one practises open defecation by 2030. This year’s theme for WTD is “When Nature Calls, We need a Toilet.”

World Toilet DayUniversal Children’s Day is celebrated on 20th November with the objective to advocate, promote and celebrate children’s rights. It is a day when children should not just be made aware about their rights, they must also be taught of their responsibilities and duties towards the environment, how to preserve it and the importance of cleanliness in and around them. Children are the powerhouses of energy which needs to be given appropriate direction because they are our hopes for a brighter and beautiful future!

Children are what we were - and what we aspire to be - Carefree, joyous, innocent, learning, creative and most importantly - playful. We had all these qualities in us, but somewhere in the journey of life, we dropped them. We replaced natural play with work, happiness with things, innocence with intellect and creativity with routine... and consequently, happiness with worry.

But it need not be so; what we need is a ‘child-like’ frame of mind, once again. Positive, enthusiastic, determined and making work play. In the words of Chinese philosopher Mencius – ‘Great is the human who has not lost his childlike heart.’

Let us all aspire to be children again!

Best Wishes Ashwajit Singh

Children are the future of the nation who are now highly vulnerable to abuse and exploitation on a daily basis. From food to shelter to education, children rely on adults and it is thus imperative that their rights be heard if they are to survive and develop into the next generation of world citizens. It is also important that we make them aware about the protecting the environment, since they are the future-bearers of the duties and responsibilities to help sustain lives on the earth.

Universal Children’s Day (20 November) aims to promote international togetherness and awareness among children worldwide. Theme for 2018 is ‘Children are taking over and turning the world blue’ which offers each of us an inspirational entry-point to advocate, promote and celebrate children’s rights, translating into dialogues and actions that will build a better world for Children.
