No doubt, Photoshop is one of the best known software applications in the
world with very powerful, clean, logical and easy to learn interface. No wonder
it has been in existence for over a decade.
Not minding the above benefits of Photoshop, we also should not forget that
Photoshop is a very intimidating software application for the novice. But don’t
worry, we will be teaching you the basics and how to keep moving forward.
GET YOUR PHOTOSHOP APPLICATION READY

Software application ready and installed because it will be very hard for you to
follow this tutorials without practicing as you read.
If you are not currently an Adobe Photoshop user, go to

30days trial download.
GET YOUR IMAGES/PICTURES READY
The use of images/pictures in tutorial is highly necessary; this is because
the adobe Photoshop tools provided will be used to work on those
pictures/images.
So get yourself as many photos of your choice in order to make this

Me & My Photoshop: Adobe Photoshop CS5 Basic Tutorial CEECEECOMPUTERS – http://www.ceeceecomputers.com Contact Us: [email protected] - +2347030445028 Page 3
Save those images in a folder assigning any name of your choice to the
folder.
LAUNCH ADOBE PHOTOSHOP
To launch the adobe Photoshop programme installed in your system;
Click on “Start menu” followed by “All Programs”, then click on
“Adobe Photoshop CS5”
OPENING A DOCUMENT/CREATION OF NEW WORKING LAYOUT/CANVAS
Remember you saved your pictures/images in a folder, now that your Adobe
Photoshop window is open, we are going to open a document i.e. one of the
images.
Like I said previously that images are the core stuffs in Adobe Photoshop
application because without the images, its tools will be considered useless. To
open an image from a folder;
Me & My Photoshop: Adobe Photoshop CS5 Basic Tutorial CEECEECOMPUTERS – http://www.ceeceecomputers.com Contact Us: [email protected] - +2347030445028 Page 4
1. Click on “File” Menu and a drop-down menu will appear, then click on
“Open”.
2. A dialog box entitled “Open” will appear which you will locate your
image and click on the open button beside the filename field.
Your screen should look like this when you are done;
Remember to create a new layer or duplicate the layer; it makes the layer editable.
I prefer to duplicate the layer, so that I can easily go back each time I make
mistake.
Below the settings panel by the right of the window, go to “layers” then you will
see that the background is locked which means that editing will not be possible on
that layer.
Right-click on the image followed by left-clicking on “Duplicate Layer” and a dialog
box entitled “Duplicate Layer” will appear. Then click on “OK”.
Me & My Photoshop: Adobe Photoshop CS5 Basic Tutorial CEECEECOMPUTERS – http://www.ceeceecomputers.com Contact Us: [email protected] - +2347030445028 Page 5
The background copy you are going to work on will appear and it will be highly
editable…
WORKING WITH THE TOOLS:
We are now going to know what each and every tool in the toolbar does i.e. its
function and how to use them.
If you are an Adobe product user, maybe you have used “Adobe illustrator or
InDesign”, you should have been familiar with the nature of the toolbar but if
you have not used any of Adobe products, I advise you keep in mind that in
this tutorial, we are going to try as much as possible to introduce all the
tools.
And I promise that the basic tools will be highly discussed.
TOOLBAR:
a. Marquee Tool:
This tool is used for selection of an object/image by drawing a rectangle or an
ellipse around it.
Me & My Photoshop: Adobe Photoshop CS5 Basic Tutorial CEECEECOMPUTERS – http://www.ceeceecomputers.com Contact Us: [email protected] - +2347030445028 Page 6
1. To select the Marquee Tool, click on the tool icon on the toolbar or
by pressing on the letter “M”.
2. After selecting the Marquee Tool, click and drag over the area of the
object/image you want to select (see image above)
In case you want to put the selected part of the image somewhere, after
selecting with the tool, click back on the “Move Tool” icon above the
