Note from the Chancellor
The TERI University is a unique institution of higher learning that benefits from the enormous range of objective-oriented research carried out by TERI (The Energy and Resources Institute). The challenge of improving the environment, both at local and the global levels is an issue that is increasingly engaging the attention of corporate organizations in India and abroad and, of course, governments and civil society in general. The TERI University's M Sc programmes are designed specifically to help organizations, particularly in the corporate sector, meet challenges that are emerging throughout the world.
These programmes are also of great value to the scientific community, policy-makers, as well as NGOs and representatives of civil society. Given the practical orientation of all the work that TERI carries out, the programmes are necessarily interdisciplinary in nature and focus on problem solving. Students who graduate would, therefore, be uniquely qualified to undertake major initiatives in the efficient management of natural resources and the prevention of environmental pollution. The programmes equip students to solve problems in these fields at source rather than through end-of-pipe interventions. This saves costs and results in longer-term benefits for the organization concerned and for society in general.

Established in 1998 and recognized as a Deemed University in 1999 by the University Grants Commission, the TERI University has evolved as a reputed research university and attracts some of the finest minds to explore new ideas and master the proven ones. The genesis of the TERI University is rooted in the comprehensive research, consultancy, and outreach activities of TERI, a not-for-profit, independent research institute recognized globally for its contribution to scientific and policy research in the realms of energy, environment, and sustainable development.
The University’s special relationship with TERI has propelled and influenced the evolution of its academic units. This relationship is enshrined in an MoU (Memorandum of Understanding) between the University and TERI, wherein the two have agreed on collaborative research and programmes; joint studies; and mutual support for seminars, symposia, and conferences. TERI also provided an initial corpus to financially support the University’s establishment and continues to support
About TERI University
several components of the University’s capital and revenue expenses. University receives no regular grants/aid from any source. Additionally, TERI’s existing infrastructure – state-of-the-art laboratories, well equipped field stations, and highly professional manpower – is available for the TERI University to utilize and gain from.
With this consolidated base, in February 2002, the TERI University also entered into an MoU with the School of Forestry and Environmental Studies of Yale University. In 2004 the TERI University signed MOUs with Nottingham University, UK; in 2006 with the University of Saskatchewan, Canada and in 2008 with the University of Iceland, with North Carolina State University and with Freie University, Germany. These inter-institutional MoUs are aimed at facilitating a mutually beneficial exchange of students, faculty, knowledge, resources, and ideas.

In 2002, the Ford Foundation gave an endowment to the University for setting up the Department of Natural Resources. In 2004, NTPC (National Thermal Power Corporation) gave a grant for setting up the NTPC Chair in the Department of Policy Studies. In the same year, the Department of Personnel and Training, Government of India, entered into a collaboration with the University for running a master’s programme for mid-career civil servants. In 2005, NHPC (National Hydro Power Corporation) gave a grant for setting up the NHPC Chair in the Department of Policy Studies
The TERI University aspires to contribute globally by serving society as a seat of advanced learning, and promote learning through teaching and creating and sharing knowledge. The University commits itself to academic excellence and an environment which encourages personal and intellectual growth. The University provides world-class facilities and resources to its students and faculty so as to usher in innovative and multi-disciplinary research.
The emblem signifies what TERI University stands for: looking for glory through reaching new horizons. The figure of a running student symbolizes his quest for knowledge with his arm reaching out towards the rising sun. The rising sun stands for hopes, aspirations, enlightenment, and the ultimate source of all life and knowledge on earth. All of this is synchronous with new and innovative research in an institution of higher education. The dark blue colour signifies seriousness and tranquility, while the bright orange and red stand for the enthusiasm and the fire within—qualities that student’s of TERI University imbibe. Along with the lofty ideals, which the University stands for, the use of capital letters has been avoided in the emblem to signify modesty and humility, which were the hallmarks of ancient Indian sages and rishis.

Academic system
In September 2008, the university moved to its new campus in Vasant Kunj. The campus, which has been constructed to include modern pedagogical amenities, showcases green building design. TERI University harnesses the best of modern technology to satisfy the intellectual curiosity of its students and faculty. Well-equipped biotechnology, environmental chemistry, seed technology, ecology and GIS (geographic information system) laboratories, replete with advanced equipment and facilities, aid and stimulate research. For courses such as Biodiversity and Soil Conservation, field surveys and experiments are carried out. Enabled by information technology tools, the University is fully networked and has an online presence. Some state-of-the-art equipment available include biolistic guns, microscopes equipped for fluorescence and photography, electrophoretic unit for gel run, atomic absorption spectrophotometer, automatic gene sequencer, lyophilizer, and multi-stage particle size analyser. TERI has South Asia’s most comprehensive research library on energy and the environment: over 25000 books, CD-ROMs, databases, reports, journals, government documents, conference proceedings, standards, pamphlets, reprints, press clippings, annual reports, and bibliographic and statistical databases are available in the library. An electronic library is being developed. High-end computers, scanners, digitizers, printers, plotters, digital image processing software like Erdas Imagine 8.7, ARC Internet Map Server, and GIS software like ArcGIS 8.3, ArcView 3X, and ArcInfo 3.5 are also available to students.
The TERI University follows a semester system. Each academic year consists of two semesters; one starting in August each year and the second starting in January each year. A credit system is followed where each course is assigned a certain number of credits depending upon its lecture, tutorial, and laboratory contact hours in the semester. The students are allowed to register for courses so that they are able to pursue a programme at their own pace within certain bounds.

