BILLIE SUE (WRENN) SION By Lee Torliatt

Sue Sion began traveling the world early in life. First, she did it with books and then she joined a world that, in many respects, was moving from one crisis to another.

She became an excellent educator, and if she was being graded for her effort, she would have quite a few A Pluses on her report card.

Although she moved around over the years, she still considers herself a proud member of the Piner High School community.

Sue was born in San Angelo, Texas, where, being black, she attended “separate but unequal” schools. From first grade through her graduation from Jack Yates High School, in Houston, she attended segregated schools. It was hardly a pleasant life, but right across the street from her home in San Angelo, there was a one-room library for African-Americans. Sue spent many hours reading in the library or taking books home.

She and other blacks were banned from numerous facilities and were allowed in parks only once a year, on the Juneteenth holiday, commemorating June 19, 1865, when the slaves in Texas learned of their freedom—two years after President Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation.

Sue spent many hours working in the fields, “pulling” cotton to help offset family expenses. She received a scholarship and graduated from New Mexico

Highlands University in Las Vegas, New Mexico.

After earning a teaching credential in Colorado, she and her husband, who was in the Army, went to Germany where she taught mainly in two Army Education Centers. She also had a chance to visit several countries in Europe.

When her husband was reassigned to the base at Two Rock in 1967, Sue joined the business department at Piner High School. Although generally welcomed, Sue said she and her husband ran into some difficulty finding a house. One woman told them she had “polled the neighborhood” and “they were not wanted.”

While teaching at Piner, she almost always received positive reinforcement from her colleagues in the educational world. Some of the names include her first department chairman, Bob Wycoff, District administrators Mitchell Soso and Jack Landis, Piner vice-principal Bob Zeni, Piner principal Jack Hayes, and teacher/administrator

Ron Washburn. Sue said Washburn strongly encouraged her to apply for open administrative posts that were becoming available as people retired. After taking numerous classes at Sonoma State College, the University of San Francisco, and St. Mary’s College in Moraga, she went into administration. Her first administrative job was at Santa Rosa Junior High in 1985. Junior highs are now called middle schools.

She noted that after retirement, she has been an interim administrator at every middle school, every high school, and one elementary school within the Santa Rosa City School District. It’s a path any scholar of geography would admire.

When Sue arrived in Santa Rosa, there was a good deal of turmoil in the world, especially in the areas of war in Vietnam and racial discrimination.

While most of her hours have been dedicated to education, Sue also has embarked on and enjoyed something of a “career” in the theater.

She participated for two years in the Lamplight Tours and one year in the Women’s History Tour at the Santa Rosa Rural Cemetery.

In her first vignette, she said, “I played one of two wives of Ed Potter, who was a “white washer” (or painter) in Santa Rosa in 1876. Both of Potter’s wives were in

heaven arguing over which wife he was going to spend his life with when he went to heaven.

“In the second vignette, I played the wife of Henry (Shiner) Davis, who was a ‘boot black’ in Santa Rosa in 1870. He often shared his critical opinions in the editorial section of the newspaper the Democrat. While (he and his family) were saying their prayers one night, two white boys threw rocks through the windows

because they didn’t want the Davis family living

near them.” Actress Sion said the performance encouraged one couple to buy a grave marker for ‘Shiner.’

The third vignette involved a black barber and former slave named John Richards. He opened several barber shops, got wealthy, and “purchased 130 acres in South Santa Rosa in the area now known as South Park. His home served as a refuge for a number of freed, homeless slaves after the Civil War.” His funeral was one of the largest in Sonoma County at that time.

SUE SION continued from page 1

Sue is currently involved with many organizations, including the NAACP, the Rites of Passage educational program for youth, Luther Burbank Home and Gardens, Assn. of School Administrators and enough others to fill the Yellow Pages of the Phone Book (remember those?)

Awards include: Professional Woman of the Decade by the National Assn. of Negro Business and Professional Women’s Clubs, and numerous educator awards. The walls of her house sag with evidence of her accomplishments.

Through all of her very busy life, she has maintained a fond relationship with her three children, Michael, Mark and Monique. She and Monique have taken numerous long-distance trips together, partly, she says with a smile, because Monique has some good connections with friends in the airline business. Their trip to Buenos Aires was one of her favorite trips.

[Editor’s note: Lee Torliatt is a retired Piner High School Teacher who has written several books, and has been the long time editor of the Sonoma County Historical Society’s quarterly newsletter. He has written all of the Piner High Athletic Hall of Fame inductee’s bios for the last 10 years, and kindly accepts requests to periodically write articles for the Alumni Newsletter.]