marquee tool, then go back to the selected part of the image, click and hold
it in the middle of the selection and move the cursor a bit – you will notice
that as you move your mouse, so the selected part of the image moves.
Me & My Photoshop: Adobe Photoshop CS5 Basic Tutorial CEECEECOMPUTERS – http://www.ceeceecomputers.com Contact Us: [email protected] - +2347030445028 Page 7
From here, you will then copy the selection, move it, apply filters to it –
pretty much anything you can do in photoshop starts with a selection.
b. The Lasso Tool:
This is a free – form selection tool that allows you select an object /part of
an image by dragging around the area of the image you wish to select/copy.
Me & My Photoshop: Adobe Photoshop CS5 Basic Tutorial CEECEECOMPUTERS – http://www.ceeceecomputers.com Contact Us: [email protected] - +2347030445028 Page 8
1. To select the Lasso Tool, click on the icon on the toolbar or by
pressing on the letter “L”. The marquee tool and the lasso tool are
almost the same except that the Lasso Tool is a freehand tool while
Marquee Tool is not.
2. After selecting the tool, click and hold the mouse, then drag and draw
a selection around the part of the image to be selected. Then release
your hand from the mouse, it will autocomplete itself.
3. Copy (Ctrl + C) the selected image and go to the layout/canvas you
are working on and press Ctrl + V to paste the selected image.
SUB-TOOLS:
Lasso Tool is the tool selected by default but to have access to its sub-tools,
click on the icon and hold it for some seconds, a submenu box will appear
revealing all of its sub-tools.
Another way to select the sub-tools is by pressing “Shift + (Shortcut key of the
tool)” i.e. for Lasso tool press “Shift + L”.
Polygonal Tool: This tool selects an image or part of the image by drawing a
straight-edge border around it.
Magnetic Lasso Tool: This tool selects an image by drawing a border that snaps
to the edges of the defined area of the object, works the same way as the
regular/default lasso tool except that this tool attempts to detect edges for
you and automatically snap to them.
You should notice that as you move your mouse, the starting point still remains
pinned to the image and a dashed line extends towards the cursor. Clicking
Me & My Photoshop: Adobe Photoshop CS5 Basic Tutorial CEECEECOMPUTERS – http://www.ceeceecomputers.com Contact Us: [email protected] - +2347030445028 Page 9
again puts the next point pinned; it goes this way till your selection is
complete.
Note: Don’t single-click when you reach at your last click point, just make sure
you double-click. The polygon will then close automatically.
Press the “Esc” key anytime you want to cancel the selection in progress or
press “Ctrl + D”
c. The Magic Wand Tool:
Clicking any part of the image with this tool tells Adobe Photoshop to select
the spot clicked and anything around the image that is similar. This is a typical
quick selection tool.
1. To select the Magic Wand Tool, click on the icon on the toolbar or
by pressing on the letter “W”.
2. Try clicking on any part of your image with this tool, you will notice that
this tool automatically selects without you dragging it where it will
select, like how we used the Marquee and Lasso tool (see image above).
Me & My Photoshop: Adobe Photoshop CS5 Basic Tutorial CEECEECOMPUTERS – http://www.ceeceecomputers.com Contact Us: [email protected] - +2347030445028 Page 10
3. If the tool doesn’t select the part of image the way you wanted it to,
then you adjust its “tolerance” (see image above), increase it to 100%
and see how it will select the image this time. By doing this, you can
greatly control the selections of the magic wand tool.
Note: The more the “tolerance”, the more it selects...
d. The Crop Tool:
The crop tool is one of the most used tools in photoshop; it can be used to
improve the composition of your pictures/images.
With the crop tool, you can specify the exact size you want the crop tool to
give to your images or you can directly crop to any size you wish.
1. To select the Crop Tool, click on the icon on the toolbar or by
pressing on the letter “C”.

