PINER HIGH’S FIRST SCHOOL YEAR ‘66/’67By Robert (Bob) ZeniTime is that relentless something that does not wait sometimes for reflection. But...let’s change that dynamic and take ourselves back to September, 1966...some fifty years ago. A nice bit of history was made on that day when 725 students took to their desks at Piner High School as the Santa Rosa School District threw the doors open to them as the first members of the third and new-est high school in the district. The west side of Santa Rosa was begin-ning to feel the effects of a frenzy of new home building. For the first few years, there was really nothing but open fields around the school site itself. At the intersection of Guern-eville and Fulton Roads were a few businesses, with Garwood’s as its an-chor. Gradually, homes began to be built, to the east off Peterson Lane, then to the north and south of the school. The youth park to the west later provided Santa Rosa with its first skateboard facility.

Santa Rosa and Montgomery High School were feeling the effects of the student population growth in other parts of the sprawling school district. It is never easy to open a new school, primarily because you are changing school attendance patterns, and in the case of Santa Rosa High, chang-ing patterns of family history with that school.

Freshmen, sophomores, and juniors living in the area that ran roughly from Wright Road in the south, Stony Point Road in the east, Mark West in the north, and the Laguna in the west formed the first geographic boundar-ies of the new Piner campus.

The first yearbook “Prospectus ‘67” really got it right when the student

editor stated,”Piner’s first year student leaders did a remark-able job in setting traditions where none had been. Stu-dent body officers, activities’ commissioners, cheer and song leaders are to be com-mended for their great efforts in building pride in Santa Ro-sa’s newest high school.” The story went on to state that “the first year saw the formation of the student senate and other governmental agencies, the beginnings of what promises to be an outstanding athletic program, an award-winning student newspaper founded, and many other gains in cur-riculum and activities.”

So who were these pioneering Piner Prospectors? The junior (and upper class) elected Rich Velasquez as president, Sue DuMelle as Vice President, Susie Wellington as treasurer, and Marsha Curtis as class secretary. They led the class into their senior year in 1967-68 and became the very first class to gradu-ate from Piner in June, 1968.

The new sophomore class selected Craig Owen as president, Robin London as Vice President, Gwynne Anderson as secretary, with Jackie Miller as treasurer. The freshmen class chose Tony Ciapusci as its president, Dan Rose, vice president, Marylou Knffin, secretary, and Terri Reep as class treasurer. PINER HIGH’S FIRST YEAR (Cont’d.)less” complete, but construction continued during the first months of the school year. One gymnasium was completed, the second one built many years later, however. The library, foreign language and science labs were state of the art for the time, thanks to federal funding for the projects. The school was the first in the district to have students entering class-rooms from outside corridors rather than indoor halls. The quad was an interesting mix of dirt and gravel for a couple of years. The spirit among students and faculty was great...and that is not the nostalgic side of my brain kicking in. There re-ally was a pioneering spirit...a happy combination of students, faculty, staff.

Let me take you down the memory trail. To those alums of a certain age...in addition to the administrators noted above, can you recall these pioneering staff members?... Bill Albright, Hazel Alexis, Charles Buff, Hector Buroker, Ron Caselli, Steve Casperson, Peggy Colgan, Dian Davis, Izzy Derkos, Bob Dodds, Ken Foote, Mike Gaddie, Marcia Hart, Joan Harvey, John Huntz-inger, Bob Jackson, Charles Juricich, Elmont Lane, Dick Latimer, Gene McKamey, Arnie Nielsen, Roz Peabody, Frank Rathman, Bill Rogers, Bert Scuri, Helen Sabsay, Stephanie Shaw, Craig Thompson, Jim Tonna, Kathy Trenchard, Jim Underhill, Mary Lee Varone, and Bob Wycoff. You can win the Golden Prospec-tor Award if you can remember what subjects they taught or which sports they coached. Happily, many of them are still in the community, and some even gather on a monthly basis for breakfast get togethers.

