OVERVIEW OF THE KINESIOLOGY & HEALTH SCIENCE PROGRAM AT YORK York offers Kinesiology & Health Science students one of the most diversified schools of Kinesiology & Health Science in North America and the largest of its kind in Canada. Kinesiology & Health Science is the study of human movement and the relationship between physical activity and health. Most students enter the Kinesiology & Health Science Program because they have a keen interest in physical activity and health. At York you will encounter a multidisciplinary program focused on helping you build an understanding of the anatomical, physiological, psychological and cultural aspects of human movement and health. A wide range of program options, including numerous academic elective and practicum courses, will provide the foundations to launch you into the career of your choice in fields such as health and fitness, teaching, or coaching, and will also prepare you for graduate level professional training in specialized programs such as medicine, physiotherapy, dentistry, chiropractic, education and research. York’s Kinesiology & Health Science program offers multiple degree options tailored to your academic and career interests. These include the Specialized Honours B.A. or B.Sc. in Kinesiology & Health Science, as well as Double Major and Major-Minor / Minor-Major B.A. or B.Sc. program options which enable you to combine your studies in Kinesiology & Health Science with another discipline. York’s Kinesiology & Health Science program combines lectures, tutorials, experiential laboratories, as well as physical activity / practicum courses, to give you the opportunity to develop skills in a wide variety of settings and approaches. Our program features more than fifty professors who enthusiastically engage in health, activity and sport-related teaching and research at York. York’s world class athletic training facilities (which include the City of Toronto Track and Field Centre, the Rexall Tennis Centre, the Ice Gardens, stadium, gymnasia, dance studios, squash courts, sport playing fields, softball fields, outdoor tennis courts, squash courts, swimming pool, and fitness centre) will ensure that you are able to apply classroom learning to sport settings and develop your own physical and professional skills. As a student, you may join a variety of national associations in addition to York’s Kinesiology & Health Science Student Organization (KAHSSO). The Kinesiology and Health Science academic (KINE) and practicum (PKIN) courses, degree types, certificate streams and degree requirements are described in this publication. Information presented here should only be used as a guide. Students should consult the York Calendar, Undergraduate Programs (www.registrar.yorku.ca) for specific rules and regulations. Questions regarding Kinesiology and Health Science programs and courses can be addressed to the Undergraduate Office, 341 Bethune College, York University. Questions related to the Faculty requirements should be directed to the Faculty of Health Office of Student and Academic Services ([email protected]). The Graduate Programme in Kinesiology and Health Science at York University offers courses, research training and professional training leading to M.Sc., M.A. and Ph.D. degrees. Choice of the M.Sc. or M.A. research degree is determined by the background of the student, the research focus of the supervisor and choice of courses. IMPORTANT THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT BEING A STUDENT IN KINESIOLOGY & HEALTH SCIENCE

KINESIOLOGY AND HEALTH SCIENCE: AN HONOURS PROGRAM Students may select Kinesiology and Health Science as their study major or minor in the first year or subsequent years if they have Honours standing. Honours standing must be maintained to proceed to subsequent years, and to graduate. Students who do not maintain Honours standing may not continue in the Kinesiology and Health Science Program and must select another major. HONOURS STANDING GUIDELINES To continue in Honours, students, upon completion of each academic session, must have a cumulative average as follows:

Year Credit Range Cumulative overall average required

1 0 to 23 4.00 2 24-53 4.25 3 54-83 4.80 4 84 or more 5.00

PLAGIARISM AND ACADEMIC DISHONESTY Kinesiology & Health Science takes dishonesty and plagiarism very seriously, and will prosecute offenders. According to the Senate Policy on Academic Honesty, “Plagiarism is the representation of another person’s ideas or writing as one’s own. The most obvious form of this kind of dishonesty is the presentation of all or part of another person’s published work as something one has written. However, paraphrasing another’s writing without proper acknowledgement may also be considered plagiarism.”