The eyedropper tool lets you click on any part of the canvas/image and sample
the colour at that exact point. The eyedropper will change your foreground
colour to whatever colour it sampled from your image or canvas.

Looking at this beautiful lady’s picture above, assuming I need the colour of
her lipstick and I need to work with that exact colour.
With the magic of the “Eye Dropper Tool”, we will get the exact colour of
her lipstick.
1. To select the Eye Dropper Tool, click on the icon on the toolbar or

Me & My Photoshop: Adobe Photoshop CS5 Basic Tutorial CEECEECOMPUTERS – http://www.ceeceecomputers.com Contact Us: [email protected] - +2347030445028 Page 13
2. Left-click on that particular spot of the colour you want i.e. the lipstick
area and you will notice a circle shape showing the colour of the lipstick,
immediately your foreground colour changes to the exact lipstick colour.
Then looking at the second picture by the right, I drew a rectangular
shape and it came out with that exact colour, also you can paint with the
colour.
f. The Healing Brush:
The healing brush tool is a tool that when selected, paints over your image
with another part of the image i.e. it lets you sample part of the
photograph/image and use it to paint over another part of the same image.
Once you have finished, Photoshop will examine the surrounding areas and try
to blend what you painted with the rest of the image.
It can also be used in correcting small blemishes that appears on scanned
pictures.
Me & My Photoshop: Adobe Photoshop CS5 Basic Tutorial CEECEECOMPUTERS – http://www.ceeceecomputers.com Contact Us: [email protected] - +2347030445028 Page 14

lines leaving the canvas a plane grass background.
1. To select the Healing Brush Tool, click on the icon on the toolbar or
by pressing on the letter “J”.
2. Then to use the tool, hold down the “ALT” key and left-click on the part

Me & My Photoshop: Adobe Photoshop CS5 Basic Tutorial CEECEECOMPUTERS – http://www.ceeceecomputers.com Contact Us: [email protected] - +2347030445028 Page 15
3. Then locate where you want to cover/heal, left-click and drag to paint all
over the part of the image. You will notice that the more you paint over
the previous image; keep painting over the image till you get satisfied
with the image.
SUB-TOOLS:
Spot Healing Brush: This tool automatically samples pixels to correct a spot
with one step without first combining the “ALT” Key. To manually set its
source of colour/image, you should make use of the healing brush itself.
While the Spot Healing Brush still selected, right-click on the image you are
working on to set/adjust its “Size, Hardness, Spacing, Angle and
Roundness”. This applies for both the Spot Healing Brush and the Healing
Brush itself.
Me & My Photoshop: Adobe Photoshop CS5 Basic Tutorial CEECEECOMPUTERS – http://www.ceeceecomputers.com Contact Us: [email protected] - +2347030445028 Page 16
Note: The more the brush size of the healing brush, the more its selection.
Patch Tool: This tool is used to replace part of an image with another
part of the same image by tracing a path around the part of the
image you want to replace, and then drag the path to other part of
the same image to be replaced with.
You will notice that as you move with the path created, it will be replaced
with other parts of the image, so when you get to suitable path – leave your
mouse and observe the changes (see images below).
I replaced the left eye with the lips.
Red Eye Tool:

panel tool features no anti-aliasing; everything is very bitmapped.
Colour Replacement Tool: This tool is specifically used in replacing
one colour (or range of colours) with another colour.

paste that spot you copied for cloning or drag it over, till the new part of
the image is covered with the source image.
4. Use the Option bar to adjust the Brush, Mode, Opacity, Flow, Table
pressure, Airbrush and Align Sample Check-box. Another way to choose
brush is by right-clicking on the image, a dialog box will appear, and

“Impressionist” will give you random dots of colour taken from the pattern, the
dot size is determined by the brush size.
i. The History Brush Tool:
This tool lets you paint back in time i.e. taking you back to previous versions of
your image.
For example; let’s say you added an effect on a photo and later you feel like
bringing it back to its original state. With History Brush Tool selected, paint
over the whole area of the photo and you will be surprised that your original
image will be restored back to its previous state.
1. To select the History Brush Tool, click on the icon on the toolbar or
by pressing on the letter “Y”.

Green Arrow: Foreground
Red Arrow: Background
“F” Letter: Default Foreground and Background Colours
“S” Letter: Switch Foreground and Background Colours
The difference between the “Gradient tool” and the “Paint bucket tool ” is
that the “Paint bucket tool” fills an area with a specific colour using the
foreground colour (see image below) while the “Gradient tool” fills the
selected area with a smooth blending of two (2) or more colours (see image
above) . Loading and creating preset will give you more than two colours).

SUB-TOOLS:
Me & My Photoshop: Adobe Photoshop CS5 Basic Tutorial CEECEECOMPUTERS – http://www.ceeceecomputers.com Contact Us: [email protected] - +2347030445028 Page 27
Sharpen Tool: This tool does not blur the selected area of your image rather it
sharpens the area.
Smudge Tool: This tool will smudge the area all around the canvas.
m. The Dodge Tool:
The main function of this tool is to add “Light” to images, thereby making the

