Using Photoshop
The Front Cover
For the background of my front
cover I took a photo of a wall
on a building. To conform to my
black and white colour scheme
I changed the colour of the
image to dark grey using levels
on Photoshop
Using the ‘quick selection
tool’ I removed the
background from this
image. I did this so that
the image of the model
can be placed over the
background that I
previously made.
Quick Selection tool
I then dragged the layer of my main image onto
the background.
As the colour scheme of my magazine will be
black and white I used levels on image
adjustments to change the colour to black and
white.
Using the clone
stamp tool I
covered up some
of the blemishes my
model had on his
face. This made the
image look more
appealing I used the same tool to
fill in the gaps in his hair.
Which made the image
look more professional
I noticed that there was
a faint white line
around my main image
which made it obvious I
had pasted the image
onto the background.
So I used effects and a
drop shadow tool to go
around the edges of
my image. This made it
blend into the
background.
I used the Horizontal type tool to
add all my cover lines and
masthead onto the page.
Contents page
I took a picture of the railings along a corridor to use
as my background for my contents page.
To match the colour scheme, similarly to the front
cover I changed the colouring of the background
to dark grey. However this time I adjusted the
saturation of the image instead of using levels.
Background - Hue/saturation
Quick selection
tool When creating my front
cover I found that the
quick selection tool was a
easy way to remove the
background. So I decided
to do the same thing for
the main image on my
contents page.
Brightness/Contrast
As a my contents page has a Monochrome scheme, I
decided to keep this image with colour. However I adjusted
the brightness and contrast to juxtapose the image from the
background.
The purpose of having a female on the contents
page was to challenge this male-dominate genre.
So to emphasise my models femininity I used the
eraser tool to alter her hips, giving her curves to
highlight her sexuality.
I then used the horizontal tool to add my text to
the page. To brighten up the page I chose
different colours for my cover lines using colour
pick (Foreground colour)
Foreground Colour
Double-page spread
I took a picture of 3 slanted cross’ which were on the wall of a
chapel, to use for the background of my double page spread.
To conform to my colour scheme, I darkened the image.
However this time I used curves and exposure to adjust certain
parts of the image, making areas lighter than others while
fading them together.
On this page I decided to
use more than one image. So again I used
the same technique to
remove the background
off all 3 images
Quick selection tool
Again I used both
brightness/contrast to brighten
the image and the clone clamp tool to fill in the gaps in my models
hair. This was to make the quality
of the image better.
Editing the images
I lowered the opacity on 2 of the images. I did this so that
when I insert the article, the text will be clearer to see and
read and also to create a different style compared to my front
cover and contents page.
Lastly I added my text using the horizontal
type tool and changed the colour using the
colour picker as I found it easy to use from
the previous times.
