Are you looking for a way to get involved at PPS? Our PTSA coordinates volunteers to help our staff and teachers at Phillips Prep. One area staffed by parent and grandparent volunteers is our first aid room. Coverage is needed for two shifts a day Monday – Friday. First shift is 8-11 am and second shift is 11-2. No experience is necessary to volunteer. If you want to try it out we offer a ‘SHADOW SHIFT’ with another volunteer. It provides information and hands on experience. Please contact our volunteer coordinator, Mrs. Angela Stauter at [email protected] or check out www.phillipsprep.com/ptsa webpage for our PTSA email address.
Do you have a favorite recipe that isn’t a family secret? Would you share it with us please? The PTSA is planning a cookbook and continues to collect interesting and tasty recipes. Please send your recipes to our email at [email protected]

Partner in Spotlight The Crichton Optimist Club "Friend of Youth," was formed in 1953, and since that time has made
the lives of many thousands of young people better in dozens of ways. A non-profit civic club, non-
political, it is an affiliate of Optimist International, with the purpose of being "Friend of Youth" One
of the programs the Crichton Optimist Club facilitates is the Football Player of the Week. Since
1956, the Crichton Optimist has honored local high school players of the week in Offensive,
Defensive and Special Teams Categories. The season ends with a banquet honoring Academic stars,
Offensive, Defensive, Special Teams, and Coach and Team of the Year for our local high school
teams. We are so proud of these young men, and where their careers took them on life's journey.
The Crichton Optimist also holds a watermelon cutting at a local Boys & Girls Club in the month of
July. We have been a long-time supporter of the Adopt-a-School program, with Phillips Preparatory
being our last adopted school when Woodcock Elementary was closed. We are proud to honor the
Student of the Month at a luncheon and the 6th Grade Citizen of the Year during Honors Day. This
club also honors the Deputy and Corrections Officer of the Month of the Mobile County Sheriff's
Department with a luncheon each month. This is just a bit of what this group of local Mobile
business men and women has contributed over the past 57 years. We are fortunate to have current
club members with over 50 years of service to the Crichton Optimist Club of Mobile. The main
fundraiser for the Crichton Optimist is a Spring Festival & Silent Auction. The 2013 event will be
held April 26, St. Dominic's Parish Hall, Tickets are $50 for Dinner for 2 and chance of $5,000
drawing. Please call Cindy Campbell, Club President at 422-7740 for more details. Meetings are
held each Wednesday, Noon, at Admiral Semmes Hotel, Cove Room. We invite anyone interested to

The Phillips Preparatory School Band recently participated in Mobile County Honor Band auditions.
For this event, students had to perform six scales from memory, two prepared pieces, and a piece of
sight-reading. They competed against all of the other middle schools in Mobile County. We are
pleased to announce that for ten years in a row, PPS has had more kids than any other school make
the Mobile County Honor Band! A total of 90 students from Phillips made it.
The people who made Honor Band are divided into three bands. The Red Band has the top scores, the
White Band has the next set of scores below that, and the rest of the students who make it, go to the
Blue Band. The majority of the people who try out do not make it at all, so it is truly an honor to be
included in any of the three bands!
Phillips students make up 22% of the Blue Band, 39% of the White Band, and a whopping 44% of the
top band (Red)!!! That means that 34% of the students who made the Honor Band this year are from
Phillips! Way to go, band students! We are so proud of you.
We also had 8 students from our school earn 1st chair in the county on their instrument.
Flute: Josselyn Vierya
Clarinet: Anna Wood
Bass Clarinet: Asia Hope
French Horn: Lauren Danzey
Trombone: Stephen Wood
Euphonium: Nathan Lunsford
Mallets: Austin Lowery
Timpani: Ryan Bailey
We had a total of 90 students make it this year! Congratulations to all of you and thank you so much
for doing such an outstanding job of representing our school.
The students who made it participated in Mobile County Honor Band rehearsals and concert. The
rehearsals were during the school day on March 25 & 26 at Baker and the concert was at the Mitchell
Center on the 26th. Way to go, band!