Academic performance monitoring
Projects integrated into the programme
Extra curricular activities
Conduct and discipline
The MPEC (Master’s Programme Executive Committee)monitors the academic performance of the students.
Given the interdisciplinary nature of the master’s courses, the interrelationship amongst different subjects in the curriculum is highlighted through a minor project and a major project. The projects allow integration of knowledge acquired by students in the various courses attended during the earlier semesters and permit application of knowledge to analyzing real-life problems in the chosen area of interest. The minor project is scheduled for the summer and earns four credits. This project initiates students into interdisciplinary research. The major project is scheduled for the last semester of the programme. It carries 20 credits and students are required to submit a project report at the end of the semester along with a presentation and viva-voce. Planning for this begins in Semester III when the research topic is identified and the research proposal written. Students are encouraged to do the major project work outside the campus, in private and government institutes and organizations, academic organizations, and industry, with support provided by the department. A pre-assigned faculty member continuously monitors and evaluates students’ progress.
In order to highlight student’s aptitude in areas outside the curriculum, they are encouraged to take part in and organize cultural activities.
TERI University has a fairly rigid honour code. Students must attend a minimum of 75% of the classes held. Attendance requirement for field work and practicals is 100%.
Admission procedure
Evaluation procedure of the University
Admission to the two M Sc programmes is based on a written test conducted by the University. Those with minimum of 60% aggregate in the Bachelor’s degree are eligible to appear for the test.
Evaluation is a continuous process at TERI University. Students are assessed on the following criteria.• Assignments • Group tasks• Presentations • Field survey• Term papers • Tests• Classroom participation • Minor project• Laboratory experiments • Major project
A letter grade with a specific number of grade points is awarded in each course for which a student is registered. The grading system followed at the University is given below.
A+ 10 Outstanding
A 9 Excellent
B+ 8 Very good
B 7 Good
C+ 6 Average
C 5 Below average
D 4 Marginal
F 0 Very poor (fail)
A student’s performance is measured by the grade point average for the number of credits earned by the student. Only courses in which a student has obtained ‘D’ or a higher grade will be counted as credits earned by the student. On obtaining a pass grade, the student earns credit for the courses taken. The performance of a student is evaluated in terms of following two indices.
1. SGPA (Semester Grade Point Average)
2. CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average)
The CGPA is a grade point average for all the completed semesters. For the award of M Sc (Natural Resources management), M Sc (Water Resources Management), M Sc (Environmental Studies), M Sc (Geoinformatics), M Sc (Climate Science and policy) and M Sc (Plant Biotechnology) a student must earn a minimum of 95 credits, which must include
• 47 credits in core courses
• 24 credits in elective courses in the area of specialization
• 4 credits in a summer minor project
• 20 credits in a major project.

Centre for Energy and Environment
Department of Natural Resources
The Centre for Bioresources and Biotechnology is dedicated to promoting and advancing innovative biological research with a special emphasis on management of plant and microbial bioresources. The research conducted in the area of plant biotechnology includes micro-propagation and plant tissue culture, bio-prospecting for medicinal and pesticidal properties from plant genetic resources, crop improvement, and genetic enhancement of economically important species through breeding and transgenic approach. Generation of novel DNA-based markers for assessment of genetic diversity and marker-assisted breeding are essential components of plant molecular biology research. Research areas in microbial biotechnology include bioremediation and functional-cum-molecular characterization of microbial diversity.
The Centre for Energy and Environment is engaged in research in the broad area of clean technologies to achieve energy efficiency and minimize adverse environmental impacts. Some areas of emphasis include clean coal technologies, membrane separation processes, solar energy engineering, biomass utilization, and materials for high temperature applications such as fuel cells.
The mission of the Department of Natural Resources is to advance and impart knowledge about the environment and natural resources, including their characteristics and dynamics, their economic and societal value, and their management in an ecologically, socially, technically, and economically sound and sustainable manner. This mission is supported by the research, teaching, and extension programmes carried out by its faculty and students. The department offers master’s and doctoral programmes that are challenging and prepare students to meet the changing needs of society for effective and integrated environmental, natural and water resources management. The department carries out research in water resources planning, management, and modeling, GIS and soft computing techniques; pollution modeling and monitoring; forest ecology, biodiversity assessment and conservation; invasion ecology, urban ecology; environmental and resource economics; impact assessment; medicinal and aromatic plants; waste management; and environment management. The emphasis is on carrying out interdisciplinary research. The M Sc programmes strive to create natural resources/
environmental/water resources managers, scientists, and policy advisers through courses in the biological and chemical sciences, economics, social science, public policy, and advanced tools and techniques such as modeling, GIS, and remote sensing. The interdisciplinary relationship is understood and applied to tackle issues related to the environment/natural/water resources through minor and major projects. This places our students in the unique position of being able to appreciate the many facets and challenges that are clearly beyond the confines of a single discipline.
Programmes offered at the University are:
M Sc (Environmental Studies)M Sc (Natural Resources Management)M Sc (Water Resources Management)M Sc (Geoinformatics)M Sc (Plant Biotechnology)M Sc (Climate Science and Policy)
In view of the environmental challenges the world faces in the twenty-first century and in order to spread the experience which TERI has gained in preserving biodiversity and ecosystems, sustaining forests, translating scientific knowledge into sound policy, and in integrating of environmental issues into development, the TERI University offers programmes leading to the award of an M Sc in Environmental Studies, Natural Resources M a n a g e m e n t a n d i n Wa t e r R e s o u r c e s Management. The programmes run by the Department of Natural Resources are intended to educate students to become natural resource/ environmental managers, scientists, researchers, and policymakers through courses in the natural sciences, economics, and policy and law.
The following courses are part of the curriculum of the M Sc programmes.
2009-2011
Note: Students are encouraged to take up courses from any other programme, provided they meet the pre-requisite and interest.