After winning their league championship the Piner Cross Country Varsity Boys team and Cynthia Rosales participated in the 2015 Cross Country NCS (North Coast Sectional) and State Championships. At NCS Piner Varsity Boys placed 3rd and Cynthia Rosales placed 5th in Division 3 (bottom two photos). The Varsity Boys were Eduardo Calderon, Aidan Carpenter, Jacob Hayes, Nathan Hayes, Brian Luong, Harris Nguyen and Jonny Vargas. At the State Meet, 5 of 7 Var-sity Boys and Cynthia Rosales each had personal records in their races. GREAT job to everyone on the Piner XC team!

Congratulations to the Piner Cross Country Teams for their great showings at the SCL Championship. The Varsity Boys won their 6th consecutive pennant! Cynthia Rosales was 1st in the Varsity Girls race and is now one of only 4 Piner XC Girls who hold the title of Girls SCL Champion! Congratula-tions to Kassia Chagnon who placed 4th and ran the 3rd fasted time for a Piner girl on the Spring Lake Course. JV Boys also had a great season. Piner JV Boys were undefeat-ed in league and won the JV Boys race at SCL Finals. Seana Smith placed 5th in the JV Girls race.

HAVE YOU JOINED THE PINER HIGH

FOUNDATION YET? If you haven’t joined or renewed your Foundation membership for this school year it’s not too late. Your membership and donations helps provide our teachers with classroom equipment and supplies that enhances the learning experiences for our students, along with defray-ing the cost of printing and mailing the newsletter. A cost that is also shared with the Piner Hall of Fame. To renew or join the Foundation go to page 7.

Thank you to those who have already renewed their membership or recently joined the Foundation for this school year. An extra thank you to those who made an additional donation over their membership dues: they include Les-lie Jenkins Conant; Jill Smith Thach, Margaret Hayne Nelson, Denise Rehe, Marcia Thompson Richter, and new Foundation member Jackie Stevens Callaghan. We want to extend a warm welcome to our other new Foundation members Pete and Jill McCormick and Ursula Juricich.

Thank you also to Jason Stevenson (via United Way), and Tony Walls (via P.G. & E’s giving program) for your near month-ly donations to the Foundation. And thank you Edna Gaddie for your dona-tion in memory of Mr. Jim MacDonald, who was one of the original members of the Piner Boosters Club, and also the father of slain police officer and Piner graduate-- Jimmy MacDonald.

We apologize if we inadvertently left any-one’s name off the membership and do-nation list.

YES, WE ARE HAVING OUR

ANNUAL CRAB/PASTA FEED THIS YEAR.

As our Crab Feed Flier states (refer to page 2), we will be having our 10th annual Crab Feed on February 13, 2016, at the Friedman’s Event Cen-ter. This fundraiser benefits the Piner Foundation, Piner Hall of Fame and Piner Boosters. This fun event comes close to selling out every year so get your tickets early. They are available at G&G Supermarket’s Customer Ser-vice or at the Booster’s concessions during games. We are hoping the lo-cal crab season will be in full swing for our local fisherman by then, but if not, we will be getting our crab from states further north of us. As usual we

will have an abundance of silent auction and raffle items. Come get some great deals, along with a very filling meal. And don’t miss out on our fabulous dessert auction, with items by culinary art students, our parents and some commercial items.

WHAT HAVE YOU BEEN UP TO?

Randy Nunes and Cathy Slack, classes of ’71 & ’78, went on KSRO’s Alaskan Cruise together in September of this year, which was the first cruise for ei-ther of them. It was a 7 day trip that started with their flight out of Santa Rosa up to Seattle. From there they boarded Holland America’s Wester-dam Cruise Ship stopping in Juneau, Glacier Bay, Sitka, Ketchican, and Vancover Island, before disembark-ing back in Seattle. They both agreed it was an incredible trip with excel-lent service, delicious food, and sev-eral fun cooking demonstrations by celebrity chef John Ash. One of the personal demonstrations by Ash to the 35 people from the Santa Rosa are was a five wine and food tasting event. The wine was donated by Hook and Ladder Winery owner’s Cecil and Christine DeLoach, former owners of DeLoach Winery. Their son, Mike De-loach (Class of ’78) and his wife, Lori, oversee the Hook and Ladder Winery.

If you would like to tell us what you have been up to, send your story to Piner High Foundation, 1700 Fulton Rd., San-ta Rosa, CA 95403.

STEM (Science, Technology, Engi-neering and Math) Update: : Nicole Gregorio was selected from a compet-itive field of students from around the county for the Summer High School Internship Program (SHIP) at Sonoma State this past summer. Here is what she has to say about it, “Last summer I was lucky to be picked as one of SSU’s high school interns. I was accepted to a biochemistry project where I was paired with another student and an SSU professor to conduct research. Our project involved research on a protein called BAFF-R, which is of

high interest in targeted therapies for lymphoma. In lab we used E. coli to pro-duce this protein and analyzed samples for their content of BAFF-R. Not only was I able to learn skills like pouring and running SDS-PAGE, which is used to separate proteins by size, but I also learned how to troubleshoot failed experiments, which are frequent in research. Though research can be frustrating because results are often hard to come by, it is a very rewarding experience which has allowed me to grow as a student and a person. This internship prepared me for a career in science research, which I could not have received in a high school class alone.” Although Nicole has already obtained her STEM certificate level 3 award for her rocket design last year... she plans to continue her commitment to the certificate by obtaining all levels possible for the STEM prospect award.

2015 Piner Homecoming Floats. Congratulations to the Latino Club for being this year’s Homecoming Float Winner! Thank you to the Classes, the French Club and the Yearbook Club for your participation and helping to make Piner’s Homecom-ing halftime show fabulous!

PINER FOUNDATION IS GETTING A WEB-

SITEThe Piner High Foundation is having a website built, which should be com-pleted by the end of January 2016. This should make it easier to join the Foundation, renew your membership, and make donations in memory of someone, to honor a teacher, to cel-ebrate a graduation, etc. You will also be able to read the Alumni Newslet-ters on-line. Look for the website in January under www.pinerhighfoun-dation.org.

LET’S GET THOSE FIELD LIGHTS FOR

PINER! The Santa Rosa School Board has sent out a new request proposal to get es-timates for the cost of installing Field Lights at our Jim Underhill Stadium. We have already paid for our EIR re-port, but must now pay for our lights, new sound system, and tree barriers around the field. The Piner Hall of Fame Committee was recently joined by the Piner Boosters in efforts to get night games for our Piner students. See our GoFundMe project at www.gofundme.com. Then type in Piner High School or Piner-Field-Lights and see who has donated. Please pass the word. Donations are tax deductible. For further information you can call 571-7420.

Statistics verify that students in-volved in sports have very good school attendance.

ASB Conference: High school students from all of over Sonoma County participated in a Leadership Conference hosted by our very own Piner High ASB class, led by new advisor, Ms. Hollman. Schools that attended the conference included: Analy, Casa Grande, Cardinal Newman, Elsie Allen, Montgomery, Rancho Cotate, Roseland, Santa Rosa, Technology, Ukiah, and Windsor. This 350+ people event brought students together to show their spirit and demonstrate their leadership skills. The conference featured games, a motivational message about change by Johan Khalilian, spontaneous dancing, and a powerful amount of noise and spirit. Piner’s ASB class would like to thank all of the schools that attended for being so dedicated and spirited at the event. Also, we want to give special thanks to Jostens for helping to coordinate the event.

Piner’s Tiffany Le played with Lang Lang, a Chinese con-cert pianist who has performed with leading orchestras in Europe, the United States and his native China, at the Green Music Center on October 4th. Only a select few students were chosen to play piano with Lang Lang.

Congratulations to Patty Michiels! Fellow teacher Judy Barcelon stated, “Patty Michiels was honored as the Piner High Teacher of the Year nominee for the California League of High Schools. Patty has dedicated 31 years of her life to sharing her passion for Spanish culture and language to our students be it Spanish for Spanish speakers or AP[Advanced

Placement] Spanish. She excels at any level. Principal Tim Zalunardo introduced Patty acknowledging her dedication to the profes-sion and how she serves as a cornerstone to the Piner High family. He captured perfectly her zest for classroom engagement, that when one opens the door to her classroom you can see her radiance that illuminates the minds of her students as well as hear their exuberance in the delightful singing that emanates. Ms. Michaels boldly gave her acceptance speech in Spanish at first. Demonstrating her passion for the subject and as her face lit up with such exuberance I found myself as enchanted as her students must feel. Besides all that fanfare, Patty is an icon and role model to the teachers at Piner. She has created such opportunities as cross cultural teaching with her students

and elementary schools for over 15 years. She has kept up on technology, curriculum integration and being willing to try and learn new strategies. A lifelong learner, teacher ad-vocate and perpetual Prospector, Patty well deserves this recognition and shall continue to reign at Piner High.