Attention 8th Grade Parents:
This year is flying by with graduation quickly approaching. To celebrate your 8th grader’s
graduation we are planning a special honors program and end of the year celebration. This is
where we need your help with the two projects below.
Project #1 Baby Pictures
We would like to showcase each student during the honors program with a baby or very young
picture of them (before elementary school) that captures their personality. The video looks
best if some of these pictures are candids and not all yearly school portraits. Please label the
back of each picture with your child’s name (lastname, firstname).
Project #2 Memory Pictures
We would like to compile an 8th grade memory video for the students. Watching the video
together at the end of the school year is a real treat. Your help is needed to ensure everyone is
adequately represented in the video. We need your pictures! You can submit group or
individual photos, but please make sure all the students in the picture are PPS students.
Pictures can come from their 6th, 7th, or 8th grade years. Again, candid pictures are
recommended. Please label the back of each picture with your child’s name (lastname,
firstname).
Ways to Submit Pictures
Digital submission (preferred) – email the pictures to: [email protected] as
an attached jpeg file. Make sure the pictures are saved with the highest available quality
and labeled with your child’s name (lastname, firstname).
Regular submission – label the back of each picture, place all pictures in the provided
manila envelope (will be sent home this week), and turn in the envelope to your
language arts teacher or the library. All photos will be returned after usage.
ALL PHOTOS ARE DUE NO LATER THAN APRIL 12TH. PLEAE HELP YOUR CHILD TO
BE INCLUDED IN THE MEMORIES.

Summer Program for Academically Talented Youth
Grades 7, 8, 9, and 10
July 7-26, 2013
Sponsored by Forrest General Hospital, Southern Miss Alumni Association,
and Regions Bank
The University of Southern Mississippi, through a cooperative effort with the
Duke University Talent Identification Program, is pleased to offer the three
week residential Summer Program for Academically Talented Youth, designed
for very bright students who are currently enrolled in grades 7, 8, 9 and 10.
The University of Southern Mississippi assumes full responsibility for the
instruction, administration and outcome of this program. The Summer
Program is designed to provide a balance of educational, cultural and
recreational experiences. Upon completion of the program parents will be
sent a detailed grade report to forward to the student’s school. At the
discretion of school administrators, the student may receive school credit
and/or appropriate placement for course work completed during the three-
week program. The program will be held on the beautiful campus of Southern
Miss in Hattiesburg, located in south central Mississippi, approximately 100
miles from Jackson, Mississippi; Mobile, Alabama; and New Orleans, Louisiana.
It is important that students select classes in which they are interested and to
which their best efforts will be given for three weeks. If the first choice is not
available, placement will be in the next available choice.
Academic Courses
Classes, taught by outstanding teachers, meet six hours each weekday and
three hours on Saturday. Students participate in quality learning experiences
that allow them to progress at a rate and a level appropriate for high ability
students. Each class is limited in enrollment. Students select one of the
following courses, each of which is offered in a fast paced, challenging format.
SAT or ACT (taken in 7th grade) eligibility requirements are noted after each
course description. Please see the downloadable application at the bottom
of this page for classes offered this summer.
Residential Accommodations
The residential component is planned to be an integral part of the learning
experience. The residential hall provides an equally comfortable environment
for academic activities and leisure time. Students live in an air conditioned
dormitory a short walking distance from the dining hall, campus resources
(such as the library) and campus recreational facilities. Residential counselors
supervise students when they are not in class. Approximately six hours each
weekday and three hours on Saturday mornings will be devoted toward group
classroom studies, with one hour per evening provided for individual study.
Cultural and recreational activities will be planned as well. There are many
opportunities for students to enjoy getting acquainted with other young
people of similar abilities and interests. www.usm.edu/karnes-gifted
