Ragtime had its great names, itstalented lesser names and many whoexploited the fashion. This secondvolume of ragtime performancesfrom pianola rolls made between1895 and 1916 features some of thefinest of the lesser names of ragtime. With the exception of ragtimepioneer, James Scott, thesecomposers were white although, likeblues and jazz, ragtime was basicallya negro music.

Pianola roll manufacturers werenotorious for marking incorrectspeeds on their rolls which for a longtime gave rise to very up-tempoperformances of what are reallysedate and melodic pieces. The mid20th c. revival of ragtime tended toput this right and the music on thisrecording, originally recorded fromrolls in 1967, can now be seen asbeing at an appropriate speed.

The rolls were played on anOrchestrelle player attachment for65 and 88 note rolls which was madearound 1905. The first known playeris thought to be the 1863 Furneaux‘Pianista’. As with the Orchestrellethis operated by striking the keys ofan ordinary piano. The maindifference was that it was operatedby a handle rather than by footoperated bellows. Early rolls were 58and later 65 note. 88 notes becamestandard in the 1900s although theearlier sizes continued to be made. This record mainly features 65 noterolls.

HENRY LODG E was a competentrag composer who wrote half adozen good rags, but “TemptationRag” was his finest.

PAUL PRATT and MAYAUFDERHEIDE. Indianapolis was

a particularly staunch stronghold ofwhite ragtime. The earliest publishedthere were by May Aufderheide andPaul Pratt. May’s father was a loanbroker and took on music publishingas a sideline to handle the rags ofthese two. Pratt was an excellentpianist who later travelled withroadshows.

ABE HOLZMANN was a Germanclassical composer famed in his dayfor writing ‘darky dances’. ‘SmokeyMokes’, his most famouscomposition, gained muchfavourable comment after beingperformed by J. P. Sousa.

CHARLES HUNTER of Nashville,Tennessee was a blind, white pioneerof ragtime who was close to the folkroots of the music.

GEORGE BOTSFORD was born inSioux Falls, South Dakota in 1874.He was a white pioneer and many ofthe earlier rags have much of thefolkmelodic tradition. He moved intoTin Pan Alley later.

ARTHUR PRYOR was thetrombonist in his own band and ‘ACoon Band Contest’ was written forbrass band rather than piano.