Me & My Photoshop: Adobe Photoshop CS5 Basic Tutorial CEECEECOMPUTERS – http://www.ceeceecomputers.com Contact Us: [email protected] - +2347030445028 Page 28
This can only be done by changing the “highlight” at the Range field to
“Shadows” while others can remain the same.
Sponge Tool: The Sponge tool can saturate or desaturate colour in the area
you paint with.
Switch to sponge tool by pressing “Shift – O”.
n. The Pen Tool:
The Pen Tool is for drawing of vector graphics. It can also be used to create
smooth edged paths.

can easily change the background of your photograph.
1. To select the Pen Tool, click on the icon on the toolbar or by
pressing on the letter “P”.
Me & My Photoshop: Adobe Photoshop CS5 Basic Tutorial CEECEECOMPUTERS – http://www.ceeceecomputers.com Contact Us: [email protected] - +2347030445028 Page 29
2. Click and drag to draw a path, the path can be continuous depending on
the image you are selecting. Click and drag the anchor points to modify
the path.
Start off by creating a point on your canvas with the pen tool. Now
create a second point, but don’t let go.
Hold down and drag. You will notice that a curve will start to appear,
continue this till you finish your image.
If you are having trouble getting the pen tool to do what you want, one thing
can help is the gridlines. You can turn on the grid by going to the “View Menu”
and choosing “Grid” from the show submenu (See image below).
Me & My Photoshop: Adobe Photoshop CS5 Basic Tutorial CEECEECOMPUTERS – http://www.ceeceecomputers.com Contact Us: [email protected] - +2347030445028 Page 30
3. Still with the tool selected, right-click directly on the path drawn and a
drop down menu will appear, then left-click on “Make Selection” (see
image above).

radius or directly click on “OK” button to proceed (see image above).
Me & My Photoshop: Adobe Photoshop CS5 Basic Tutorial CEECEECOMPUTERS – http://www.ceeceecomputers.com Contact Us: [email protected] - +2347030445028 Page 31
5. Now the selected path of the image can now be moved with the aid of
the “Move tool”, Copied (Ctrl + C) and Pasted on another image/canvas
for editing by pressing “Ctrl + V” (see image above).
6. Looking at the last image above, I replaced the dog face with the
previous face selected.
SUB-TOOLS:
Free form Point Tool: This tool works just like the free form lasso tool.
Add Anchor Point Tool: The tool is used to add anchor points to the created
path.
Delete Anchor Point Tool: The tool is used to remove anchor points to the
created path.
Convert Point Tool:
o. The Horizontal Type Tool:
This tool, lets you type horizontally on a canvas/layer you are working on. New
Layer will be created for you to type on each time you click the type tool on a
new canvas.
You can also use the “Horizontal Type Tool” to create a sized text field like the

Me & My Photoshop: Adobe Photoshop CS5 Basic Tutorial CEECEECOMPUTERS – http://www.ceeceecomputers.com Contact Us: [email protected] - +2347030445028 Page 33
Vertical Type Tool: This tool is opposite to the “Horizontal Type Tool”
it lets you type on a canvas/image vertically (see image below).
Horizontal Type Mask Tool: Typing with this tool gives your text, the
colour of the Canvas/image background.
Assuming you positioned your text box (selecting Horizontal Type Mask
Tool) on top of a grassy canvas/image, after typing. A mask dash line will
round the text “GO” showing that the text is masked then go to the “Edit
menu” and copy (see image above).
Me & My Photoshop: Adobe Photoshop CS5 Basic Tutorial CEECEECOMPUTERS – http://www.ceeceecomputers.com Contact Us: [email protected] - +2347030445028 Page 34
After copying, go to the white colour canvas you’re working on and paste it.
You will notice that the text will bear the background of your previous
grassy canvas/image (see image above).
Vertical Type Mask Tool: This tool works just as the “Horizontal Type
Mask Tool” except that it types vertically and not horizontally.
p. The Path Selection Tool:
This tool helps you move any created path around it is just the same to “Move”
tool except that the “Path Selection” tool is specifically meant for moving
created paths.
For example: create a path with the “Pen tool” and try to move it with
the “Move” tool, you will notice that it is not possible to move the path with a
“move tool”.
Me & My Photoshop: Adobe Photoshop CS5 Basic Tutorial CEECEECOMPUTERS – http://www.ceeceecomputers.com Contact Us: [email protected] - +2347030445028 Page 35
But when you select the “path” tool and click it directly on the path shape, you
will also notice that the path formally without anchor points will now have
them thereby making it possible to move them around the canvas.
SUB – TOOLS:
