Welcome to the October edition of
Victorian Pistol News.
As we mentioned last time The Greens
are threatening our sport by suggesting
that getting rid of semi automatic
pistols from licensed shooters, crime
will be dramatically reduced. Many of
us put pen to paper expressing our
opinions to this enquiry. One has been
sent to me for publication here on page
16. Due to the number of submissions—
over 380 — the date which they will be
tabled has been extended until 2nd
December.
October is a busy month for clubs
running Open competitions. It gives us
all a chance to visit another club and
compete with similarly skilled shooters,
as well as the best shooters. I encourage
all club members to enter an Open,
especially those close to home.
I attended the ISSF Open at Shepparton
where the club put on great weather
and a fine competition. It was well
worth the drive. A report is on page
27. Several others form Melbourne
made the long drive to Mildura and
thoroughly enjoyed the State Titles for
WA1500 and Service 25. Brett has
written a report about that
and also the recent Service Postal
Finals.
The ISSF World Cup was run 6-20th
September in Granada, Spain. I found a
result on line you maybe interested in;

by Jongoh Jin of Korea.
If you are interested in coaching at club
level you will enjoy Karen’s article
about their experience at Horsham on
page 6.
Peninsula Pistol Club has experienced
some tragedies in recent weeks. A well
known long term member passed away
after a short illness, then their secretary
died suddenly. Tragic. Then, yesterday
we heard the terrible news that fire has
ravaged their club. If you are in a
position to offer assistance I’m sure it
would be gratefully received.
As normal this edition of VPN is being
sent via email to club secretaries who
can forward it to individual members.

W elcome to our new members
and the regular members as
well. Another issue already and the
year is closing fast.
On the shooting front VAPA has had a
problem with sneaky introduction of
legislation that could be interpreted as
harmful to our members if not queried,
and queried it was. The second reading
has been re-examined and the content
hopefully reworded for a better
interpretation.
The legislation in question is the
insertion into the firearms act of
schedule 5 a whole new addition that
deals with Carriage of firearms. NORI

The Postal Finals have been shot and
decided and if I may say a very
successful year as a competition and
the final series which were
held at various venues across
the state. Those that I attended were
well run and the participation and
cooperation was first class as was the
comradery shown between the
competing clubs. Well done Gary
Barnes.
—
The other discussion point is the
Greens senate inquiry to rid the
sporting sector of semi auto pistols.
Many excellent presentations have been
submitted to the committee however
my main concern is that the chair of the
committee is a greens senator, I
certainly hope we can count on the
integrity and fairness from the other
senators, because if they get this one
through, then its revolvers next and
after that Fishing is on their agenda.
Thank you to all the members who had
either sent submissions in or took part
in the compilation of submissions for
the senate hearing.
Congratulations to all our shooters in
all disciplines at Commonwealth
Games for their efforts and victories.

In July, 10 of us from Horsham pistol
club had a successful weekend at the
Mildura Open - winning lots of medals
in D grade!
To achieve our goal of taking over C
grade next year we decided to enlist
some help and get some official
coaching happening.
Will Crossman, who was a level 1 coach
and competed at Commonwealth
Shooting Federation Championships
and World Cup, provided his time,
experience and knowledge in a fun and
educational weekend at Horsham
recently.
Somehow between bacon and egg
burgers for brekky, BBQ lunches, tea
out, talking and laughing, we found
time to pick up a few tips.
The Basics It's always the basics that are so
important; grip, stance and front sight.
Grip.
Will came prepared with his electric file
and spent the first morning fine-tuning
everyone's grips. We now look like
e x p e r i e n c e d
shooters with our
individualised grips;
we just need to practice, practice,
practice to live up to the image.
Stance.
Stance; comfortable and stable. Try
practicing your stance with your eyes
closed, notice the wobble and try to
reduce it. An exercise you can fit into
many parts of your day.
Front Sight.
We all know "front sight", "look at the
front sight" and think that's what we
do, but I also know that I usually look
through the front sight, not AT the
front sight.
Will had an interesting exercise for us,

putting a small scratch on our front
sight, and then getting us to shoot
focusing on the scratch. Very, very hard
and made a few of us realise we need
prescription glasses. Maybe Will has
shares in Spec Savers!
Even after butchering our grips and
scratching our sights, it was an
informative and helpful weekend and
we're looking forward to having Will
back for stage 2.
But until then it’s practice, practice,
practice…….