PROSPECTUS ‘67 was the first yearbook published at Piner. Joyce Walburn was its first editor-in-chief. Ron Caselli served as faculty advisor for the yearbook, as well as the NUGGET, the student newspaper, Joyce Cittoni, its editor. Rounding out the yearbook staff Terry Fountain, Steve Templeman, Mary Bursick, Sue Snider, Marlene Grant, Sylvia Lundberg, Cherie Jones, Kris van der Oudermeulen, Phil Nielsen, Melissa Jones, Vickie Gould, Barbara Laakso, Denise LaGrande, Jan Fields, Me-linda Brovelli and Cynthia Ogle. Assisting Joyce Cittoni with the newspaper were Craig Owen, Debbie Thomsen, Delores Vaughn, Marie Sieg, Sherri Adorni, Jan Cittoni, Kathy Denner, and Sandy Pickett.

Our first yearbook and several thereafter solicited ads from businesses in the community to help fund the publication costs. Try remembering these ad supporters and then try to figure out how many of them still remain in the community: Veale Volkswagen, Wells Fargo, The Tropical Reef, Redwood Empire Savings and Loan, Crossroads Texaco, Smith’s Shoes, Niles Buick, Big “B” Supermarket, Ralph Vesper Imported Cars, Vastine Studios, Rosenberg’s, Cooper’s Shell Service, Adri-enne’s, Summit Savings and Loan, Stamback’s Richfield Ser-vice, John Howell Photography, and finally Zumwalt Plymouth Center.

Since Piner’s start in 1966, two other high schools have joined the district, but Piner High remains a very special school in the memories of the thousands of students who went there.

The campus has matured; buildings and programs have been added. Several pioneering students have seen their own sons and daughters enter and graduate.

At its next open house, drop by. Perhaps, as you drive along Fulton Road, you may see a new look to the campus with its two story building now facing the street. Within the campus there is a second gym, a new planetarium, an observatory, computer labs, more classroom wings...still a fine educational place with an exceptional group of students, faculty, adminis-tration, and staff. GO PROSPECTORS!!!

(Mr. Zeni was Piner High’s first vice-principal for 23 years. He was an integral part of starting the Piner High Foundation and the Pin-er Athletic Hall of Fame, and later getting them both non-profits status. He is still currently serving on the Board of Directors for both organizations. Mr. Zeni truly has been a remarkable contribu-tor to the welfare of Piner, its students and its staff for over five de-cades. We thank him for taking on our request to write this article during this busy time of the year.)

GOODBYE AND THANK YOU G&G SUPERMARKET!

Marylou (Kniffen) Beltromi, her grandson, Tino, and her son, Christopher (taking the picture) sadly say goodbye to G&G Supermarket on the day it closed November 28, 2016. The G&G family recently sold the store to Safeway, who has agreed to hire all of G&G’s employees. The older family members of G&G who are in their late 60’s to early 80’s are retiring. G&G was in business for 53 years, starting off in a much smaller building on the same property. Marylou mused, “Four generations of shopping at G&G and now they are closed. I’m so sad. Our families were there from the very beginning in that little cubicle with the best meat market in town. The meat counter almost took up the whole store.” She went on to

The meat counter almost took up the whole store.” She went on to say, (the G&G family) gave such wonderful, beautiful, loving support of our high school and the community.” We couldn’t agree more. They have generously donated and supported not only Piner High School, but many other schools, organizations, and fundraisers throughout Sonoma County. G&G family members who attended or are attending Piner include Lee Gong (first graduating class ’68), Don Gong (class of ’69), Dorothy Gong (class of ’71), their children and other family members.

Congratulations to Piner’s Ross Thorsen for being selected this year’s student School Board member 2016-2017.

He and Laurie lived and served in numerous countries including The Marshall Islands, Cameroon, Guyana, Iraq, Central African Republic, etc. He retired in 2015, but was consulting with the United Na-tions on rehabilitating health care centers that had been devastated by the Ebola outbreak in 2014-2015. Ray’s family received condolenc-es from people in Cairo, Abu Dhabi, Kinshasa DRC and across the U.S.A. stating what a posi-tive attitude he always had, how well he knew his craft, and what a pleasure it was to work with him. Condolences can be sent to: The Meininger Family, 905 N.Hidden Valley Cir, Durango, CO, 81301. He left us too soon, but it appears he had quite an impact on the world while he was here. Our condolences go out to his family.