It is your responsibility to know what constitutes plagiarism and academic dishonesty. Any breach of academic honesty will be dealt with according to the University’s policies, which can be found at the following website: http://www.yorku.ca/academicintegrity/ Academic Integrity Tutorial http://www.yorku.ca/tutorial/academic_integrity/ UNIVERSITY, SENATE, FACULTY AND DEPARTMENTAL REGULATIONS Students are reminded that they must abide by all the University, Senate, Faculty and Departmental regulations in effect. The following email addresses are provided to assist students, staff and faculty in finding answers to questions concerning these regulations: University Policies, Procedures & Regulations Database: http://www.yorku.ca/secretariat/policies/ Faculty of Health: http://www.health.yorku.ca Faculty of Health, Division of Students: http://www.registrar.yorku.ca/HealthFaculty Undergraduate Program in Kinesiology and Health Science: http://www.kinesiology.yorku.ca/index.asp Students are reminded that they may petition on reasonable grounds, in writing, any Faculty regulations. All enquiries about regulations and petition procedures should be addressed to the Registrar’s Office. For further information on petitions and appeals, students should visit the web site for the Registrar’s Office: http://www.registrar.yorku.ca/

GRADES AND GRADING SCHEMES

Except for courses taken under the Ungraded Option, courses in the Undergraduate faculties represented in this publication are graded according to the scale below. The grade point values are used to compute averages. For information regarding ungraded option regulations, refer to the Grading information available in the Faculty of Health section of the York Calendar. NOTE: Only courses taken at York University are included in the grade point averages. The percentages indicated are not part of the official grading scheme and are meant only to be used as guidelines. The letter-grade system is the fundamental system of assessment of performance in undergraduate programs at York University.

Grade

Grading Scheme and Feedback Policy It is University policy that the grading scheme for a course (i.e. kinds and weights of assignments, essays, exams, etc.) be announced, and be available in writing, within the first two weeks of class, and that, under normal circumstances, some graded feedback worth at least 15% of the final grade for Fall, Winter or Summer Term and 30% or “full year” courses offered in the Fall/Winter Term, be received by students in all courses prior to the final withdrawal date from a course without receiving a grade, with the following exceptions:

a) graduate or senior undergraduate courses where course work typically, or at the instructor's discretion, consists of a single piece of work (e.g. honours theses or graduate research papers not due by the drop date, etc.)

b) practicum courses c) ungraded courses d) courses in Faculties where the drop date occurs within the first 3 weeks of classes e) courses which run on a compressed schedule ( a course which accomplishes its academic credits of work at a rate of one

credit hour per two calendar weeks or faster) Note: Under unusual and/or unforeseeable circumstances which disrupt the academic norm, instructors are expected to provide grading schemes and academic feedback in the spirit of these regulations, as soon as possible.

HOW TO CALCULATE THE CUMULATIVE GRADE POINT AVERAGE (CGPA) Averages are calculated on the basis of the point value assigned to each letter grade: A+ = 9.0 A = 8.0 B+ = 7.0 B = 6.0 C+ = 5.0 C = 4.0 D+ = 3.0 D = 2.0 E = 1.0 F = 0.0 Calculating your CGPA:

1. Multiply total credit of each course by the grade point. 2. Add up total number of credits. 3. Add up total grade points. 4. Divide the total grade points by the total credits

*Visit the GPA calculator at http://www.arts.yorku.ca/advising/gpa.htm Example:

Courses Grade Points Credits Total Grade Points BIOL 1010 6.0 C+ 5.0 X 6 = 30

MATH 1025 3.0 F 0.0 X 3 = 0 KINE 2031 3.0 B 6.0 X 3 = 18 KINE 2049 3.0 B+ 7.0 X 3 = 21 CSE 1520 3.0 A 8.0 X 3 = 24 Total 18 Total 93 (93 grade points divided by 18 credits = 5.17 CGPA)

Kinesiology and Health Science is an Honours program. As such, Kinesiology and Health Science major students are required to maintain Honours Standing in order to proceed in KINE and to be eligible to graduate. It is recommended that students plan course selections to meet graduation requirements for a 90 credit degree in another subject area. This is essential if the cumulative grade point average of the student falls below Honours Standing and may be important if the student is accepted into a professional program such as medicine. In these situations a student may apply to graduate with a York University degree in another subject area.

What do I need to know to graduate? 1. It is the responsibility of each student to be familiar with the specific requirements associated with the

degree, diploma, or certificate sought. 2. While academic advice is available, it is the responsibility of each student to ensure that courses

chosen meet all program and degree requirements for graduation.

Each student is also responsible for the following:

verifying the accuracy of registration records, including all course changes; fulfilling the requirements and being aware of academic progress in all registered courses; noting and abiding by the sessional deadline dates published in the Lecture Schedule each year,

especially course change deadline dates. PLEASE NOTE: 1. Use the checklists found in this publication (and online at www.kinesiology.yorku.ca) to keep track of your

progress. 2. Only students who have completed the checklists in this publication will be seen for advising sessions in

the Kinesiology Undergraduate Office. 3. You must apply to graduate before your record will be examined to ensure that you have completed all of

your degree requirements. (http://www.yorku.ca/mygraduation/Convocation/gradchecklist.htm) 4. The deadline to apply for the Spring (June) convocation is January 31st. 5. The deadline to apply for the Fall (October) convocation is July 31st. 6. Students are advised to apply to graduate as early as possible, preferably after registering in their final

course(s). The Degree Audit Unit sends letters to students who appear to be missing a degree requirement. If you have applied early and there is a problem you may be able to resolve the problem during the Winter term.

7. Students are advised to complete core practicum requirements by the end of their third year of study.

PRACTICUM (PKIN) PROGRAM INFORMATION – continued PREREQUISITES: Where courses are offered consecutively in the same area (example: Volleyball I, Volleyball II) students must have achieved at least a B in the preceding course in order to take the subsequent course unless otherwise stated. Qualified students may be admitted directly into an advanced level course with the permission of the instructor. In these cases no credit is awarded for the lower level course. PRACTICUM ENROLMENT Priority enrolment is given to Kinesiology and Health Science Honours standing students. Students are responsible for enrolling, adding, and dropping courses. The add/drop dates for the practicum courses are the same as those published for the academic courses. Students requesting the drop of an F grade received because they enrolled in a PKIN but did not attend or participate will be charged a $25.00 administrative fee per PKIN course. The money will be placed in the scholarship fund for Kinesiology and Health Science students. Note: Students who attend more than 20 percent of the classes for a course are not eligible to request a grade removal. PARTICIPATION To receive credit for a practicum course a student must attend and actively participate in a minimum of 80 percent of the classes for the course. In extenuating circumstances, such as verified illness or injury which prevents full participation, the grading during the term may be changed to a Pass/Fail. In such cases the student and the instructor agree in writing to the terms for a pass in the course. A copy of this signed written agreement must be forwarded to the Undergraduate Office. Students with a disability are considered on a case-by-case basis. EVALUATION - GRADES Evaluation of a student’s competence in a practicum is based on skill execution and skill theory (oral and/or written). The practicum grading scale is A, B, C, F or Pass/Fail option. To exercise the Pass/Fail option, students must sign the appropriate documentation within the first two weeks of the term in which the course begins. Pass/Fail option forms are available from PKIN course directors. Please note: practicum credits and grades are listed on the official transcript but are not calculated in the cumulative grade point average. PRACTICUM ASSISTANT Students who are exceptionally skilled and experienced in a particular practicum area may be given permission by the practicum instructor to receive practicum credits for assisting in the instruction of the course. VARSITY SPORT PRACTICUM CREDITS Students who complete a season as a member of a York University varsity team are eligible to receive a 2.0 credit practicum allowance per year to a maximum of 6.0 practicum credits. To receive this credit students must complete an application form available from the Undergraduate Office (341 Bethune College). EXCEPTIONAL CIRCUMSTANCES Students who believe they may have difficulty completing the practicum requirements must contact the Undergraduate Office prior to completing their second year of study.

FITNESS ASSESSMENT and EXERCISE COUNSELLING CERTIFICATE STREAM

INTRODUCTION The fitness movement has been growing dramatically over the past three decades. Many Canadians have become convinced that enhanced fitness leads to healthier, longer and more enjoyable lives. Corporations have learned that improved employee fitness translates into increased productivity. Governments, faced with soaring medical expenses, have come to realize that preventive medicine is a more cost effective solution to health care and they are now committed to promoting healthy lifestyles. Consequently, the "business" of fitness with all of its spin-off enterprises is one of the fastest growing industries in Canada. With this growth there has developed an increasing opportunity for employment. During the early years there was virtually no regulation on the qualifications of fitness practitioners. However, with increasing consumer sophistication and both public and government concerns for quality control, there was a demand for qualified fitness professionals. Therefore, national certification programs were developed for fitness practitioners and with the implementation of government sanctioned provincial fitness safety standards, these have become essential qualifications for persons seeking employment in the fitness industry. The York University Certificate in Fitness Assessment and Exercise Counselling is earned concurrently with the honours degree in Kinesiology & Health Science by selecting specified courses along with the required core courses. While completing the courses in the certificate program, national certification can be obtained as a CSEP- Certified Personal Trainer and CSEP Certified Exercise Physiologist. ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS: Students must be degree candidates in Kinesiology and Health Science or special students with previously completed Kinesiology related degrees. Application to the certificate program may be made after completing a minimum of four full courses (including HH/KINE 1020 6.0), but students are also accepted after their second (minimum of 8 full courses) and third year of studies (minimum of 12 full courses).