For any shooters who would like to
visit us, you are welcome. The range is
at the Dooen Recreation Reserve –
which also has the Motorbike Club and
go cart club. It’s about 5 minutes out of
Horsham heading out towards Dooen
(or Warracknabeal and Mildura if you
go way too far!!). It’s on the right hand
side (heading out of town), with a small
sign on the highway and then the

yellow sign about 20m off the road at
the gate.
We meet every Saturday at 1pm,
rotating on an eight-week cycle, the 5
ISSF events, Service Pistol (Restricted &
Unrestricted), Action Pistol (Los
Alamitos & Plates only). Also every
Wednesday night about 7pm for Air
Pistol.
We currently have in a grant
application to get lighting to our 50m
range and expect to hear in September
whether we were successful. Outdoor
lighting was on the agenda at the Club
about 20 years ago so
it will be really
exciting when it
finally goes ahead;
having power will be an additional
benefit, as we have a really really really
old generator that is starting to break
down a little bit more often than we
would like (not really good for those
who travel 1hr to get to Air Pistol). We
are steadily heading towards running
our own Open and showing off what
Horsham region has to offer, both for
shooting and otherwise.

You don't have to be a ‘dog person’ to truly
appreciate this -
I pulled into the crowded parking lot at the local shopping centre and rolled
down the car windows to make sure my Labrador Retriever pup had fresh
air. She was stretched full-out on the back seat and I wanted to impress upon her
that she must remain there. I walked to the kerb backward, pointing my finger at
the car and saying emphatically, "Now you stay. Do you hear me?"
"Stay! Stay!"
The driver of a nearby car, a pretty young blonde, gave me a strange look and
said, "Why don't you just put the handbrake on?" (thanks to G. Horton)

This weekend gone was the WA 1500 &
Service Vic Titles and was a very good
presentation from Mildura Pistol Club,
Organized and well run resulting in a
good week end for the shooters and all
involved. Mildura will be hosts to the
ISSF State Championships and it
should be a great comp for all. Our

Judges Corners By Peter Davis, National Judge A
T here has been some conjecture as
to when a random spot check can
be made of a shooters pistol,
ammunition (where required) or any
other equipment they may be using for
that event.
Let’s start by saying that at an open
competition a shooter must present his/
her pistol and equipment to equipment
control prior to the start of the match.
Once a shooter has been through
equipment control he/she must not
alter anything, if they do they must re-
present at equipment control to be
rechecked.
As per the Pistol Australia General
technical rules:-
5.2.8. The Jury has the right to examine
the pistols, equipment, positions, etc. of
shooters at any time, even during the
competition. During the competition,
approach should not be made while the
shooter is firing a shot or a series of
shots. Immediate action must be taken
when a matter of safety is involved.
The Jury at National Championships is
made up of several Judges, however
any other competition this maybe only
one Judge.
What this means is that a Judge or, in
the absence of a Judge, a range officer
could do a random spot check on a
shooter and his equipment. This could
also mean that in the matches that
r e q u i r e a m m u n i t i o n t o b e
chronographed that this could be done
during the competition, although the
norm, is for this to be done after the
match is completed.
The above rule is
extracted out of the
PA GTR’s which can
be found on the
NRC web site and
down loaded.

The Tri State is the highlight of the
junior training calendar bringing
together junior pistol shooters from

bonding and friendly competition. The
Tri State is now in its 32nd year and its
great to see former Tri State

team as Alan Wattz (Coach)
interrupted the socialising for an
afternoon of training. It wasn’t long
before South Australia and NSW joined
in.
After an intense training session our
hosts organised for the Juniors to take a
tour of the facilities and workings of the
Westpac Rescue Chopper base, located
next door to the Club. After viewing the
Helic opter , c ontrol room and
equipment it was back to the club for a
superior dinner and then off to the next

After a solid day of competition scores
were tallied and after twelve years of
NSW dominating we congratulate
South Australia on their victory
followed closely by NSW and then
Victoria.
Thanks to all involved in running this
event. It is valuable light-hearted
opportunity for the future of our sport
to meet other junior shooters with the
same passion and I am sure life long
friendships have been made. Everyone
had a positive attitude and this made
the weekend a great experience for all.
The families and pistol clubs of the
attending juniors should be very proud
of these athletes.
With the 33rd Tri State competition to be
held over the Queens Birthday
weekend in South Australia I
encourage all junior shooter to get
involved. Paul Jenner.

Dear Editor
I ’ve only been shooting for a short
time and I love it. I wish I’d
discovered it earlier. It worries me that
the sport I have only just discovered is
subject of a Senate Enquiry. So I made a
submission. Here’s an edited version:
I was going to do some research and find
statistics on:-
♦ The number of hand guns that are
stolen from sporting shooters
♦ Where the guns come from that are used
in crimes
♦ the number of handguns owned by
sporting shooters that are used in crime
♦ Etc
But then I thought that lots of others are
probably doing the boring research and that
you would have those sort of statistics
anyway.
So what I want to do is tell my story.
I’m a girl from the suburbs and had no
contact with guns for the first 48 years of
my life. When I had young children, I
didn’t buy guns for them as I didn't want
to encourage “violence”. I was more in the
“anti gun” lobby and I still believe strongly
that there needs to be strong controls on
who can own guns, why, how they are
stored etc.
A couple of years ago I met my now fiancé
but, JJ was keen on guns He spoke about
guns and rifle shooting and pistol shooting.
I found this a worry as guns are violent and
what sort of person gets into guns so
much?
However, I went to the pistol club with JJ
and discovered that the people there were
“normal” (if there is such a thing!). I had a
go! I touched a gun! I shot a gun! I had
another go, and another! Pistol shooting is
such a fantastic sport and I'm hooked. I love
the discipline, the will power, the calming
affect that shooting has.
My son is almost 13 years old. He is
addicted to computer and X-box games,
especially the shooting ones. I worry for my
son. I want him to learn coping skills. I
want to get him off the Xbox where the
games are so realistic and he uses machine
guns to shoot people.
Letters To The Editor
‘Victorian Pistol News’ October 2014 17.
I’d much rather he learns to shoot a real
gun at paper targets. He has been coming to
pistol club with me. He has been having a
go at air pistol and even though he says it is
boring, he is starting to show pleasure
when he gets all the shots on the target, and
especially when he gets a bull eye.
He has also had a go using my .22 and
9mm semi autos which he enjoys a lot more
than the air pistol. And a sport needs to be
enjoyable.
Target shooters need to practice self control,
calm their breathing, look after their
equipment, be safe and learn to respect their
equipment.
I want my son to learn all these things. I
want him to learn to respect guns; to know
they are dangerous when used in the wrong
way; to learn how to treat them and use
them safely; to learn how to exercise the
discipline that is needed for precision target
shooting.
These are strengths that my son can learn
through pistol shooting. He can learn
determination and will power, self control
and respect for others. He can learn how to
set goals and to put into place steps to
achieve those goals.
Maybe one day I, or even better, my son
can emulate Daniel Repacholli or David
Chapman and win a medal for Australia at
the Commonwealth Games, at the World
Cup or at the Olympics.
Don’t penalise the responsible sporting
shooters just because irresponsible people
find illegal guns to commit crimes.
Over the last couple of years since taking
up pistol shooting I have noticed that the
sport tends to be male dominated. Maybe
this goes with the “red neck image” of guns
and shooting. But pistol shooting is such a
wonderful sport for females and youth. You
don’t need brawn; you need mental
discipline and dedication. I hope my son
will learn these skills and grow into a
responsible, compassionate adult and I’m
sure that pistol shooting will help him
develop those skills and make me a very
proud mum.

I t is with deep sorrow that Peninsula
Pistol Club marks the passing of John
Corrall after a short illness and stay in
hospital.
John was a mainstay of the Club, a regular
competitor in Club events, a holster
qualifier, coach and a very experienced
shooter. John was a very accomplished
gunsmith and was the walking
encyclopaedia on Smith and Wesson
revolvers and how to achieve the ultimate
in performance and accuracy.
Earlier in his life John formed a partnership
with Phil Blake to manufacture the Blacor
pistol many of these pistols are still in use in
competition today.
John started his interest in pistol shooting at
Melton Pistol Club in 1973 and I believe he
was one of the
foundation members
of the Club. He was
for many years Club
President.
John was also very
involved with the
VAPA Junior shooting
program combining his skills as coach and
communicator.
When John retired and purchased a caravan
park in Ararat he joined the Club in the
town. When he sold the park and
purchased a house in Bittern he joined
Peninsula. He will be deeply missed at the
Club.
Jack Pyne, Vice President, Peninsula Pistol
Club Inc
I t is with much shock that Peninsula
Pistol finds itself without a Club
Secretary after the sudden death of Bruce
Bassett, who died peacefully at home on
Tuesday night 2nd September.
Bruce has always been a keen hardworking
member of the Club. He took over the job
as secretary some twenty years ago, he has
always been the quiet achiever, whether it
was putting out regular newsletters to the
complete AGM mail out package.
Some years ago when Peninsula hosted the
Masters Games the organisers were so
i m p r e s s e d w i t h
Bruce’s computer
work that he had been
doing it for them ever
since. Bruce was also one of our band of
holster qualifiers also another major time
commitment.
Bruce will be greatly missed by all members
of the Club, and many members of the
committee are going to find that their
workload is about to increase.

W ell Mountain District won the
lottery and was awarded the
postal finals for Service and WA1500—
a total of six matches.
Now without being unfair there were a
few people nervous about Mountain
District’s range. In August it has been
known to be a bit cool and even the odd
shower of rain (some would say I am
the master of understatement).
Saturday morning dawns a little foggy
but by 8.15am the fog had lifted and the
sun was on its way and a few Mountain
District members breathed a collective
sigh of relief because good weather
helps to make a good shoot. As the first
detail is scheduled for 9.00am and there
is very little to do to make the range
ready, only put up the targets start the
compressor and get the squadding lists
on the board. The main setup had been
done the day before by a couple of
dedicated members.
With the competitors starting to roll in
teams required one member from each
team for the first detail in Service 25

1500 Pistol. This kept the 50 yard range
busy while over on the 25 yard range
things were racing with some creative
squadding. It was down to the second
last detail when one particular
competitor had all sorts of issues in the
48 shot match—pulling one shot out of
the scoring area costing his team first
place (bugger).
The spectators were treated to some
great shooting across the teams. My
favourite was probably Ralph Motton
doing it again, putting a pretty

WA1500 pistol scores were as follows

The 48 shot match was hotly contended

‘Victorian Pistol News’ October 2014 27.
I t was my first visit to Shepparton
Pistol Club and I wasn't
disappointed. It was 13-14th September
and their 2014 ISSF Open. Not only was
there a great gathering of shooters from
near and far but Shepparton turned on
wonderful weather too.
After a 200km drive from Melbourne
on Saturday morning to shoot Standard
Pistol at 8:30am I thought next time I
might arrive the night before and start
the comp fresh. Lesson learned.
Next, going through gun check at 7:30
it was off to familiarise myself with the
layout of the club and ranges.
Shepparton club is situated about 7km
out of town with the clubhouse and
ranges all under one roof. They tell me
its great not getting wet going between
ranges but on this weekend it didn't
matter. The weather was fine. With
four 25metre ranges (room for 64
shooters) a 22-bay 50metre range and a
15 bay air range they were well setup
for the Open.
Standard Pistol was shot first on the
25m ranges while some Air Pistol was
also shot on the air
range. After lunch we
had Centrefire precision then duelling,
combined with Sports Pistol.
For those who don't shoot Opens it is
an eye-opener to shoot five shots and
then have the range staff score and
patch targets while shooters relax
watching the scores being called. At
club level its often usual for 10 shots (or
more) to be shot before patching, but
not at Opens.
A highlight of attending Opens is

observing the higher grade shooters—
watch and learn. This Open had a
couple of shooters who had shot at the
highest international level and I
enjoyed seeing how they did it. The
proof is when the RO calls out
10,10,10,10,10 for 50 out of 50 more than
once. On the 50m range shooters walk
forward and change their own targets
which are scored in the scorers’ room.
After a good nights sleep at the local
caravan park it was back again for
Sunday morning to shoot Rapid Fire.
Others also shot Air and 50m Pistol.

More Quotes from Henry Ford:
“Coming together is the beginning. Keeping
together is progress. Working together is
success.”
“Quality means doing it right when no one is
looking.”
“Money is like an arm or leg- use it or lose it.”
“There is no person living who isn't capable of
doing more than they think they can do.”
“There are three things that grow more precious
with age; old wood to burn, old books to read,
and old friends to enjoy.”
“If you always do what you’ve always done,
you’ll always get what you’ve always got.”
I should mention that the range carpark
is a shooters’ delight—parking at the
door of the range is great when you
have left your ammo in the car!
Also, many families had set up
caravans and campers on the range
creating a fun holiday atmosphere.
After watching some great shooting it
was time for the presentations where
one club seemed to have more than
their fair share of success. Well done
Beaconsfield.
I should mention that shooters had
come from places like Outtrim,
Oakleigh, Yarra, Melton, Beaconsfield,
Warrnambool, Mid Murray,
Shepparton, Mountain District,
Mildura, Wagga Wagga, Echuca,
Benalla, Castlemaine, and more.
I did not shoot
my best but the
reason for
attending Opens
is to learn to
shoot in a
competitive
environment,
see some top
shooters (and
ask questions)
and make new
friends. So
from that respect it was a good
weekend. Thanks to Shepparton Pistol
Club and all those who made it a great
weekend. I will be back.
R.W.
Not all the range staff had two legs. Shame he didn't have muffs though.

I t was 7.00 am at Mildura PC with
the smell of bacon and eggs and
coffee wafting through the air. All was
well so far with the quiet hum of things
running smoothly under blue skies
with a slight chill in the air. Except for
a couple of small issues—like ‘they let
the South Australians in’ (ha ha).
Equipment control runs smoothly
thanks to skilled and dedicated judges
(and the fact that Service & WA1500
guns are pretty straight forward).
People in the first detail are given
priority and when you walk onto the
range it all just seems to have
happened. Ranges are ready to go; just
clip up targets, put your name stickers
on and wait for the range officer to get
the ball rolling. The
scores start coming and the scoring staff
get their chance to keep the punters
happy. The only slight issue is that for
the WA 1500 matches the competitors
need to remember that they score the
targets of the competitors next to them.
Once this was sorted and the shooters
were reminded things ran smoothly.
Some of the more experienced shooters
were on hand to help the newer
shooters with some of the scoring
issues—this also helped things run
smoothly.
By lunch time there was a wailing wall
up and running with some of the
competitors spending a bit of time

either smiling at how well they did
while others were lamenting what
might have been. One thing most of
them found out is that you cannot
change what you did.
Lunch time was well catered for with
nobody going hungry and the day was
done and dusted by 4.30pm. The day
had seen some of the funniest things
happening. Numerous people having
speed loading issues—not all
inexperienced shooters either. One was
a State team member (that didn’t get
loaded), some getting loaded and some
not, leaving big holes in their scores.
One holster ending up a little way
down the range which was funny for
the onlookers but not so for the
competitor and he copped plenty of
ribbing for it. This highlights the
requirement to buy top equipment or
be prepared to modify what you have
or cop the flack.
Sunday dawned pretty much the same
as Saturday just a little bit warmer not
hot but warmer. From my point of

view the weather got hot but not the
scores. Having said that, scores of 880 +
were achieved in un-restricted and
there was plenty over 870. So it was
good for some, and congratulations to
those that were happy with their scores.
There were some PB’s shot and serious
grade competition with good hearted
banter about who was buying the
drinks. It was good to see some new
faces from Victoria, well new to me,
these shooters showed some potential
for the future. All in all a good time
was had and it was a good turnout
some 34 odd competitors travelled from

event that it was. Brett.

The Divorce
A judge was interviewing a woman regarding her pending divorce,
and asked, "What are the grounds for your divorce?"
She replied, "About four acres and a nice little home in the middle of the
property with a stream running by."
"No," he said, "I mean what is the foundation of this case?"
"It is made of concrete, brick and mortar," she responded.
"I mean," he continued, "What are your relations like?"
"I have an aunt and uncle living here in town, and so do my husband's parents."
The judge said, "Do you have a real grudge?"
"No," she replied, "We have a two-car carport and have never really needed one."
"Please," he tried again, "is there any infidelity in your marriage?"
"Yes, both my son and daughter have stereo sets. We don't necessarily like the
music, but the answer to your questions is yes."
"Ma'am, does your husband ever beat you up?"
"Yes," she responded, "about twice a week he gets up earlier than I do."
Finally, in frustration, the judge asked, "Lady, why do you want a divorce?"
"Oh, I don't want a divorce," she replied.
"I've never wanted a divorce. My husband does.
He said he can't communicate with me."
